I've just unboxed and plugged in my Finally v2 With Bass in Mind... literally every bad stuff I had in my sound just disappeared. Every hiss.. gone. The sound is soooo clear, and now I can actually start sculpting it with my FC Shallow Water. Best tube DI so far (didn't try the Noble yet..).

Hey Ian, what do think of the DISO Plus DLX Dual Line Isolators?
@NelsonMontana12342 күн бұрын
Neck-through has more sustain -- which isn't necessarily preferable.

Harley Bentons are the WORST choice. Besides being glitchy, they're in Germany with no outlets in the U.S. So, if you have a problem, you're on your own. Even if it's brand new. In order to return it you'll have to get it registered with customs and then pay to have it shipped back and pay AGAIN to have it re-shipped. If you live in America, DO NOT BUY HARLEY BENTON!!!

I can't believe you put Blu deTiger on a podcast and treated her as a serious player. She is barely scratching the surface of being a bassist. I know little girls are a untapped market for you guys, but Sharon is a Million times the player , she can sing and write. A truly accomplished bass girl. If anyone deserves a signature Fender model it's her
@gimmeagig3 күн бұрын
I think this girl is a genius at self promotion. But she is so overblown. Kinga Glyk is worthy of recognition and a Fender Bass model. So is Rhonda Smith and probably many other female bassists. But BluedeTiger???? You have got to be kidding me!

My worst basses -- a 70's Mexican Jazz. Total junk. They got better. A Peavy. What was I thinking? An EB3. I dig it when I hear some gusy playing it but could not bond with it at all. And worst of all -- a Fodera. A toneless wonder. Biggest con job company on the market.
@NelsonMontana12345 күн бұрын
I owned a Fodera and it was the biggest disappointment of my career. They're selling "snob-appeal." There is nothing special about it at all other than it cost five times as much as basses that are far better. I tried to love it. It played okay but it didn't cut live and didn't record well. I had to accept that it's a con job and I got suckered. And they look dorky. I finally sold it and never looked back.

I am so glad y'all talked about the inflammation, and the carnivore diet. I'm going to have to start I did the same thing going to the doctors the inflammation in my joints and they took all the x-rays to see if it was arthritis and they kept saying it's very little arthritis and my doctor did say something about inflammation so now I'm learning more. Thanks for mentioning that❤

I LOVE your reflection on that performance, that "narcissism" section is very true and honest. A lot of people today don't realize, that being self conscious is not low self esteem, but rather the opposite. Loved hearing this, will probably listen more often.

Great job Ian not only talking about strings. I love all the information it can help me out a lot as a bass player who didn’t play for like 40 years. Now starting back up as I close in on retirement I am having the time of my life playing bass and collecting some Bass guitars I couldn’t afford as a kid. Even more important than being a great bassist is to be a great human being and care about others. Thanks for sharing in every way.

I have found boiling your strings makes the core brittle. You can wash strings in the sink, with just Hot Water (5cm). and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid. Take off one string at a time, soak for a minute or 2 - scrub up and down with steel wool/scourer a few times thoroughly, dry off, put on. Works best with stainless steel strings. Theyll come back to about 80-90% new sounding , depending on how well you scrubbed them. I get about 2 years out of a set of a Dingwall stainless 6 set.

I ‘discovered’ flats about 3 years ago when I bought a Hofner Club bass. It was transforming! Now I have flats on all of my basses apart from tapewound on my fretless. Love em

There is another complication...which is that most through-necks are laminated rather than single piece. That does make a difference to sustain etc. The epitome of this is the Kubicki, which has 32 laminates and is bolt-on, but sustains more like a cross between a carbon neck and a neck-through. Truth is you cannot be happy until you have at least one of every kind of bass!!

expensive instruments are mostly about branding. A fender bass for example. Two pieces of wood joined together by 4 bolts cant cost 5k

33:00 I was listening to something a guitar manufacturer said, I believe it was Suhr. He made Ian's point that quarter sawn maple necks are more stable than flat sawn. However, he said that there's basically no difference between the two if they've been roasted in terms of stability.

Fender makes a set of flats 55 to 100, they're great, seem to be the ticket for somebody wanting a flexible bottom string and a more rigid top. I have the medium(50-100), love 'em to bits.

It was so great to hear about your experience with the orchestra! As a former orchestra pro (shoutout to my friends you mentioned Kristen Bruya and Kate Nettleman!), I can totally identify with the "strange cats" phenomenon of electric bassists joining the orchestra. What's funny is I've switched sides and played electric more over the past couple decades, and have the same kind of imposter syndrome in reverse when gigging on electric. SBL has been phenomenal in helping me educate myself on all things bass guitar; I've learned more in a few weeks digging through archives of videos than I have in a couple decades playing casually!

Got my Fender American player used for half price. Neck was badly warped, Fender replaced it under warranty at no cost, it is now the best playing bass I've ever played. Used is the way to go IF you know what you're buying into.

Ian! Thank you for taking the deep dive into strings. I appreciate you playing the string along with sharing characteristics of the strings. Very helpful! I’m thankful you followed your heart and talked about the strings of one’s “heart” too. I can relate with you on infeld flats. They are my fav to play… buttery smooth to play and have a sonic depth to their sound that is melodic and beautiful. However, I agree the decay is short and they were and adjustment being on long scale. I’ve had TI flats on a Warwick rockbass corvette I call Frankenstein. (totally modified with John East electronics and 3 pickups. LoL ) The short decay and sound of string doesn’t fit the style of music I’m playing at the moment. So I am going to try flat chromes on Frankenstein.

Ian! You’re an awesome person! Also, Thank you for taking the deep dive into strings. I appreciate you playing the string along with sharing characteristics of the strings. Very helpful! I’m thankful you followed your heart and talked about the strings of the “heart” too. You are not alone with putting new roundwounds on a bass and then don’t play it until a session or gig. The struggle is real!😂 TI’s are my fav string to play… buttery smooth to play and have a sonic depth to their sound that is melodic and beautiful…especially when playing octaves and chords… However, you’re right, the decay is short. TI’s took a long time to get set up on a long scale. I’ve had TI flats on a Warwick rockbass corvette that I call Frankenstein. (totally modified with John East electronics and 3 pickups. LoL ) The short decay and sound of string doesn’t fit the style of music I’m playing at the moment. So I am going to try flat chromes on Frankenstein.

Most budget bass guitars and even normal guitars are the parts. The parts and the finish. The neck is the most important part, next is probably the pickups. You can even get by with cheap everything else.
