It's funny though he goes on to point out this is because of how the Chinese saw the British as barbarians. He doesn't cover the beginning when China was selling silk and tea to the British and all the silver British pounds were all ending up in China because China would not allow reciprocated trade. Hoarding to break the British empire. So the British fought back by selling them drugs and bombarding the Chinese coast line. The Chinese in China also were and are still very racist towards "round eyes". No one was on their best behavior back then. Britain did just take what it wanted and deployed less than honorable tactics, but all is fare in love and war. You should expect anything.

@@fuck_Russian_bots back in the old days I think just about every major civilisation / regional power from the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Chinese and Japanese etc., deem foreigners of other ethnicities as barbarians. Frequent raids on the frontier by foreign enemies and the lack of international trade probably hardened those beliefs further. As for the trade imbalance with Qing China, I think it's because China had all the agricultural and natural resources to make whatever they wanted already; and what it really wanted was the industrial tech from the West which China didn't have. Essentially, the same trade imbalance reason as the West's current trade war with China.

Not opium seeds... The actual unflowering poppy pods are scored with special knives in the morning and the latex that weeps out is collected with another curved knife-like tool in the evening. That latex dries and that is opium, not the seeds. Poppy seeds do contain a number of alkaloids though and a very dangerous tea can be stewed from them. Dangerous because the actual variety and amounts of the various alkaloids are impossible to know before drinking it, so it's possible and very easy to overdose on it.

Watching the mighty Chinese Empire being BTFO by the much smaller British forces forced the Japanese to re-examine their policy of isolationism, and the outcome of the First Opium War was a big factor in their accepting Matthew Perry's trading demands in order to gain the technology to defend themselves.

@HistoryMatters
@HistoryMatters 5 жыл бұрын
That's the plan. Basically there'll be about 8 minutes of video per week but the topics will be much broader. For example next week I'm doing a video on the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and then one why South Africa gave up its nuclear weapons. The format is allowing me to continue doing overview stuff and also branch into asking deeper questions. I'm thinking of doing a video on the historicism of Shield-Maidens, just as another example. It's very exciting for me.

I actually prefer the 10 minute format. It was your Brand. I don't mind if your release times are slower if that's what it takes to go to the old format. I do agree quality > quantity, but it doesn't seem like shortening the videos actually improves your drawing or the script. If anything, the new plan on constant releases will make it more difficult to raise quality.

A few points: The Qing Dynasty was ruled by the Manchurians. To most Chinese, who are Han, the Qing was not considered a Chinese dynasty. It was seen more like the period of Mongol rule. Lin Zexu, while a Qing official, was a Han. Part of the reason he confiscated the opium is because he saw the damage it was doing. In fact, part of the reason opium was even being imported was that the Manchurians saw opium as a way of subduing the Han. Also, Lin is the surname, not Zexu, and he is revered among many Chinese. Lastly, the reason the Chinese army was so poorly armed is not because of a lack of technology, but it was because the Manchurian didn't want a strong army, since the bulk of the army were Han, and if well-armed, they could more easily overthrow the Manchurians.

No mention of the preluding tea-silver crisis in Britain?
@scarletcrusade77
@scarletcrusade77 5 жыл бұрын
^ This is a big reason why they went to war because of the unfair middle men called Hongs, that made trade with china super expensive for China plates and tea which the UK wanted a lot of. So to balance this they sold loads of opium to a market that already was hooked on it, the Brits didn't just force it on none drug users there must have been a market for them to sell to in the first place. So they did that to get silver back from the Chinese since they only traded in silver so they could buy what they wanted. Shame that 10 minute history didn't mention all of this rather than making Britain sound like drug dealing imperialists who did it for laughs.

@@scarletcrusade77 You seem to have forgotten that OPIUM WAS ILLEGAL and Britain SMUGGLED it into China to sell it. The British had a monopoly over opium-growing in India and the British East India Company and other British companies smuggled it across the border in classic drug cartel fashion.
@scarletcrusade77
@scarletcrusade77 5 жыл бұрын
@@rebecca4680 Well yeah they smuggled it into china even though it was illegal, I never said the British were saints, they were doing it dirty because the Chinese ware doing them dirty. Having a monopoly on China wear and black tea which was in super high demand in Victorian Britain so they did what they did to get what they wanted, since Chinese traded in Silver only they have to get it somehow. So they sold opium to people who wanted it. Could have been easily avoided if they didn't make trade so hard with the British.
@rebecca4680
@rebecca4680 5 жыл бұрын
@@scarletcrusade77 . So China was "playing dirty" by controlling their own commodities and products? If it's your stuff, you can set the price; that's not "playing dirty". If you can't get business because the price is too high, well that's the consequence of setting your price, but it's still your right to set the price at whatever you want. The British were the only ones playing dirty by operating drug cartels and illegally selling opium in China.

Not sure if this was the best rebranding. The name "Ten Minute History" was attractive to new subscribers. You can make content under the brand name that doesn't literally fit the name while staying in line with the mission statement of (I'm supposing), "The dissemination of historical knowledge". Yet, this is a good name. I wish you well in all your future endeavors.
