What do you mean refused to teach you how to? He HAS to teach you networking and memory allocation, that's the basis of computer sciences. Boom, that's 99% of the technical aspect of hacking for you. It's kinda like a surgeon in the sense that a surgeon has the knowledge of what parts of the body bleeds a lot and can cause hart attack and shit technically he could use that knowledge to do f'ed shit but he uses it to save lives. He was taught it during med school. Same shit: we know how to listen to network communications, scan for open ports, enter into machines and steal files from them. We know this because we've been taught networking and whatever programming language's standard library. Like sure there are certain things you don't necessarily learn until you look for them or are doing specific training (like embedded programming e.g: robotics, military, etc. and that's how you know how to exploit the platform itself) but that's ridiculous to even bring up.

Not only that, but by making money off of information alone it wouldve been a lot harder for them to get caught in the first place. What really gave them away was leaking any game they had early access to, that would instantly trigger a network investigation in whatever company the leak came from. That or trying to make money off of anything they stole. Easy to get caught selling stolen property/goods, but information? Insider traders dream.
