Great tips on car buying. Usually always dead, rather than alive, uglier the better, long as it's solid. Complete as possible, even disasssembled, little missing parts add up. Never be afraid to approach people, in as friendly manner as possible. I once bought a 56 210 that initally all I could see of it was the back third of. Owner had gotten disgusted, and just shoved it over the hill, let it roll till it ran into a huge hedge row, and bury itself. Very unfriendly guy, refused to speak, or even acknowlege my presence for almost 20 minutes. Then replied only in mono-syllables and grunts. But I was determined to not leave until he spoke or threw me off the property. A deal was struck, gamble? Hell yes! Full of old newspapers dash high. However upon clean out, what a jewel! Hurst shifter, SW gauges, parts galore, time cards, it ended up being a former local record holder no less. Supposedly blown engine, that I not only drove in that car, but swapped into another, that I drove for 12 years, and sold running. Sound like a D&D scenario?

Hey Dan I've worked in the same body shop over 30 years as a painter and I've painted ever paint known to man. And had some òf the best spray guns money can buy but I can take a 40 dollar spray gun and do as nice of a job as I could with a 600 hundred dollar gun a good gun don't make the painter just like high dollar tools and shops don't build a better car I've painted cars in sheads that were dirty and did better jobs then some guys did in 120k spray bake spray booths it's just like the good gun deal it's not who made it but who sprayed it that matters. 😮

Dan I sure agree with you. Buy the best car you can afford. Preferably a good runner driver you can improve as you go. That is what I have always done. I also stay away from cars everyone else wants. I also don't mind four doors. They are cheaper and look the same from the steering wheel forward.

Some people have lost their ever lovin' minds on the price they want for a rusted out piece of junk! They want a restored price and they don't get that the car is only worth that price if it's completely restored! I have tried to explain this to a couple of people who wanted a ridiculous price for something you would have to completely rebuild from the ground up.

You KIDS are Rookies, I have been doing this for 40 years, long before there was an internet and in the golden age when you could buy a 1969 Dodge Charger that needed a trans for $200.00. SPOT ON. Face to Face cash only. If you want top dollar, clean the glass and put on nice wheels....that's the top two things that makes a car look good.

Very accurate on your perspective of buying these junkers. I currently have an 87 conquest sitting in my yard that was a "hey if you want this for 600 i'll drop it off at your house". I can't reall sell itbecause it's sat for 20+ years and is missing brakes, trans, and gastank. Can't wait to write the marketplace ad when I Hopefully get this thing running and driving again, but boy the beatdown on the price could be aggressive due to asthetics.

I've owned an old 4wd with a blown engine,99 chevy trailblazer, for five years, and it keeps on being put on the back burner. This year is the year for engine replacement, and total back on the road repairs cause new 4wd vehicles are just through the roof on cost, and used ones too, and this one is fairly straight and no rust holes, with a towing hitch already installed that I can use for camping or hunting/fishing. I'm one of those people who refuse offers for it,...repeatedly. of course, none of them offering wanted to put down money of any type, they sort of "let me get tis out of your driveway for free" offered.

Dan forgot to add when selling a project 90% of the time you always lose the labor cost you have in the ride. That averages around $100/ hour too. So you might have 20k in labor that you'll never get back on a 10k car.

To the best I can remember you bought the 2 55’s after you sold the chevelle and you were driving the Nova. I’m a Nova guy and that was when I never missed your post. You started on the 55 doing something I always wanted to do! We even had the lines chalked out and I wouldn’t let my uncle cut it. And it was a 57 4 door. People then we’re making stubby’s that was two short I wanted to try what you did! Bolt on the 2 doors and weld the panel. Migs weren’t around much in 85 and my uncle said we would warp it. Then he sold it. It took me from 85 to 2009 to get another one. And it’s a real 2 door. You joke because you have 5 there easy!!! I’m not a hater but I’m calling bull shit. And no mine ain’t for sale until I die,but could be soon if everything but wages keep going up. Love y’all smoooooo y’all later

The one thing I knew about myself going into my first old car is that if I can’t drive it, I will lose interest. So, I knew better than to take my first old car apart. I knew it would never go back together. So, I know I would never buy the cars Dan buys. Seeing how hard it is (with my skill level), just proves that I can only buy running, driving cars. TL;DR know yourself, buy accordingly.

Love these Q and A's with coat tail girl. The big question to ask yourself. Do you really want this to be your hobby and do you have time for a hobby? I notice often, its a lot easier to watch dan work in his garage than to go out and work on your own stuff, cheaper too, not as satisfying but not as frustrating. Its great when it goes well, but thats not super often. Finally and as others have said, buy something as complete as possible. Its easy to get nickled and dimmed into the thousands. Also, don't buy if they don't repop panels for it. Finally, really, if you're just a hobbyist, I think the realistic (and better goal as dan shows us) is just create a basic runner and driver, get out and enjoy. Not many have the time, skill, money, space or patience for a frame off project that will be finished in your lifetime... instead get a driver and enjoy it over your lifetime.

Your right, now that new cars and truck are super expensive, the classis have gone through the roof. Example: super nice first gen camaro, ls3, 5 or 6 speed, roadster shop spec chassis, 9" ford rear, TMI interior = $150,000 easy. That build you may have $50k-60k into, ridiculous.

Thanks for posting experienced tips. She did ask a decent question I think because I once left a note with my # in the wiper which ended up as a purchase for me some time later. And agree that it helps to know the type of car so you can recognize it as complete, original, or not "teenagered" before. And be sure to arrive early in the day, no meeting when it gets dark. BTW, I love that my 70 was originally Dk. green which I had to repaint from red when I got it. Brutal hobby I agree! Also found I need to do my own work - paying others is crazy $$
