I'm so mad at how they treat Aphrodite still! The scene where she is comforting Damien is showing she has great emotional intelligence. Damien is grieving and probably in shock, and offering to take care of his pets isn't a threat, it's pure concern seeing how she phrased it. If he felt like he couldn't take care of the animals, he might've not wanted to bring it up himself, since it would seem disrespectful towards Jack in his grieving mind. So Aphrodite is so considerate, giving him the opportunity to hand them over for a while if he felt like it, without being intrusive. She's the nicest person in the series, and I can't understand what the author(s) were thinking having the supposed good guys neg her all the time!

At this point im convinced Aphrodite is a stand in for a real life person the Cast duo know but her personality -either by incompetence or unconscious acknowledgement of her irl inspiration not being that bad - ended up becoming the only one of the main group who is bearable or reasonable. I earnestly believe that if this books were written from Aphrodite's POV and overseen by an editor who cuts through the Casts bullshit, they would've been actually decent.

@ninavale.10 ай бұрын
honestly, Aphrodite should just drop Zoey's ungrateful ass at this point, because Zoey is just mean and it's uncalled for. Aphrodite, as far as I can remember from this mess, was the only one who decided to actually DO SOMETHING in crisis and try and bring Zoey back, to defeat the bad guys instead of oh-my-mying and wallowing in depair and angst like everyone else. On the side note, I NEVER understood the appeal of a protagonist like Zoey, someone who is just so entitled and self-absorbed and vapid and all that. and I'm not saying you can't focus on a character who is a bitch or who is entitled and all of that, obv you can but the narrative should ADMIT IT. It should make it clear the protagonist is like this and maybe not the best person. Because what I hate about this portrayal is that the authors are insisting that the protagonist ISN'T the mean person or in the wrong. On the contrary, they try to gaslight us into beliving the protag-kun/chan is perfect and in the right. and that INFURIATES ME. Because, again, they are NOT perfect they clearly ARE flawed but the narrative won't ever admit it.

Not to mention, even in the first book when Aphrodite was the "mean girl" she was quick to immediately help Zoey when it was serious, and also went to her with her vision because she knew Zoey has the power to do something. She was a "mean girl" for maybe half the book and then dropped all that the second things because serious and not highschool popularity fighting. Then continued to do so for the rest of the books, taking up more responsibilities until she is literally THE backbone for everyone. Aphrodite is written as if she was suppose to be the main character, and HER personality and actions are more aligned with the traits that everyone said Zoey has.

I feel like Neferet could be a really sypathetic character. Now, we know two things: - Beginning at the age of 10 and continuing for 5-7 years, she was sexually abused by her human father - Nyx marks her and chooses for her to become a vampyre, therefore saving her from her father *If Neferet had a basis in religion (which is patriarchal) before Nyx marked her, she could have felt like God turned his back on her and allowed her father hurt her. *She could have struggled with religion, so hearing that Nyx is a real goddess and is there to save her could have given her renewed hope and devotion. *Except this time, she realized that, if Nyx was God all along, it was HER responsibility to save her, and that Nyx turned HER back on the intense sexual abuse instead. *She could have internalized this until it festered into a hatred of Nyx (who she disobeys by choosing evil), humans (her father was part of Human society, and no other humans presumably saw or saved her from the abuse), and men (who she strings along, manipulates, and potentially abuses-- why? so they can't and won't hurt her. they are whom she constantly maintains power over so that they can't even have a CHANCE at hurting her. This could also be why she chose so much power in becoming a Tsi Tsigili (?). because power makes her feel safe. it enstills that she can never be hurt or abused again.) *This isn't even to mention the fact that she could have been sexually abused as a fledgling before becoming Nyx's high priestess. We know the school employs nonces, and we know that evil could have slithered into other men besides Stark. And we know men dont go on holiday from abusing women, even while fledglings!! What if she continued to be sexually abused by a teacher or classmate(s)? Or what if she went into the human world and was assaulted? Like what nearly happened with Zoe? *Then she'd lose faith in Nyx and turn her back on Nyx to gain more power- so men could stop hurting her and she could feel safe. TL:DR, Neferet had the potential to be a sympathetic character, driven by fear, insecurity, and the brokenness she was left with after years, potentially decades, of living under sexual abuse from humans/men. She had so much potential to be a dynamic and interesting character. She could've been shown her wrongs and the horrible past her actions now stem from, why a hatred of humans is wrong/preventing her from many things- like finding peace and comradere in humans, who are not so different from vampyres- and been redeemed as someone more than her trauma. But no. She's just an evil woman making good men evil by her proximity because she's such a nasty manipulative slut for the fun of it. Okay, Cast duo.

Sgiach is Scottish Gàidhlig for “skin”. What a beautiful name. Oh and Seoras is George. Remarkably less fantasy sounding.

I put these on while I work on my own novel in the background. All the while repeating to myself that if they can do it, I can do it. Thank you so much for all of your hard work on these absolute treasures.

Wow Stark is such a nothing character that I forget he exists until he does something, every single time

The last two reviews on this book I was like “this was the last one I read, I couldn’t take anymore” but now I actually think I can say with confidence THIS is the last one I read, and couldn’t finish it. Stay tuned to see if this was or was not indeed the last one 🤣 I think it was all like a fever dream and I blacked it out

Thank you so much for reading these? I remember finding these in the library when I was in my early teens, and I'd completely managed to forget about them till your review. 10/10 I'm looking forward to you tearing this one apart too haha

Jack dying to the glee cast version of defying gravity feels like a fever dream. I read the series at 12 and at that point I finally realised it was not good

I'm late but what else is new? Love your videos 😘 And to answer your question : Kramisha* is an awful stereotype of a black woman just as Jack is an awful stereotype of a homosexual man. Stereotypes exists for a reason so versions of Jack and Kramisha definitely exist; however, you'll probably have to look REALLY hard to find one. Therefore, yes it's offensive bcuz the Casts paints w/ a broad brush (remember Damien was written similarly and let's not forget Shaunee and other POCs in this book who aren't Zoey) and fails to flesh out their characters beyond a cardboard cutout of demographics outside of heterosexual, white females 😒

This might be fucked up but Jacks death shouldn’t have been via claymore but have him tangle up in the wires holding the paper swords so he bleeds out as an ironic twist of his singing of “defying gravity” and a small way to show that Nerferet isn’t truly in control on Darkness then have Nyx come in to spare him the pain or reassure him as he dies to show that she cannot physically interfere but actively cares about her “children”

I lost the plot on the video about the 2nd book but it truly isn't important enough to try and make sense of anything
