However the SS were responsible for much of the war crimes committed by the Germans, and there was one SS commander who met an incredibly brutal end at the hands of the French Resistance.
Helmuth Kampfe joined the SS and quickly rose throughout its ranks to become an incredibly powerful commander. He saw action on the Eastern Front and was drafted across to France as the Germans prepared for the imminent invasion of Normandy by the Allies. (D-Day) However he was tasked with defeating elements of the French Resistance known as the Maquis in the southern forests. However Kampfe was captured by them and was the highest ranking SS officer captured during World War 2. He was quickly executed by the French Resistance, however was killed in barbaric fashion as he was burned alive inside an ambulance with many other German soldiers.
