I feel like people associate 30s with being old because when most of our parents where that age, they already had children and looked like mums and dads. Many 30 year olds nowadays live life like people in their 20s did years ago and I also feel like not having children early on or at all often contributes to looking younger.

This is true. I didn’t have a child until my mid 30s, for years everyone assumed I was in my 20’s and now my daughter is a teenager I’m rapidly aging. I mean I need Botox in my forehead now to combat wrinkles from my eyebrows shooting up everytime she tells me it’s not fair 😂

One thing you didn't mention (and I dont blame you for not) is that women go through massive hormonal changes when having kids. I remember after giving birth how mature my skin looked while my hormones were leveling back out from being pregnant. Almost 15 years after and I'm now noticing some of those lines and wrinkles again now. Hormones definitely play a big role in appearance as well as many other factors. 😂

So much changed for me when I went through menopause. I was actually going through perimenopause for years and didn't know it. One thing I noticed was that my skin and hair became drier. When you get to a certain age you start getting told what you should and should not do. From hair styles, make up and the clothes you wear. I decided I was going to do what I want because it makes me happy. If someone else doesn't like it that's fine but I'm not going to change what I like unless it's for myself.

Oh wow, hormones make a HUGE difference in a woman’s skin and hair! After my youngest was born my hair turned curly! I’d had curly hair when I was a baby, but it went full ringlets after his birth…until I stopped nursing him, then it went back to straight. 🤷🏻‍♀️And now with perimenopause my skin looks very saggy and my hair looks kind of brittle even though it’s healthy. It’s wild what a difference hormones make.

I love experimenting with different hair colour and make up styles (right now I'm going through a 1920s flapper phase and trying to recreate the look with recreated versions of vintage products). I hate this idea of 'You can't do/wear that, it'll make you older" type nonsense. I'm in my early 50's ffs, what's wrong with me looking my age, but still being creative and having fun. Newsflash, I don't do my hair and makeup for anyone else but myself. That's the beauty of growing older, you can stop caring what people think or what media tries to dictate to you.

It makes sense, working class women usually don't have the extra money to get facials/botox and whatnot, they age naturally. I think articles should remind people how skin ages *normally*, without alterations or treatments & stuff. Especially in our current economy, less and less people have access to this luxury, and it shouldn't be prioritized over living comfortably, imo 🥲 We focus so much on how we look that we forget to actually live istg

A lot of the time fear of aging isn't really about a fear of age as in numbers, but a fear of the loss of being attractive. Since aging is so stigmatized a lot of the time people won't answer truthfully when asked directly how old someone is anyway. No one wants to accidentally tell someone they look old so the safest thing would be to overshoot on the younger side. A lot of this is beyond anyone's control with how much of it is based on class, genetics, overall facial appearance, and a better approach to ageism would be one where it just didn't matter how old you look

Considering the fact that your nose grows and changes throughout your entire life (as do your ears), there are a ton of facial features that can, by accident, look old. That said, who cares what the Internet says about how old you look, right? It's water off a duck's back, that person does not KNOW you.

@@beckstheimpatient4135 I think it starts to become a sore issue when the ones asking were anticipating a favourable answer. I did drink a lot, like alcoholic a lot, but somehow that didn't fry my skin. So it's part good genes from both parents and part better habits.

Your point about how simply being dehydrated can have such an impact on skin texture is so important!!! I have chronic medical issues that lead to a constant battle with hydration, and my skin is like night and day if I've had proper fluid and electrolyte intake. It can be a week-long battle of drinking electrolyte drinks to get my skin to bounce back, and no amount or type of moisturizer will change it 😩 ETA: My point being that even though my situation is a bit exaggerated, Robert is 1000% correct that if you want hydrated skin, you really need to start by hydrating your body! Bonus tip - if you find that drinking plain water ends up making you more thirsty, you may do well to add a bit of electrolyte mix (hyponatremia often makes you feel more thirsty!)

I'm elder Gen Z so I don't know if I count but I would think of 30's as life *just starting* like no one in their 20's is on the same page. Some are graduating college, some have been scraping by, some are married and popping out kids, some are traveling the world, it's **tumultuous** . I don't even wanna hear from someone 20 and under they're still kids, and I don't mean that in a negative sense, it's just you don't have a good concept of time and of people when you've only lived a little over a decade of it. And all those different lifestyles and levels of stress I've mentioned also plays a huge part in how "old" one looks.

I also feel nationality, your style, the way you talk, how and where people meet you plays a huge role as well. People from East asian countries (Japan korea) tend to look young from a Western perspective. A lot of Arab and south asian women tend to look old for their age in their teens and young for their age in their mid 30s. This also seem to extend to a lot of black women as well. Your height, weight, and hairstyle also tend to play a role in how old or young people clock you. Where they meet you also plays a role. You might clock older if they meet you in a church. You might clock younger if met in a trendy cafe. People from certain countries think I am older than my age, while others think I am younger. I am talking about a solid 5 ish years plus or minus. TL, DR: So don't let this bother you. There are a lot of factors beyond skin.

Can confirm😉. I travelled all around the world with "the french brand" between my 32-35 as a MUA so no stress, lovely conditions, gorgeus hotels,etc... I was perfectly able to take good care of myself exactly like I did at home. I always weared my extream long hair in a super low ballerina bun, full black masculine suit and the same signature make up look dictated by the brand: natural eyes, natural everything, red lip. I' m cauca mediterranean, pale olive, military green eyes, chestnut hair. Absolutely nobody guessed my correct age anywhere🤷🏻‍♀️. I was 40+ in Moscow, early 20’ s in Dubai and "Oh, nonono, I can' t guess🤭" in C-J-K. USA and France almost nailed it but then they saw me in my free day with long hair, babydoll dress and zero make up and their changed their mind. The funniest thing is that everybody, no matter the country, pointed my resemblance with Lady Gaga😆😂🤣. Happiest and most enriching years of my life. I'm 40 years old. I come from a line of women that have consistently looked younger than their age. We've been blessed in that department. I don't feel like I "look" 40, but what does that look like? It's different for everyone! All I do know is that for the first time, I feel truly comfortable in my skin and how I look. I don't care about the trends and what society tells us we should do. To me. that's been the best thing about turning 40!

Mature skin is real in the sense of collagen production/ cell turnover slowing, bone/ muscle loss, gravity...there's only so much that skincare and makeup can do as we age and many health conditions can accelerate the process. Do the best you can with what you've got and don't define yourself by your looks.

I've been a makeup artist for 18 years, and I love working with mature skin. For some reason, I find that a lot of women would give up when they noticed they had mature skin. I love taking the time to show them that with a few simple changes to their routine, they can feel good about them selves again. I also enjoy showing a few makeup tips to help freshen up the skin. I appreciate your videos because I told myself 15 years ago that if I don't think there's anything more to learn about the makeup industry than, it's time I get out of the game.

Aging is wild, man. I have a friend in her mid-50s who I swore was in her early-40s when I met her. I have a friend in her late-20s who looks much older. I myself am 32 and am frequently told I look 21, while a good friend the exact same age looks at least 5 years older than we actually are. Genetics, skincare, climate, stress, job hazards, etc all play a role in how your skin ages, but things like hairstyles, clothing, manner of speaking all play a role in how old we are perceived to be as well. V Sauce does a great video about this topic that I highly recommend!

Genetics are HUGE. I have lived as if I have been on a mission to make every lifestyle decision to make myself age as fast as possible. And I am constantly carded and get shocked reactions about my age. Both of my parents look decades younger than their age, so I have to give them all the credit. I have certainly done myself NO favors. 😬 And yes, I agree style and personality play a big role. I have always been a late bloomer and frankly a lot more immature than a lot of people I know. People def seem to pickup on that.

Saying this was the makeup they needed for their "mature skin". I have since bombarded her with products that make zero claims of "mature skin friendly" and she has loved all of them. She's even discovered she loves a vibrant berry blush. Which we all know is taboo for the people over 40 **dramatic eye roll**

I’d love a part two of this video to continue the discussion. I agree that it was so valuable to be able to see that clear, unfiltered footage of a couple of people’s 30-something-year-old skin to realize that they are both “normal” and we are all “normal” too! After becoming a mom at 29 I was startled by the rapid signs of aging started to see. It was kind of depressing and I didn’t know if I should just surrender and accept that my youth was gone and learn to live as a mature woman. It sounds silly, but aging can be hard, especially as a woman, especially when what you (think you) look like doesn’t match what you feel like. I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts on some makeup techniques that might affect the perception of age.

The problem is we have people all over the internet getting work done/using filters and then saying they are naturally aging… so just like everything else when it comes to beauty( mostly praying on women’s insecurities about aging) we have people criticizing other people on the internet based off of lies of what a certain age is “supposed” to look like. It’s extremely ageist. If you are getting work done( non surgical or surgical) you aren’t aging “naturally” that’s just what is. These days no one knows what a 30yr old is supposed to look like lol.

No. As a teacher you learn very quickly that little kids don't really have a concept of how age manifests in human appearance beyond 'my age +/-2 years' and 'a lot older than me' If they're damn near genius level, they can additionally guess whether you're older or younger than their parents. If they're genius and really well-mannered, they will tell you you look young, because that's what is socially favourable. But apart from that, don't mind kids' thoughts on how old you might be

I was a California kid/teen in the 70s, constantly in the pool, constantly in the sun. Sunburns were a Summer right of passage. We would “lay out” in the sun for hours. In that era, we were basically always outside. I was especially since my family had a pool and when not in the pool, outside hiking, going to the lake, riding my bike, and playing sports. Really popular Coppertone commercials and ads all over billboards and magazines would feature a baby with only swimsuit bottoms on at the beach and a dog pulling her bottoms down exposing her white little butt against a bronzed body 😂 It was a “Coppertone Tan” and the “tanning lotion” (that’s what it was called) was like an SPF 4. We were lead to believe it helped you tan darker and not burn. Lol SPF 4! The Coppertone tanning oil was SPF 2!! Anyways… I’m 63 now and yes my skin has paid dearly for those summers. Lots of great memories though 😁

I think a lot of what’s called aging isn’t really aging but damage, use , photoaging. Technically for women, hormones only go down a few years prior to menopause. And average at at menopause is 52.8. Before that biologically nothing big is happening. But as an immigrant one thing I notice a lot in patients in the states is that women have more stress here in their family raising years because men do much less house and child work. So the women often do the bulk of everything and neglect self care. So many women simply forget daily sunscreen even and absolutely don’t have time for a long skin care routine. It’s also this idea that you get old suddenly in your 30s. Why? What happens? Hormones don’t decline by much at that age, not enough to age one under normal circumstances. In other countries nobody thinks you get old that young. It’s probably worse for light skinned women who are living in environments that aren’t natural for their skin type, as they get much more sun damage. I specialize in post menopausal women in aesthetics and usually I see a massive glow up when the kids have moved out and they have more time for self care or even after a divorce, if they had a husband that was basically dead weight that she had to carry the burden of.

Agree. Many women have to carry, not just the physical burdens, of raising children and keeping house, but the emotional burdens and worry of their kids and sometimes even their relationship with their partner too. And some even have to take up the task of maintaining their family's relationship with their in-laws because their partner won't bother. Usually on top of having their own job outside of the home. And all that is considered acceptable by society, even at the expense of her mental and physical health. I'm so glad there's a trend of husbands being expected to contribute to their families more than just financially and I hope it continues.

I’m almost fifty but because I stay away from the sun, and wear sunscreen religiously (you know, 1/4 teaspoon on face every two hours, same on the neck), I don’t even have any wrinkles and photo damage. So my skin doesn’t look “mature.” Paula of Paula’s Choice did say that age is not a skin type. Thank you so much for this video. I feel like so many of us need this.
