I love shit like this. Spooky or genuinely unsettling things hidden in otherwise perfectly non-horror E- and T-rated games. Nintendo seems to be the biggest source of this (Hell Valley Sky Trees in Galaxy 2 and the ghost in Mario 3D land, lavender town in the gameboy Pokemon games and the ghost girls in the DS pokemon games, the dark undertones in Majora's Mask, the spirit temple in OOT etc. etc. etc) and it makes me wonder if they snuck stuff like this in their newer games and we just haven't found them yet. I'm tempted to go back to Mario Odyssey and see if they hid any ghosts.

Interestingly, the file for Shiverburn Galaxy is called “Beyond Hell Valley”, referencing Hell Valley in Japan, a hot spring area surrounded by snow. However, what I thought was that Fire worlds and Ice worlds both can represent Hell. The valley also appears as the background of Shiverburn, hence Hell Valley. Edit: Thanks for 200+ likes! What I really like about the hell valley sky trees as a whole is that it’s almost like...at least in my opinion...they are the creators of this world. Really think about it: 1. The entire UNIVERSE you are travelling is filled to the brim with life, enemies, even regular trees in some galaxies. Lava is not common in most but it is indeed there... 2. Why is this galaxy the ONLY galaxy in the entire game that has absolutely no semblance of a world around you? No clouds, just a massive crater of lava below. I like to think that the canon reason they are there is that these beings saw what Bowser was doing, but because he is but a speck compared to them, they decided to play along and created the ominous galaxy you travel specifically right here, as there was nothing but a massive drop to lava prior. Mario is the one playing catch-up so as this world was created in a sort of haste, the giants are curious as to what Mario is, and why he travels this new world. They are awe struck at how such a small creature can move and cannot take their eyes away. Only one of the four giants shies away from Mario hoping not to be seen, while his three brothers do not fear him.

@@alpine190mc How can you say that the two dots are eyes, even? They don't glow a particular color. They're actual holes if you look at the close up and see the background scrolling through. These are most certainly a particularity on these trees. The artist who rendered them, probably hoped to trick the players through clever pareidolia, as they mistake what is a strange looking tree for a ghost figure. I gotta remind you that Mario is a fantasy franchise with bizarre artistic freedoms when it comes to design landscape features: huge mushroom platforms, clouds smiling at you or hills with literal eyes. I hardly question the fact that there are trees this outlandish looking, if they're called so in the actual code. For all I know, the level designer wanted them on a more creepy stage, but was only allowed to place them there, at a not so ideal location, which makes them stand out even more... I know my theory is not the most glamorous and all but then again, most of the time, reality is far from the overwrought fantasies of the fans.

Based on Mario's canon height (5' 1" taken from an official life sized statue) and judging by the approximation of "100 times bigger" as stated in the video, that would put the largest of the Hell Valley Sky Trees at approximately 508 feet tall. For reference, that's over 200 feet taller than The Statue of Liberty and just 47 feet shorter than the Washington Monument. The shortest (30 times bigger than Mario) would be around 152 feet tall.

Coincidentally, I found these just after reading the Ben Drowned creepypasta, which scared me senseless at the time. I remember my friends and I crafting theories on these things for hours. Weird and unlikely related to Shiverburn specifically, but California folklore tells of the Shadow Watchers, shadowy beings that, always on the horizon, observe people travelling in the Santa Lucia Mountains. They always hide beyond the ridges, doing nothing but watching, and its impossible to approach them, as they will vanish at distance. Needless to say, the Sky Trees always gave me those sort of vibes.

The fact that this is a ridiculously huge canyon filled with lava makes it seem like "Hell Valley" could be an in-universe name for the canyon itself. Some kind of ancient Canyon so large and so full of Lava that all across the cosmos it is referred to as "Hell Valley." The Sky would literally be "Beyond Hell Valley." Due to being a Skybox that shows the edge of Hell Valley itself, with figures standing at its edge. Perhaps since the time of Hell Valley's last eruption a civilization has placed themselves there.

They arent that big, thats just a simple misunderstanding of art and tech. A skybox is a sphere, generally with no depth (skybox elements aren't usually in front of or behind the sphere, just flatly painted on). The illusion of depth comes from the textures used and various parallax effects. In other words, you can't just walk up to a painting of a forest, pull out a ruler, and say "this is a painting of 10 inch trees". Theres a difference between how big the brush strokes literally are, and how big the trees are supposed to seem. The only meaningful direct measurement we can make on a sky box is how many degrees of the sphere an image takes up. Pixels, meters, and other measurements are irrelevant. In order to learn the real size of the spooky tree dudes (ignoring artistic license taken to make them visible), you would have to gauge their intended distance, and extrapolate how large something would have to be to consume that many degrees of vision given said distance.

Considering that the texture for the "Hell Valley Sky Trees" might have been done in a rush and also considering that the line of pixels at the top appears to be heavily filtered and smoothed out, it looks like the texture as a whole was rescaled and filtered to be bigger than it was originally. Could have been so that they were actually visible from a distance; not that the things are meant to be huge. And I don't think someone in a rush would consider scale 100% correctly. Also, one small thought that could kinda ruin it all... Maybe it was just a developer joke. Who really knows what happened.

I am planning out a paper Mario fangame, sort of like a conclusion to the Mario series, of course not an end to it, but the thing everything has been leading up to. I planned for Mario to meet the hell valley sky trees in person and find out that they are demons who work for Jaydes, Queen of the underworld, and they hunt down people who are causing problems in the underworld. When you see them in Mario Galaxy, they are hunting down Mario because he is causing too many Goombas and koopas to die, but in super paper Mario, which happens soon after Mario Galaxy in my timeline, Dimentio literally destroys the underworld, and when Mario sends Dimentio's soul to the underworld, Jaydes forgives him. However, The mind controlling floro-sapien seeds that Dimentio planted in Luigi's head were never fully removed. Dimentio's soul reactivated the seeds and used Luigi's accessibility to E. Gadd's lab to his advantage, and found a special "experiment" that brought him back to life. Dimentio decided to begin his master plan, and remarried Peach and Bowser to recreate the chaos heart. When Jaydes found out that Dimentio had escaped back into the soul of the living, she sent the hell valley sky trees out to get him back. Of course, I may need to give the sky trees some sort of size changing ability, or the ability to transform into shadows now that you found out their size.

This isn't the only time nintendo pulled a spooky prank on us! In the original splatoon (and the second boss of splatoon2 only) screams can be heard in every boss room and coming from some statues in ink blot art academy at the night. Knowing that the screams are only there because one developer thought it would be funny, and that the hellvalley trees were done sloppily and seemingly in a rush, I think it's safe to assume that they exist for the same reason as the splatoon bossroom screams.

they are probably alot smaller, because the skybox is so big, that if they had their normal size they would be invisible because they are so far away. they might be just twice as big as mario

And I think these things are my favorite gaming urban legend/creepypasta right now- it’s not trying too hard to be edgy or scary, it’s just a strange, mysterious thing that nobody knows what it is, and people can come up with all kinds of theories about what they think it is.

You know what the Hell Valley Sky Trees remind me of? The Kunekune japanese urban legend. Noodle-limbed creature that appears way in the distance that also drives people insane? Check. (Though if I have to be honest, the unused boss from Luigi's Mansion resembles it more.)

they are normal size, just far away. they move with you because they are watching they only appear big because that's how the rendering works.

Just looked em up. 99% certain that's where they come from. White, 2 empty holes for eyes, very curvy, very round humanoid bodies. The only problem would br their size, but I'd giess the only reason they were drawn so big was simply because of disrance and visual effects from the skybox. Great call man

Considering the game files call them trees and 'kodama' can also apparently refer to the tree in which one of the spirits resides, I'd say you nailed it. I've heard of this mystery for years and never heard that explanation. That's pretty strange considering that these spirits are apparently featured in the quite popular Princess Mononoke. (I got all my info from a 30 second Google search so forgive me if I'm off the mark.)
