I know you guys already saw the last part can't wait to see that reaction, my favorite scene is the end scene where it's a call back to katniss saying she will never have kids in the beginning of the first movie to actually making it into a world where she and others could have kids and raise them freely and safely without having to worry about them being selected in the hunger games and that ending dialogue "there are worse games to play". It’s definitely one of the best scenes in recent memory. To me it shows the best of humanity in that people, when given no other choice, will fight to make things better, giving up their lives if necessary. The flip side of that is that humans are fucking terrifying, and they will gladly run into a hail of bullet fire just for a chance to hurt their enemy. Not to mention the fact that other humans put them in that position to begin with.

The feeling that Nikki has where she can't trust anyone is perfect. In the books, you read the thoughts of Katniss which are super negative and INCESSANT. She's always paranoid of bad things happening. If the filmmakers can get that feeling without pages of inner monologue then they have done a fantastic job!

I always find this such an interesting adaptation, because in the book you only follow Katniss, in 1st person, you read all her inner thoughts and always see everything from her point of view, only knowing the things she knows. The movies are very different, they show everything that's happening, even stuff that happens without Katniss's knowledge, they follow different people and show what those people are up to, yet despite that pretty significant difference (which is kinda inevitable when adapting the story to a visual medium), they still manage to nail the same tone and emotional beats for the story.

The writing of the book is incredible. You can actually feel how unhinge Katniss is without Peeta. How she loses everything and her only moments not drowning are thanks to Primrose. Because Prim is her drive, it's her motivation, she's almost clear and sane and without any PTSD when she focuses on saving her sister, while on the other hand, you can feel that Peeta is her emotional support through trauma and she CANNOT function without him. She constantly forces herself to get on her feet, finds solace in little moments, memories of Peeta, dreams of Peeta and the pearl he gave her in Catching Fire. But both Peeta and Prim are also her drives when she makes requests to D13: it's all about Peeta and Prim being happy in D13 (or as happy as possible... if I remember correctly, in the book, Katniss also negociates something about Prim becoming a doctor in D13 or something?). It makes Peeta's brainwashing that much more heartbreaking because it PHYSICALLY and emotionally hurts Katniss. During this whole part of the story she's been drowning, hoping for something good to happen, then when something good happens (D13 finally saving Peeta and the others), it's taken away from her and used against her. This is evil genius for sure, but in the books it's even clearer how much she's so damaged that she cannot function alone anymore.

Yeah the books do such a good job especially in this 3rd one, it portrays the PTSD and just overall mental health crisis Katniss is going through, right down to the way she repeats things to herself like "My name is Katniss Everdeen, I'm in District 13, there is no more District 12..." because those were the things she knew were real and grounded her like Peeta used to. And honestly nothing in a book has affected me more than finding out Peeta had been hijacked, it's awful. Peeta is my comfort character lol

The rebel attack on the water plant always made me cry, even now. It was a little unclear to Nikki & Steven, but in the movie (& book) it was NOT Katniss' destroying the planes & thus the brick smokestack collapsing that destroyed the hospital. The Capitol's planes had bombed the hospital FIRST and came around for another go...that's when Katniss & Gale took them out. There may have been some deaths due to the stack coming down, but the hospital was destroyed before that.

But there were a few lines to indicate what was happening? Like "Kill the loyalties" from Snow is directly followed by a line about everyone in the hospital. And after that before Katniss shoots, she says very clearly "It's the hospital. They're targeting the hospital!" And then she says "They're circling back around" Sure, you can miss it the first time, but I think it is as clear as they can make it. Well, at least in my opinion. I was surprised when they thought she made the planes crash into it. I never thought of it that way. 🤔

In the book, the scene when Katniss is visiting 12 and looking at the skeletons, she keeps telling them "I killed you. And you. And you". Which is such an awful moment for her, drowning in guilt about those who died and also the ones that were suffering like Peeta and Johanna. Also, the planes Katniss and Gale shot didn't land on the hospital, the hospital was bombed before.

If i remember correctly, that was reasonably excused by the fact that 13 had just taken in about 1000 refugees from 12 and was struggling to adjust rations to accommodate everyone. The people who were fleeing the capitol thought they might get away with special treatment. The punishment was justifiably severe.

A lot of people thought the third book was very weak and didn't like the nonstop tragedy that defined it, but I think it's highly respectable that this series presents a revolution that is not romanticized. For as bad as the capitol is, the so called good guys resort to the same dirty tricks of propaganda, pretending a damaged girl is a superhuman leader when she never asked for this responsibility. It also makes you feel every ounce of the cost that rebellion and war demands. No matter how heroic or justified, every soldier and a lot of civilians are destined to wind up cannon fodder paid in short lived glory/honor and maybe a name on a wall. Then of course, Katniss and Peeta are the mirror image of a fate that can be worse than death in war, surviving but with irreparable damage.

One scene I loved in the books was when Katniss was playing with Buttercup, making her chase the light, and then gets a panic attack when she shines the light so high on the wall that Buttercup can't reach it anymore, because she realizes she is just like Buttercup, all she does is run where Snow shines his light and wants her to go, holding Peeta so far above her, unreachable.

People don't talk enough about it but besides the amazing story and acting, the hunger games also have one of the best soundtracks ever. Mockingjay is the best but both the hunger games and catching fire also have amazing bops. We Remain by Christina Aguilera is all you need to hear to understand Peeta and Karniss' dynamic. Safe and Sound and Eyes Open are amazing, Atlas as well and don't forget about Everybody Wants to Rule The World and Yellow Flicker Beat

I don't remember if the whole mockingjay thing is mentioned in the movies. But i just love the symbolism of it. The mockingjay birds are an important part of the books, they're mentioned so often. These birds are a symbol of rebellion itself, they were created accidentally, due to a mistake the capitol made in the first rebellion, the "dark days". The father of this species was the jabberjay, a muttation the capitol created (those also were the birds that the capitol used in the second arena, to torture Katniss and Finnick). These birds were able to remember and repeat conversations of the rebels, and were used as spies. When the rebels found out about it, they started telling lies to confuse. After that, the capitol released them into the wild, in hope that they would die (all jabberjays were male). And they did die off eventually, but not before mating with female mockingbirds, and passing on their genetic code. The offsprings were called Mockingjays. Although they lost the abilites that the jabberjays had, they could mimic any vocal sounds or copy any human tune, down to the last note. This species shouldn't exist, but the fact that they do, is seen as a rebellion against the capitol. Katniss' father had a special bond with them, and so did Rue, when they were together in the woods he would spent a lot time singing to them. It was said that when her father sang, all the birds, including mockingjays, fell silent because it was so beautiful (Peeta btw says the same thing happens when Katniss sings) I'm so glad that you're watching THG series. I think they did a pretty good job with these movies, but they couldn't include every single detail of course.

I love how they made all characters flawed and jaded. Turning Peeta into sort of like pain, anger and rage into a physical form is just so the opposite of how the real Peeta is a person is - pure, patient and loving. What an insidious way to break a person.

Some of the reason for Katniss mental decline at the beginning of the movie is when Johanna struck her in the head with the coil (then took the tracker out) is she was suffering from a concussion. Plus shooting the arrow also paralyzed her. But yeah, in the book you can see the effects of the concussion, she loses her train of thought or loses track of time etc. When the bombing of District 13 happened she realized that Snow was "dangling" Peeta for Katniss to focus on but if he killed him she'll finally let go and could "rest", so she figured as long as she's The Mockingjay, Snow would keep torturing Peeta. She loses it (unlike the movie she actually starts hysterically crying) and the crew realized this has basically crippled their Mockingjay. That's the reason for the rescue.

It's because it doesn't stick to the books as much as there other two films, but the 3rd book is honestly sooo boring in the first half. And I don't think what happens in the first half is unimportant so much as it's not exciting. It's full blown trauma, Katniss having panic attacks and insomnia, and then the other victors also having to deal with their PTSD. I think this movie does a fantastic job of trimming down those moments to what's actually necessary and it's done quite well. I also think a lot of people don't like that there's no love story happening because there's truly no time for that in the first half. It's very realistic and some people don't want to read a human reaction to war.

@@carlosrodriguezb I really don't see how it could have gone any other way. Movies 1 and 2 are about this really unique and interesting world with a bizarre reality show like no other. Movie 3 is about the fallout when that world breaks into rebellion. And then in the 4th one, it's just a generic action movie as the rebellion takes place. No games, no Capitol, not much of the fascinating setting the other movies had... it's just finding something for Katniss to do until the rebellion is over. And the story does an OK job with that, it's fine... but it can't possibly compete with the amazing moments in Hunger Games and Catching Fire.

It blows my mind when people say part 1 wasn’t good. Just because they were bored. Yeah it didn’t have the super fast pacing, and flashy up close and personal action like the other ones, but it was a GREAT movie about a political rebolution, and it was extreme intense and well done. The acting was AMAZING in this movie.

As much as I love the books, I think they're perfect but the movies are done really well, particularly the Mockingjay ones. The thing I love about the movies are the visuals we get of all the districts fighting. In the books, we only really get whatever Katniss is able to see or hear about. Seeing the rebellion for yourself on screen is extremely powerful. Like in the first movie you can see District 11's reaction to Rue's death whereas in the book it's more speculated. I can't tell you how emotional this movie makes me lol

Something that not many people pick up on that took me forever to realize. The scene when Katniss is using the laser pointer so the kids can laugh has a much deeper meaning. The reason her face falls and she stops is because she realized something while watching buttercup chase after the light (something he wants) and having it almost in his grasp and then ripped away. She realized she was doing to buttercup what Snow was doing to her. Snow was dangling Peeta in her face and ripping him away every time she felt she had the upper hand.

What is in the books that doesn't quite translate to the films is that Peeta is a lot more politically aware than Katniss is. Katniss is fire and runs on instincts and emotions, but Peeta knows the system, can play the game, and knows what to say and what to do to convince people to do what he wants. Katniss is the mockingjay and the symbol of the rebellion, but what District 13 didn't recognise that ultimately interfered with their Katniss plan was that her and Peeta were a team and without him there she doesn't know which direction to point in. To them he was a spare part who didn't really matter, but to Katniss he kept her functioning.

When your girls are older, I recommend reading the books with them. They are so good and, I feel, are so important for young(er) girls. I read them when I was in like 6th/7th grade and I feel like Katniss was a subconscious role model for me growing up.

I got roped into this universe when the last movie was the featured film on an overseas flight I was taking. Had never heard of the movies, but vaguely remembered my daughter reading the first Hunger Games in jr high. I always thought they were lame, Twighty-y YA books, so didn't care. Shortly after landing back in the US, I rented the first three movies, binge watched them all, re-watched the fourth, and then found audiobooks of the series.

I love Effie because in the first movie/book, she’s never “evil” she’s more like a child who doesn’t understand anything outside of her immediate sphere of influence. Then in the second book onward she starts to wise up to the true horrors of the capital and the society she benefited from.

I remember how sad and heartbreaking it was to see districts bombed and bodies laying everywhere. And Jennifer Lawrence delivering those dramatic performances, oh my goodness! Loved seeing Katniss threatening Snow. But that ending with Peeta was CHILLING. Every time we saw him, he looked even worse than before. And that was captivating to watch. Every single actor brought their A-game to the movie. Loved your reaction guys. Of course Nikki would adore and cry for Buttercup lol. Hey Steve, what's beyond awesome and intense? I still remember reading these books for the first time when they originally came out and I just fell in love with them. THEN seeing each of these movies in the theater on opening night... it was an amazing experience. I'm so happy to see that this franchise can still bring in new fans. AND yes, Buttercup does deserve an Oscar. 😂

Fringe and Chuck are 2 older tv series that have a loyal fanbase. Fringe is more sci fi drama with some comedy. Chuck spy thriller/comedy. Both have characters you will fall in love with. Newer series: Locke and Key, Sweet Tooth. Some Movie series: Divergent, The Maze Runner.

Having a loved one turned into, not dead, but hating you to death, ready to kill you. was just like a level of messed up I couldn’t process what if this happened to me; cried myself to sleep that night. Honestly the movies really tone down the atrocities you get in the books. Specifically 13:00, in the books, they don't know she's there. They decided to bomb the hospital already, without knowing Katniss could be present or that they were extra traitorous for interacting with her. The fact they were rebelling at all warranted the attacks, in the view of the Capitol. And that really doesn't come across in the movie, and in fact the movie goes out of its way to assure you that actually they really only care about Katniss, and all the other tragedies are kind of background or only relevant when they surround her. It just gives such a different feel to the whole thing. Like obviously bombing a hospital is bad no matter why someone did it, but there's also a difference in targeting a hospital because it's a hospital and will take away hope from the survivors and targeting a hospital because an enemy combatant happens to be there. There's a cruelty to the Capitol that gets kind of sanitized in these films, which honestly does the books a disservice, because they're all about the horrors of war and the pageantry of the games and the propos, while the movies end up becoming some of the spectacle that the books are warning against. It's still a really powerful scene, and her speech afterwards gives me chills every time, but this decision by the movie makers always stands out to me

I think the difference isn't that big. It was still cruel, by the end of the day. What the movies did was turn what was more a classical dystopian tale (which disempowers) into a more critical dystopian tale (which wants to empower). As someone who hasn't read the books, I hear that they're all about the horrors of war all the time, and honestly, that is the main reason I never read them. They seem very dark and depressing. The movies are still dark and depressing, just a little bit less. People mention for instance the leg injury of Peetah in the 1st movie. But even without keeping that in, the movies still transmit the cruelty of the games and capitol. I wouldn't say the books add unnecessary drama and tragedy, wars do that, the books only reflect this. But it's fine by me that the films decided not to make tragedy their top priority. Instead, they diffuse the attention so it's not only on the horrors of war, but also on people's agency and ability for resistance, on the "beauty" (however tragic) that comes out of these situations. Makes it a more hopeful and powerful story, and although that may be a slightly different take on war from the book, we can't say it's an entirely untrue one.

I love the scenes with the people from the districts fighting back. I still remember sitting in the movie theater and watching them run up the trees like that. When one of them yelled “if we burn, you burn with us!” before dropping the bombs… chills. I also loved the part where they are carrying the explosives to the entrance of the water plant. They keep getting gunned down but the people behind them are already prepared to take over to achieve their mission no matter what. It’s beautiful.

I’m sure someone has mentioned this already but I absolutely LOVE how Jennifer portrays katniss’ emotions! I love how she acts calm but you can see in her eyes that she is scared of every movement and then when something happens (i.e. when snow reveals he know everyone is in the capitol) she completely explotes in panic. That’s so good and so accurate keeping in mind that she’s still a teenager trying to lead a war.

The Dam scene always hits so hard and how the one voice turns into a singing mass of people marching to their deaths because either they will die by bullets or by the flood is soo powerful. Although those Peacekeepers are evil guys, I somehow vibe with them...

When I read the series before the movies came out,the part that got me the most was peeta hurting Katniss. My vision literally blurred and I almost had a panic attack. I had to calm myself down to continue reading. Great series. 👍
