180 | EP44 | The Hubert Eaves IV Interview
Normally bass players are ALL chops or all groove. Hubert Eaves IV has it all. It was back in 1997 when we first discovered his bass playing thanks to Erykah Badu Live. In this episode Ian and Scott talk to Hubert about the making of that incredible album. Who said pocket has to be boring?
In this Episode you're going to learn:
- How Hubert got started on drums at the age of 3.
- How he was inspired to play bass by Bootsy Collins and Prince
- Why he has Chris Rock to thank for his endorsement with MTD.
- Why Erykah Badu Live is still Scott’s favourite album
- And much, much more!

I'm 21 and I'm currently trying to make my way as a bassist in the music scene(I know i have a long way to go), the Live album has been a big influence on me and Hubert has definitely become a huge inspiration for me as a bass player. Thanks Scott and Ian for this interview.

Hubert is so cool. I had the opportunity to meet him backstage at the Iridium one time. Very cool, very humble AND very confident. He is in the stratosphere compared to my bass playing but he was happy to chat and just talk about playing. Won't forget that moment.

I can't get over how honest and down to earth this interview was! Scott and Ian channelling all of our inner fanboys and Hubert just chilling and staying grounded the entire time. Can't wait to here the Hubert Eaves IV band and to see the talk show!! By the way, I'm one of the fortunate beginners that has been learning through SBL from day one! I'm concentrating on the fundamentals and loving every minute of it!! Thanks for the inspiration!!

All these years, I had never looked up who played on that album! This has been very informative and made me a Hubert Eaves IV fan for sure. Another album from that era that has informed my bass playing (and band arranging) was Jill's Scott's 2001 live album "Experience: Jill Scott 826+"...I only recently learned that a 17-year old Thaddeus Tribbett played bass on it. Would love to see you guys interview him as well...hint hint,😉😉

Thanks for this great moment, kind of inspiration for minimalist bass approach (less is more). I play drum since 30 years and bass since 2 years, and i follow à similar way : trying to let space between notes to have Time to appreciate the sustain i love so much on dark jazz ride cymbal. So nice mutual respect in this interview, congratulations to all of you.
