Recommended books:
Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945 by Tony Judt. Best book on the period available. Absolutely phenomenal and a complete tome (worth every penny, though).
A Concise History of Hungary by Miklós Molnár. Like all of the other books in this series its a fantastic introduction to all Hungarian history. Not the cheapest but still a great book for people interested in both Communist and all other Hungarian history.

Are you kidding me? Colleges student wrote a manifesto to the Soviets w/ their demands. The liars (Soviets) agreed to them & left Hungary but came back & that was the 1956 Hungarian Revolution which my father took part in. My mom had left a few yrs. prior to. I have the pictures my dad took of the Soviet tanks rolling into Budapest while Hungarians were getting off of work. The Hungarians blew up tanks, hung the communists in the streets, etc. The average age of the Freedom Fighter was 18 yrs. old. But 14 yr. old girls & boys also fought w/ the weapons my dad had hidden & gave to them.

I always found it interesting how the Yugoslavs, the Chinese, and the Albanians stood up to the Soviets. Even the Poles in the early 20's and the Finn's in the Winter War fought for what was right. Just goes to show how you should feel pride towards your nation.

My grandad was one of those many thousands of people to flee Hungary during the revolution and he revisited many times years later to see family and friends. He went to the old Secret Police HQ many years after the fall of the USSR whilst it was a museum and saw that on the walls were memorials and names of people tortured and executed by the Secret Police and he cried because he recognised a name as being one of his old friends that he didn’t know had been killed.

That is so sad. I am Bulgarian (British-born), my parents didn't flee from purge, but rather for better economic opportunities, because Bulgaria was in a bad economic state (btw we visit regularly, and I honestly prefer to call myself Bulgarian, not British). The saddest part of Cold War Bulgaria was the collectivisation of Agriculture. My grandparents tell me experiences of how during early socialism, their friends relied on livestock which they loved, but then the socialist guards came over and took the livestock. It's honestly really sad, and even if I wasn't alive then, I am always on the verge of tears when I think about or when my grandparents tell me about stories from the agriculture-collectivisation and seizing of livestock. Perhaps communism could have turned out well long-term, but it didn't, and the country never returned to old status-quo post-socialism, hence why the country is corrupt and in ruins now. At least there are still beautiful parts of the country worth visiting.

Fun fact, the olympics were held in the same year, and Hungary, who was independent for like half a year, got a team of their own into the year's Olympics. This is significant because that year the water polo finals was between the Soviet Union and Hungary. And what ensued was the most brutal and violent olympic match in history. The water in the pool turned red from the blood, players on both sides were coming in and out of the match with broken bones, cuts, bites, and fractures. And in the end, the Hungarians won gold. It was a powerful symbol for us at the time. We have always been good at water polo. And even if the Soviets eventually stopped our revolution, we still beat the shit out of them in the Olympics.

Hungary was not part of the USSR, they were only a satellite state of the Soviets, but a nation on their own right. They had their own team at every Olympics since 1896 (except for 1920 and 1984 when they did not compete).

When Nagy Imre was executed , he was just thrown somewhere random without a proper burial. He was later identified by his clothing by some family members In 1989.06.16 a re-burial was held in Budapest Heroes’ square , over 20 thousand people showed up. Just a few months later , Hungary was officially finally democratic

But you can apply that argument anywhere, and it would always make an event seem short, even half a century. Hungarian revolution of 1956 is also a great example of Polish-Hungarian brotherhood. One was of the causes of revolution were protests in Poland in June 1956. Also after Hungarian revolution had failed, Polish civilians were sending supplies and blood to help.

Thomas Reed, like S Atazas said, the US didn't support Hungary because around that same time Britain and Israel were in Egypt, without the US being informed before hand. It would have been two faced in the eyes of the international community for the US to help Hungary while the Suez Crisis was happening.

Another note you missed is that the original protests which sparked the revolution were actually a support protest for the 1956 Poznan uprising (Against Soviet rule) in Poland, a country which many Hungarians considered dear to their hearts.

My grandpa told me a story when I asked him about the events of '56. "After the revolution broke out and we had no food left, we had to stand in line for bread. There I was standing in the line at the mere age of 12 with my mother and a soviet tank just rolled around the corner and shot into the crowd thinking we were protesters. Thankfully my mother dropped to the ground in time so were weren't caught."

Do the Prague spring next, it’s interesting because the government (Czechoslovakia) didn’t leave the Warsaw Pact or reform their economy “There was no threat to socialism” said Nicholas ceascue (leader of Romania) and even got support by some Warsaw Pact members(Romania). It was invaded because they did democratic reforms “Socialism with a human face” and where invaded ,the head government was friends with Leonid Brezhnev (head of the U.S.S.R.) but that did not stop the U.S.S.R. from invading the government did not resist but the people fought back.

One thing not mentioned in this clip (presumably to keep it short): The USSR had been pulling troops out of Hungary, unsure of how to handle the situation. Then the Suez Crisis happened when Israel, France and the UK invaded Egypt. The USSR used this to divert attention from Hungary and theatrically threatened to fire nuclear missiles at France and the UK, scaring everyone that WW3 might start. With the diversion successful, that’s when the Soviets sent in the tanks! This was another reason why Eisenhower was so angry at the British, French, and Israelis.

Underestimated comment. After Stalin's death western and eastern block countries were trying to push and scavenge neutral or weak states. Most people don't know but majority of hungarian revolters were fascist troops pardoned by government after war. Well, they just took a bit of time, organised and tried to seize the power when winners killing pro-commue civilians they could get. There were no «democratic» forces in this battle. Just remember - if students are revolting, it means something is very cheesy and will be a lot of blood to justify even more blood.

I read that during the 1956 Olympics the Hungarian water polo team had a fight with the Soviet team and the pool was red with blood. Not surprisingly, most of the team didn't go home but stayed in Melbourne which is as far as you can get from Budapest.

Kádár has a very mixed reputation in Hungary. For one, he was the one who betrayed the revolution and sided with the Soviets who made him the leader of the country, and which resulted in the execution and imprisonment of hundreds. On the other hand, he was the one who initiated reforms starting in the 1960s and made Hungary the most liberal country in the Warsaw Pact, with relatively good living standards compared to other Eastern Bloc nations and was well-liked by the majority of people during his 30-year reign.

@@neonknights TBH it is hard to choose who didn't betray the revolution. :D Nagy Imre also denied the people of their will of change which led to the long protest in front of the Parliament and ended in the shootings. Later on he came back and sided with them again but it was also a betrayal. Also let's not forget how the Police and the army itself basically vanished from Budapest. They basically were like -> yep, f*ck this, I am going to relatives in the countryside. And only after Kádár came with the russians they came back :D Also in the early days of the revolution it was mostly the intellectuals who started it but later on they just left and the working class fought. So yeah. Complicated. Like every other situation in Hungary :D

A boy came entered our class At St Kevin's Cathholic grammar school in Queens, NY. I think it was in the 4th grade. He had fled Hungary with his parents after the revolution. The nuns made sure he was welcomed. I was him a few years ago in a class reunion. He had become quite successful.

Thanks for posting this. My childhood best friend had parents who escaped from Hungary from this time. His mother escaped with her parents through Yugoslavia. However, another interesting footnote was during the invasion of soviet troops as what happened at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. A lot of the Hungarian team defected during this event, and his dad was one of them (from the fencing team, they even won Gold!) This is perhaps a pretty cool side story to this historical event you featured, perhaps even worthy of its own video.

Was just watching "The Silent Revolution", on Neflix German film about young people in East Berlin who dared to hold two minutes' silence in protest against the Soviet crackdown on Hungary.

The rebels had 3 major groups. Group 1: the anti-stalinist socialists who wanted a council republic like in the 1919 hungarian soviet republic. Group 2: the liberals who wanted a western liberal democracy. Group 3: the fascists who wanted to return into Nickolas Horthy's fasistic system or to a similar fascist system. The only common thing about these groups was that all of them wanted an independent Hungary. Since the government (1956-89) kept everything in secret it's impossible to know which group was the majority or the minority and anyone who claims that they know is a lier.

1956 - the year my mother fled Hungary - but her mother and sister remained. She made her way to Austria and accepted an arranged marriage with my father (who immigrated to the US shortly after the war and was sponsored by the US soldiers who captured him around Normandy as a 17 year old “soldier” working in NYC as a long shore man and then an accountant... also fought for the - right - side in Korea) my mother didn’t dare to go back until 1977 when her mom was dying and my brother and I got to see Communism first-hand... a neighbor at my aunt’s apartment reported “Americans” to the secret police... decades late I went back in 1992 and that same neighborhood apologized and became a close friend

A lot of these hungarian refugees fled to switzerland. Many were students and all were accepted into universities to finish their degrees. As thanks they left a stone plate memorial, which is still inside a university displayed to this day.

Great video, however it wasn't soviet troops who shot at the protesters in front of the Parliament, rather the Hungarian secret police known as ÁVH. There is a good book on the events from first hand accounts from Éva Orbán. Not sure if there is an English print however.
