The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) is a Canadian retail business group. A fur trading business for much of its existence, HBC now owns and operates retail stores in Canada, the United States and parts of Europe, including Belgium and Germany. The company's namesake business division is Hudson's Bay, and other divisions include Galeria Kaufhof, Gilt, Home Outfitters, Lord & Taylor, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
The company was incorporated by English royal charter in 1670 as The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay and functioned as the de facto government in parts of North America before European states and later the United States laid claim to some of those territories.
It was once the world's largest landowner, with the area of the Hudson Bay watershed, known as Rupert's Land, having 15% of North American acreage. From its long-time headquarters at York Factory on Hudson Bay, the company controlled the fur trade throughout much of the English and later British controlled North America for several centuries. Undertaking early exploration, its traders and trappers forged relationships with many groups of aboriginal peoples. Its network of trading posts formed the nucleus for later official authority in many areas of Western Canada and the United States. In the late 19th century, with its signing of the Deed of Surrender, its vast territory became the largest portion of the newly formed Dominion of Canada, in which the company was the largest private landowner.

Something that is utterly missing from this video is the 1869 purchase of the Hudson Bay Company lands by the Dominion of Canada. This is how Canada acquired western lands, and why HBC no longer controls a huge swath of North America. In the 1869 deal, HBC was paid 100,000 pounds sterling for the land, and kept ownership of one square mile around all of its trading posts plus a percentage of the fertile farmland. When the railways were built in later years, these lands became very valuable, and were sold by the HBC for a considerable profit.

The ending was rushed and fuzzy. Should have talked about how The Bay rebranded to look like its old classic self and went back to "Hudson's Bay". And how they bought Saks fifth Avenue because some people I talked to thought it was Saks that bought HBC not the other way around.

I had never heard of HBC, until last year when they announced to come to the Netherlands. This happened shortly after the closing of a large warehouse named V&D in the Netherlands. They are now opening new stores in the old V&D buildings. But I have to see of the HBC is successful in the Netherlands. There are already rumours of investors that are not happy with the new stores in the Netherlands.

HBC completely rebranded themselves in 2010 getting away from trying to compete with lowrent brands like Walmart and went back to what they always did best: selling high quality goods for reasonable prices and they're thriving now.

There's a couple of mistakes with this. Radisson did not get his furs confiscated. There was a fine and then he had to pay taxes on it, which him and de grosseliers (his brother In law) did not want to do. So they escaped hidden in a band of first Nations and then escaped to Boston to sell the furs. You should read his journal. Which is his first hand account on what happened. Its quite cool. Btw I really like the fact you used some paintings from the people who actually lived through the fur trade. Really good video.

The Hudson Bay is the Gate to the North-West-Passage, sometimes blocked by ice on the Sea. But the ice could be under-rounded by trade submarines like for example the Typhoon Class (the Antonow of the submarines), much bigger than each airplane could be and dive under ice-layors of a few hundred metres making a dream of humanity real. Many truck loadings could be loaded there on, not as on a Triple-E, but many, as on river-transport boats (Danubia, Rhine etc.) The economy-geografics are to find the best and most efficiant route for that purpose.

I have mixed feelings about this video. On one hand, I'm glad to see a channel I enjoy tackle a subject that I care a lot about. On the other, while the broad strokes are largely correct, a lot of the details are not. Also, please don't call us halfbreeds. While historically correct, that term has long-since fallen into disuse since a) few "halfbreeds" are 50/50; b) breed has an animalistic connotation; and c) it implies that we are somehow incomplete as a people.

The fur action houses were sold off in the 5 years+ previous to this event, however in Montreal via "How Its Made" the HBC still has an equivalent of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange BUT FOR FURS ONLY! Ommited or Notable : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_North_West_Company www.northwest.ca/operations/canada.php www.northmart.ca/ I don't quite see Walmart killing off HBC, but the upcoming poleshift might ...

@Lawliet734
@Lawliet734 6 жыл бұрын
+drnycmedia In a free market/capitalist system, the government is forbidden from helping individual companies as that would give them unfair advantage over competitors. Even China would not save failing companies. Do you think Canadian taxpayers want Canada to be more socialist than China? HBC is a part of Canadian history, and it will be no less a part if the company were to close.
@BlinkinMad
@BlinkinMad 6 жыл бұрын
L Lawliet not true, auto sector and banks were bailed out by taxpayers during the 2008 recession. However my example was to avoid an economic depression but it stands that the government can help companies. Yet, picking and choosing would create unfair competition in more normal circumstances. But you’re right, Canada wouldn’t bail a company like HBC, unless it had a stake or some sort of geopolitical worth.
