This is one of my favourite classic episodes... I'd love Time Team to do more Viking Era investigations.

Another fabulous episode of Time Team. Now to go find some more. I miss Mick. Hopefully he is watching from somewhere, applauding the new generation of archeologists who I love watching videos of.

Amazing that Island used to have trees. Grazing has kept it barren for a long time. 🌲🙁

I positively love the excavation being done in what is more or less,real time. Though im sure there is creative editing to maintain a stimulating flow. Please keep up this series,it is really, really good.

Why the Shetlands? The Norse thought in terms of sea-roads. Islands have value in their own right, but also as harbours, ship resupply and repair bases, and stops on the way onwards, whether for trade, raiding, or exploring. Orkneys - Shetlands - Svalbard - Hebrides - Faroes - Iceland, and onwards in whatever direction….

Valhalla was NOT the viking heaven. It was only one of many halls one could be in after death. Valhalla was only for warriors who died in battle. And only the dead that Freya didn't choose herself. If the "giant" were a sailor who died of natural causes, he probably would have gone to Hel's hall. Where his afterlife would've continued much like his life in this side.

Yes, except that brooch belonged to a woman. She was well off, probably the mistress of the farm, maybe a leader in the settlement. As you say, she probably was destined for Hel's realm.

It all gets backfilled Monday. Service provided by Time Team. The Academics stop work Sunday night and then a crew with heavy equipment shoves the spoil back in the trenches and re-lay the turf. I've heard they do a pretty good job, too. Although, if the property owner's plans were to excavate anyway (say for a new building addition) it may be that the restoration process could be forgone. Then the Academics continue in the labs and conservators do their magic. Later, the reports are published in peer-reviewed journals. British Heritage (or their inheritors), local interest groups, stakeholders (town councils, property owners, etc.) can develop plans to protect what remains for the future, develop community use and involvement, publicize interpretation for the public which could lead to increased tourism, etc.

Danes were mentioned several times, Norway only once at the end. But Shetland used to belong to Norway, or what? Danes preferred England.
@BamberdittoPingpong Жыл бұрын
The Scottish Isles were settled by Norwegians yeah. In the British Isles, Norwegians settled in the Scottish Isles, northern parts of the Highlands, Ireland, Man, and Northern England (Cumbria and Northumbria). He said Denmark because that’s where he had seen boat graves, but the woman used Norway as an example when showing the pictures and discussing why the Norse migrated to Shetland. Shetland along with other islands was annexed into Norway by Harald Fairhair in 875

YEH NORWEGIAN VIKINGS ARE KNOWN TO BE THE ONE THAT WAS THE MOST TRAVEL AND ALSO THE MOST VICIOUS AMONG THEIR BROTHERS THE DANES AND THE SWEDES. MOST OF THEM PREFER THE COLD WINDY LAND OF SCOTLAND AND ICELAND. DANES ARE MORE CIVILIZED AMONG THEM I THINK AND PREFER MORE FERTILE AND SETTLED LAND OF ENGLAND. THE SWEDES ARE THE LAZY ONE AND ONLY VENTURE TO THE EAST AND BECAME THE RUSSIAN ELITE LATER XD.
