I like the term potato cut regardless of shape haha. We use potato as a joke to say something is bad or junk all the time 😅.

Just started faceting a few months ago and I can't stand to see unaligned facets in my stones and to see how some commercial cut stones look makes me feel a lot better about my work

This is great info, I have some very cheap faceted stones and I've of course noticed the asymmetrical facets and such, but "windowing" is something new for me to pay attention to. Luckily I just buy them as examples of the material so I'm not worried about the quality of the cut, but this is still quite interesting information.

Really interesting information, makes me thankful i only make cabochons, because itd drive me nuts to have uneven angles in my stones lol. Great video, thanks for sharing!

This video was super informative and interesting, however I am now terrified to look at my wedding ring up close 😂. Thanks for such an educational video, yet again!

I spoke in sweeping generalities, but there are absolutely nice commercial cut stones as well. Best of luck if you put yours under the loupe!

Great video and very informative! Faceted stones that are cut with the right depth and angles for the refractive index of the material are truly worth the effort!

Some gem stones can be purchased on Aliexpress for a couple of dollars. This includes the rough, cutting, middle people and shipping. I wonder how much the cutter is paid in this business model.

From what I've seen, so many of these stones are cut and polished in foreign countries for cheap. Sold for a premium, and so many of those lapidary professionals freehand their facets.
