If one should love to go see Miss Hattie's old mansion house, then it is at 2203 Harvard Blvd just South of the 10 freeway and East of Arlington Avenue...

Hattie famously said. "I'd rather make $750.00 a week playing a maid rather than being a maid making $75.00 a week. In the 1930s $750.00 a week was a fortune. She could easily afford a mansion.

@@emiliomazariegoswilliams743 I heard about a black family who purchased a beach front home in California in 1920 for $1,200 and later had the house taken from them and only given a small amount of money for it. But $1,200 in 1920 was only about $15k in today's money. So imagine buying a BEACH FRONT HOUSE in southern California for only $15k today. Or for that matter buying a livable house ANYWHERE in this country for that amount of money. It would never happen.

@@wrestlerx8494 , yes and thanks for responding because I had already heard about that family (the Bruce) and just last week the governor of California signed a proclamation giving back their land(valued at about $75 million) on Huntington Beach (an upscale suburb near Los Angeles) and orally issuing a public apology to them; it's never too late to seek justice !!

@@emiliomazariegoswilliams743 you will not get a livable house anywhere that I know of for only $15k, but that was basically all they paid for that beach front house in 1920. I don't even know how because it's so expensive to live in that area.

The moral of the story is.....her character was deeply loved by the the O'Hara family in the movie & she was adored in life by many. The O'Hara family was Irish & English. An unlikely match up as the English enslaved the Irish before Africans. Most Irish treated their servants and if they were technically 'slaves' well as they knew the suffrage. Many hired or 'bought' them to keep them from harm. It is how patriots worked around the greedy English elites. Aka underground railroad...Many loved them like family. If you're are on 1,000 acres the families depend on each other, deliver each others babies, doctor each other.

Hattie McDaniel was like a Narrator in GWTW. She had more screen time than Rhett Butler, Melanie, and Ashley Wilkes. That is a milestone for 1939. I admire her as an actress Very Much. She is a Hero. Her Mammy character is BELOVED.
@saran32146 жыл бұрын
Charles Neely...you need to read up on how she was treated in Hollywood before you start in on the south. Which you obviously hate. She could not even get buried where she wanted to there. GWTW was written by a southerner, who wrote the mammy character with great respect. The book begins with mammy and ends with her. Along with other good black characters. Sam. Who saves Scarlett. Pork...who she gives her father's watch to. Maybe you should actually read the book. And sweep off your own front porch first.

Here in 2018 the Hattie McDaniel house is not dilapidated. I go by there at least once a month. The house across the street with the columns is the Beckett Mansion and was built in either 1905 or 1910 for Dr. Wesley Beckett, a chairman of the trustees of the Los Angeles County Medical Association and member of the board of trustees at USC. It was purchased two years ago and is going through an extensive renovation as we speak.

Vwjl1207, thank you very much for identifying the "Beckett Mansion". I was in the Sugar Hill area some years ago when Nelson Mandela came to Los Angeles. I participated with the Choir of FAME Church to providing music for Mr. Mandela's visit. Looking around the neighborhood, I was taken aback by the beautiful old homes in the area. I noticed that the Beckett Mansion was in very poor condition at that time. One of the members of Fame said she had heard the old mansion was going to be torn down. I thought that was really a shame. Los Angeles has a lot of beautiful property that should be preserved. I don't know who bought the place but I am glad they are fixing it up. Its really a nice house. I have not been in the area in a while, but I may drive through soon just to see what improvements have been made!

"Sugar Hill" Like many of the African-Americans in the entertainment industry, Hattie made her home in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. In previous times, the district had been home to doctors, lawyers, and railroad barons. In the Depression era, the area had fallen into hard times, with many residents needing to either sell their homes or rent out rooms in them. By the 1940s, the African-American entertainment community began purchasing homes in the district, nicknaming it ‘Sugar Hill’. Some property owners reacted to their new neighbors by adding restrictive covenants to their deeds. The covenants either prohibited African-Americans from purchasing a property or inhabiting inside once purchased. The practice was declared illegal by the US Supreme Court in 1948.

Fortunately, they found 12 lots in a line in Los Feliz-Silverlake on a cliff side which lent itself even better to his idea of a family compound and no covenants were attached.

It was a dream come true to make it in Hollywood, even playing roles of subservient maids, butlers....and slaves! Whatever image they created, it could not....and would not be comparable to White Hollywood. For Hattie McDaniel, owning a house like this was her wildest dream come true. It was not just to impress others....but to make herself happy glad; coming from such humble beginnings and working as hard as she did to achieve what only whites were allowed to do. Hattie McDaniel was a very talented actress and it's hard to imagine what she and other black actors had to endure throughout their careers. She was a very dignified, classy person as well - someone to be admired - and she'll never be forgotten.
@waldolydecker81185 ай бұрын
you don't have to "imagine" it; its well documented in many books, including autobiographies by many of those who lived thru it in Hollywood first hand.

I agree Latoya.Why couldn't he just pause at her house and get out a little maybe.Not quite sure which house is hers. But the neighborhood is beautiful.

@@fivepoints That voice she used on Hattie McDaniel's television show was a little strange. Gee, I hope that wasn't her real voice. Maybe it was just the character she was playing.

Hattie home just abandoned , that's so sad . Foolishness to me , The family should have memorial there for sight seeing people could pay for the taxes and up keep . But , there's something in her will that stated her home wasn't to be sold an trust fund was set up to pay taxes at least . But you never know truth so we speculate . She was a wonderful person and great actress ! She is missed by many people . Rip Hattie

I google earth the address, what he was showing was the side, the front was almost across from the Antebellum home he kept talking about, it looked pretty good on google and I could see the hints of Asian style still on the house

Needs to be restored for everybody to see Hattie McDaniel was a trailblazer and did groundbreaking rolls someone asked her once does it bother her playing a maid she said no because I'm getting paid more playing a maid in the movies then I am if I actually worked as one. She needs to be remembered...

Island Mississippi girl now 50 years in California but I headed man me once myself and I just remember loving her and she looked about the same my mom was pretty skinny so I'll remember the baby I like it put my had on her shop for breast LOL but what I remember is her spirituality and her commanding personality when she disciplined us and I just adored and loved her she was with me more than my own mother was I will always remember her and love and adoration and when I saw Gone With the Wind I thought oh there is my Manny. There's nothing to be offended about boats this was a loving dynamic in the south and unfortunately I do now understand the controversy but I just remembered in my heart it impacted me in a positive way but I do appreciate the evolving nature of what needs to be done and I truly agree with this. But I just remember a loving impact and respect for people that I loved that's how far it went when I was a child

Hattie only lived here from 1941-1947 or 48. She had moved to 3341 Country Club Dr in the late 40's until her death in 1952.Another interesting fact is that she resided at 2177 W 31 Street at the time she won her Oscar.

In L.A., ALMOST everybody doesn't give a good goddamn about their local history, nothing's preserved, these places are always torn down, never any historical plaques placed at important locations.... It makes me nauseous how these local politicians don't preserve anything for posterity...... In TWENTY YEARS all these short sighted pricks shall be fined and committed FOR DESTRUCTION OF HISTORY!!!!!!!!!
