Honestly the expected response was probably to say last goodbyes to a soon-to-be-dead person ... idk, it's honestly probably a step up in hopefulness? Though Peeta iirc is rather snippish when he tells Katniss about it and so that colors our view of it kinda? But yeah .. idk to me it was a case of 0 hope vs at least hope for someone else .. but also his mom's not nice already based on other events(

@@AllThoseChickens I would say it actually showcases a distinct lack of love that Peeta's family has, I mean throughout the series there are numerous people who are made stronger by the bonds they have with friends and family so I don't feel as though the point is to highlight people's LACK of care for each other (although altruism is dead in the hunger games verse)

@@AllThoseChickens Her saying that was very much out of pocket in every situation. It's almost comical how horrendously bleak and insensitive it is for her to say that, not caring one iota how her son would feel about hearing that as he gets corralled off to die. She could have said NOTHING and it would have left him with a better last impression of his mother and maybe made him less resigned to die. But leave it to the abusive parent to one up themselves at the last second and getting one final bazinga out.

Gale, not caring that Katniss has to kill people and doesn't care about killing in general if it fits his goals VS. Peeta, not wanting to kill, but being forced to just like Katniss is, willing to die for Katniss This is in the first book, the second one is more mixed since Gale is right about the revolution and getting rid of te Capitol, but Peeta is also trying to protect Katniss and everyone he cares for, forced to play along as much as she does. The final nail in the coffin for Gale was the third book - him not caring about innocents when creating the traps that would kill victims and then the rescuers. He only regretted it because it killed Prim. Peeta, under torture, manages to tell the rebels that the Capitol is planning an attack, risking his life for everyone again and then gets woven, becoming scared of Katniss. Once he realizes it, he legit wants the others to kill him since he's a threat, still trying to keep Katniss save with the lizard mutts and keeping her from committing suicide. Peeta and Katniss also communicate a lot more clearly than she does with Gale - she and Gale fight a lot more. Peetas first interaction with Katniss is saving her and her family from starvation and reminding her of a way to get food. Her first interaction with Gale is him suspecting her of stealing from him. I have this theory in love triangles - the first one to interact/meet is the one - and this point fits in multiple scenarios. Even here; Peeta first encounters Katniss at school when he hears her sing. Gale meets her later when both their dads died Also the motive of Peeta being protection and life against Gales theme of destruction, anger and death. Most of the interactions with Gale are tied around death, the hatred he feels for the Capitol (like Katniss said in the book). I didn't mind Gale as a friend, but hated when he went down the romance route. And it was clear that Katniss was confused on whether she liked him that way or not. He was basically freedom from a Capitol planned future, the spirit of the revolution. Before that, she never saw him that way.

Most of the people who had good opinions of her dad were from the Hob and Katniss was too scared to go there herself at this point. Also yeah she’s a young girl but I think it’s harder for people to give away food and things when they’re struggling with it themselves, it gets easier when she learns to hunt by herself and actually starts going over to people and learning who will be more likely to give her more as a trade or who would help her. @@nativewarmask9861 I would say he can be a bit toxic but he also has a lot of good traits. However, I dislike how he pushes his anger on the people of district 12 who are better off, the merchants. In the books, he’s just so resentful that he can’t even see they have it pretty badly too. But I also understand that this was the goal of the capitol, to turn the merchants and the coal miners against each other. However, him being toxic is seen in how angry he was that Katniss faked a romance with Peeta to save her life. Instead of being understanding that she’s traumatized and being there for her like a best friend should, he puts his romantic feelings first, barely talks to her (because of said anger) and then confesses his feelings for her out of nowhere. It just felt like he was pushing a bunch of extra problems on her when he should’ve been helping her recover from her massive trauma. It’s a sign that he doesn’t really love her because he doesn’t care about her problems and how this would affect her. Not to mention, that because he sees a future with Katniss, he keeps pushing this idea of marriage and kids on her when she makes clear that that isn’t what she wants. Rereading the books, he seems like the guy who dates a child free woman while thinking he could change her mind once he gets her in the relationship (I might be sensitive to this because I have experience with that type of relationship).

Nah thanks, that would be too simple cashbacks. And Suzanne Collins isn't like that. The only possible way would be an aftermath - Peeta, as an old man, reminisces sometimes about the past and Katniss. The thing is Peeta was pretty direct and honest about his thoughts, so I was easy to get behind what he was like. I think any other book about Panem should focus on what it was like before the dark days or when Panem was founded - or what's going on with the outside world, when after decades, Panem manages to get in connection with former Europe or something. That one would be written in the perspective of that other nation of course, having gone through their own issues. Maybe be the antithesis to Panem - complete and utter chaos without much of government that still manages to remain in control.

She is so deep in her mind and we get lost with her together, in this whole feeling of being helpless. We deep in so far to this point we are actually confused with her - about the question - why would Peeta (and gale) actually love her? This is interesting hearing how he sees her. Because he doesn't know what is going on inside, but he can only see the storm she brings with her. Her whole powerful and impressive self. Maybe we all should hear stories that happened to us from another person's eye and perspective.

But I was an older teen when the books came out and devoured them, as I have many times since and they will always be some of the best YA fiction out there! Also in the pointless Gale Vs Peeta debate, let me break it down: sure, Gale was a friend to her longer, someone who helped not only Katniss but her whole family and I think genuinely believed she’d be the girl he’d end up with… BUT all of these things he made known, “I’m the guy who jumps in and helps, Katniss is basically mine even if she hasn’t come to terms with that yet so the rest of the male population better back off”. Meanwhile, Peeta admired her for her strength and even her vulnerabilities. He helped her without anyone knowing and during/after the games, he did everything in his power to keep her safe… Even if that meant he lost her. Like they say in the books (and finally in the movies), Peeta is good! As in, truly kind, caring, selfless… good. Gale at the end of the day will do what HE thinks is right and ultimately shows that he’s out for Gale. He literally hates that Peeta is suffering because he thinks that’s the only reason she’s been pining for him. It may have taken even Katniss longer to realize it but she not only loves Peeta, she needs him. He’s the best person for her, not Gale and not just because of the games (though the fact that they can and finally do heal together is beautiful) but because she and Gale’s strong personalities would have always clashed. Gale too many times thought he knew better than Katniss and tried to make decisions for her or without talking to her. Glory for Gale is what Gale ultimately chose and unsurprisingly, he lost her for that (without spoiling more). Peeta always respected her, loved her, cherished her, valued her input… He was willing to stay by her side, knowing he was the only person she could truly be vulnerable with even if he never had her whole heart… but knowing he had it by the end meant a lot more than I think even the book showed. The movie definitely f’d that scene up! People talk about how f’d up he was after they rescued him from the capitol but, imagine being tortured in every way possible and always seeing, hearing, sensing the person you love most while it’s being done. Then when you finally break (because Peeta is stronger than anyone have him credit for besides maybe Katniss), they continue that programming to where the sight or sound of her turns you into a feral killing machine. It’s heartbreaking! And yet even then, he fights his way back for her. Not for himself, for HER. Because what gets through to him? “Stay with me” … “Always”. They both have major scars by the end of all this but they have each other and that is enough to help them heal. It’s not exactly a happily ever after but knowing that they’ll be okay and learn how to live, love, and laugh again… Together is enough. They survived and neither has to be haunted by the other. Because they survived TOGETHER. So yeah, Peeta is the hero of this story, even Katniss thinks so.

I just finished the book from his pov. It’s exceptionally well written. What I love about this is that his character is so much more interesting and way more braver than shown in the movie. I am so mad they haven’t included some lines and scenes, it would add more dimension to the story. It feels like there is no chemistry between them. But there is! I also believe the movie would be more interesting from everyone’s pov but that would be damn long. I’d still watch it tho
