Tbh a lot of the early stuff shows they had very little musical theory knowledge. It does however scream raw talent to put together what they did. Funnily enough once they did know their stuff musically speaking it turned off a lot of early fans but it sure put them in the history books and raised them into the stratosphere. Btw I prefer the early stuff :)

Great track and still holds up . I lost my brother recently and remember him buying it back in 1980. In the year 1980 it felt like aliens had arrived on the music scene. Bands like OMD , Visage, ultravox and John Fox. A time when Britain led the way musically. Everything since has been a rehash of music from the past. Absolutely no originality today. Back then bands had the freedom to experiment and take chances. Today the charts are about cruise ship style acts and ten apenny bland singers doing vocal acrobatics.

Such a huge fan of the early stuff like the dignity of labour e.p and reproduction. So many great records from them in the early days. They were kinda ahead of their time really so people struggled to understand what they were doing back then. I loved kraftwerk and Moroder so for me they were a logical step in the right direction. I would love to see an original line up tour.

The music's great, of course, but I think I also reacted to the tongue-in-cheek nature of the early HL lyrics, which separated them out from more po-faced synth bands and artists (who I like equally, but differently!). The songs sound serious, but they also amuse, and there's a freedom and originality of form and theme to them that's impressive. References to such diverse things as sericulture, Steve McGarrett, wanting to be The Pyramids, a record swallowing all record shops, a drug known as Dominion, etc. I had a similar reaction to the Stranglers' post-punk melodic era lyrics, that similarly managed to perfectly fit eclectic wording into great music. Very memorable words and phrases used (still easily recalled decades later), offbeat, poetic, and thought-provoking.
