During the Second World War, there were many horrendous war crimes that were carried out by all different armies involved in the conflict. Famously the Nazis carried out some horrendous acts, for example the Einsatzgruppen would follow the Wehrmacht and take the lives of civilians, and it is estimated that they killed around 2 million people. However the SS were responsible for much of the war crimes committed by the Germans, and there was one SS commander who met an incredibly brutal end at the hands of the French Resistance.
Helmuth Kampfe joined the SS and quickly rose throughout its ranks to become an incredibly powerful commander. He saw action on the Eastern Front and was drafted across to France as the Germans prepared for the imminent invasion of Normandy by the Allies. (D-Day) However he was tasked with defeating elements of the French Resistance known as the Maquis in the southern forests. However Kampfe was captured by them and was the highest ranking SS officer captured during World War 2. He was quickly executed by the French Resistance, however was killed in barbaric fashion as he was burned alive inside an ambulance with many other German soldiers.
Following Kampfe's execution, the Nazis and SS carried out a horrific massacre of a nearby village, Oradour-sur-Glane in which almost 700 people were killed in horrific fashion. This was for reprisals for Kampfe's death.

Please see my other posts.. This video presents as 'fact' a version of events that was to be offered as Diekmann's defence at his court martial. There IS still some mystery about exactly where and when Kampfe was killed but it emphaically wasn't in front of a baying crowd of villagers as his body was burnt. This video has some useful and accurate info in it, but unfortunately the entire premise is, frankly, nonsense. A much more accurate and informative account could be found if you searched "In a Ruined State: Chapter 7: An Explanation for the Massacre" I wish the author would take it down or at least explain ths version is NOT corroborated by any witness testimony or any other evidence (from either the German or French present that horrible day ).

As far as I can remember, the officer in command of the battalion that destroyed the town and it’s inhabitants exceeded even the standards of cruelty in the SS. He was formally brought up in charges by the SS and was due to be courtmartialed…but managed to find death in the battles that Das Reich had with invading allied forces in Normandy. I do not believe that his body was ever recovered. His relationship with Kampfe had been very close, the two having fought and survived countless horrific battles against incredible odds on the eastern front together. Diekmann took Kampfe’s death very badly. The destruction of Orador sur Glane, while unacceptable to the SS in the western front, would have been easily overlooked in Russia, where the fighting between the Germans and the Russians was completely devoid of any mercy or humanity. Hence, having been a hard veteran of the experiences of the eastern front, Diekmann would have seen his solution to the death of his friend as, “acceptable” by the standards to which he had grown accustomed to. Allied soldiers in northern France left accounts of the surprising savagery of the close fighting that they experienced with German SS units that had cadres that had spent years fighting against Soviet forces in that theater of war. While I am not condoning Diekmann for his conduct, I wanted to draw attention to how the conditions of war alongside the kind of society that war and militant organizations breed can turn a human being into something less than what we have the capacity to be.

The cruelty of the SS in France is likely why the US would hand surrendering SS and some Wehrmacht troops over to the wonderful and hard fighting Soviets. Russia knew how to treat a German by keeping them as slave labor until 1955 to rebuild Russia

You may have found it to be 'another excellent video'...however, the entire premise (and title) is almost certainly simply untrue. There's no evidence whatsoever to confirm the idea that Kampfe was murdered and burnt in public. It seems this version of the story was to be used as the defence case at Diekmann's court martial. There's no corroboration from either the SS soldiers present or any French sources that I'm aware of. Perhaps one interpretation would be that Diekmann had been told that his friend had been executed ( by Milice) or other informers...we'll probably never know, but ( I think) it's virtually certain that Kampfe was executed in woodland near Breuilaufa, quite likely, as a resistance reprisal to the massacre of Oradour! Accuracy matters.

These are the kind of things you won't learn about in history class. Here in the US, the school system is too busy re-writing history instead of teaching it. We must all learn from the atrocities of the past and keep the history alive and so that it is never forgotten and hopefully never repeated. Thank you for this very informative video.

You can learn form history class. Listen to what they are telling you, and then fully do more reseach yourself. Try to get as close as you can to the facts yourself. You may find some of these discoveries unpleasant, especially if the "good guys" have not acted well. The important thing you have learn from history class is that something did happen. Remember that there is a social bias in each country, and that the school system is caught up in this. When discussing your findings, always be diplomatic and understand that others may be bias and refuse to agree with you. That is OK, and no worth sacrificing respect or a friendship over a disagreement.

This is the first time I have heard of this account.As I know it the reprisal against this village was due to the constant attacks by the French resistance against the SS panzer division Das Reich.It was held up for two weeks in total as it moved up through France to take part in the fighting after D Day.

Das Reich was NOT held up for two weeks by partisans, total rubbish. On June 8 they departed Montauban to the area Tulle Brive Limoges to put down a partisan uprising. This they did by 11 June. 12 June they did vehicle maintenance and departed for Normandy on June 13

Das Reich was delayed in getting to the invasion beaches in Normandy. If they chose to do repairs so much the better. They were too late to push the allies out of France. The only military event Das Reich is remembered for is mass murder of defenceless civilians. They had little effect on the allied invasion. They were destroyed by naval gunfire of which they had no defence. Fighter bombers finished the rest off

To be brutally honest...the Resistance DID know something would happen...it was great for THEIR propaganda...as stated before..they knew what the Germans were like...Das Reich was actually in negotiations with Resistance leaders about a prisoner swap/release..but as stated these Marquis were communist. Also please do not forget..many of these Resistance groups had different motives and often fought against each other..as they did in other occupied territories such as Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia. Please read for reference Max Hastings book DAS REICH as it is a very involving and sad read and shows not all is as crystal clear as history is often portrayed

Yes it was an interesting piece of information BUT I somehow get the vibe from some of the comments that this would justify the massacre. It certainly doesn't. Communists who have infiltrated the Resistance murder an SS- general _near_ Oradour-sur-Glane, and in reprisal the SS massacre everyone living in the whole village, including children. Not any more justified than before, because they punished the wrong people and out of proportion.

Agreed - although it's worth adding that the Tulle atrocity was apparently fuelled by the Germans discovering 40 of their own men who'd surrendered being found massacred and mutilated by resistants the previous day (with their testicles cut off and stuffed in their mouthes). A horrific tit-for-tat ensued between the Germans and the resistants, and tragically it was the innocent French civillians in Tulle, Oradour-sur-Glane and innumerable other villages and towns in France who payed the price. For the addition to the record also: Kampfe was probably not held in or about Oradour-sur-Glanes (the site of the terrible massacre of nearly 700 French people) as stated here, but in or near the village of Oradour-sur-Vayres which was some distance away. So the SS didn't even get the 'right' (not the right word I know) village to take vengeance upon. On such twists of fate do such horrors happen.

The Maquis was never announced a fighting Force at the Red Cross at Geneva (like i.e. the "Volkssturm" was). So they were treated like "armed Civilists". That means in an occupied (and surrendered Territory since 1940): Kill at sight. All according to Hague Convention.

@@davidcole2685 if I recall correctly the brits succeeded because the insurgents were a different ethnic group (Chinese, around 3% of the population) than the majority of Ethnic Malays. Even though the Malays wanted independence from Britain, the chaos and instability of the war gradually turned them against the insurgents. It wasn’t so much the Brits winning, as it was the Insurgents screwing it up and alienating their support base.

@Philip Carpenter the “men” that murdered this SS man..along with several other German soldiers were prisoners of war..simples..look and read up the facts. You yourself would even agree that law needs to be shown in order that you show yourself to be the greater good! Even for an SS soldier. These “men” soon shot off into the hills and left the town of Oradour to its fate...one did not see them coming back to fight the SS Battalion (even in the morning as they shot 2 unarmed men in a nearby area...so the warning(s) were already out weren’t they?) BEFORE the SS Bn moved into Oradour. You say that like the Nazis wouldnt have killed people if they met no resistance. The group that were running kill squads against civilians on the Eastern front as a SOP and were also using concentration camps to kill 11 million people mostly Jews, but also people they didnt like like people on the left, people with downs, gay people etc etc. The NAZIS killed thousands of innocent people, not the French resistance.
