I think they kinda feared the possibility of them having the potential to have a much more scarier design… They may have had a hint. But they likely didn’t wanna take the chance of waiting so they made countless projects in a hurry… Any project, concept, was in their eyes… Another potential competitor to any of the IS series tanks

This design combines many good ideas - even by todays standards. A cast hull in this shape would be a lot harder to penetrate due to its lack of straight edges. It would blend better into the landscape - unlike any box-shaped tank and, most probably, even provide a low radar signature. 180° turret travel is IMHO sufficient in most cases, especially considering the typical thin rear armour of most tanks. Gun elevation+depression are very good, especially for a design featuring a low-mounted turret like this. The beetle-wing escape hatch could be done with an explosive blow-away type feature for emergency escape. Of course, hydraulic drive and rockets instead of shells have its limits and are a dead end. But I like most of the rest, really good out-of-the-box thinking!!

some good, new ideas, but a lot of really dumb, stupid ones: petrol engine ?? They learn nothing from the Sherman aka "Ronson" on ww2 ?? Autonomy - crap, power ratio - again crap, guns - another dumb idea - is hard to fit ONE good, big gun in a conventional turret - but to fit there two of them, was really silly. The guns will become slow as hell if the turret rotate more, and at high elevation - 2 rounds / minute ?? That is horrible. And the range was hilarious short - wtf, a hand weapon could fire at longer range ! 500 yards ?? That is what, some 450m ?? No wonder they dropped the design, too many stupid ideas...

@@mirandela777 The US tanks of the 50ies all used petrol engines originally. They changed later to Diesel for fuel economy reasons. If you are referring to the 120 miles as "autonomy", that was seem adequate for a heavy tank, certainly better than the M103 at the time. 645 HP for a 45 ton(short ton,I suppose) tank, that's 14.33 HP/ short ton. Comparing it to the M103's 12.6 HP/short ton, that's pretty good. In metric,the Rheem "The Hunter's" power to weight ratio would be 15.8 HP/t, which is better value than the opposing side's heavy tank, the T-10M's 14,42 HP/t. Also, Shermans tend to catch fire easier(until the introduction of wet stowage) because of their ammunition placement. The infamous Tiger has a similar ammunition placement and if their armour was penetrated and hit one of the ammo stowage above the tracks,the result was a destroyed tank as well. If a tank needs one large conventional gun, to provide good elevation and depression values, the turret ring must be large as well. That means the top of the hull must be wide enough. That usually means a large hull, etc, etc, so we end up with a large tank with a large turret, like the M103. A 'rocket gun' has less recoil than a conventional gun,therefore needs a smaller turret ring,therefore you can make a smaller hull,therefore the result can be a smaller tank. About the 500 yards range, watch the video again. They provided data about *accuracy* for 500 yards. This doesn't mean that the rocket can go only 500 yards. However, this range is still insufficient. And I suspect the rocket guns were far from accurate at 2000 yards.

The rate of fire is 120rpm,only dropping to 2rpm per gun (4rpm) at max depression. This is presumably average rate of fire, because there is no reason the magazines would be affected by turret position. Range 500 yards is the accurate combat range, the accurate combat range of most rifles is considered to be ~500yards, so no handguns do not have longer range. As for not being enough, it would be perfectly fine in urban or jungle/forrest terrain. And one doesn't really want or need heavy tanks in open terrain, where their slower speed would actually be noticeable. Not what the Americans wanted, limited in use, but not terriable either. Certainly not as bad as you are making it out to be.

Rheem in Australia were the inventor of the truck chassis mounted concrete agitator, the delivered readymix concrete truck. The first building, worldwide, to be constructed using concrete mixed offsite was The Parliament House building in Canberra in 1928.

I'm not surprised Rheem didn't work with you. They're an...odd company. They were a client at a past job and they were difficult to work with. Different divisions not only don't talk to each other, but distrusted the other and seem to be in open conflict - which was the only thing they were open about. I'm surprised a company pulled so hard in so many directions has survived.

I'm quite impressed at the technical aspects of the silica armour. It appears that Rheem intend to incorporate the armour package during the casting process, I can't think of how they'd go about it.

Ah hell....As an old, tired, wore out M60A1 and First Edition M1 Abrams kind of Mech Infantry and Armored Cav tanker....I think I would have been much, much happier with either an up gunned, up armored, and diesel powered "Hetzer"....Which the "Hunter" clearly mimicked after a fashion. Or God help me, an M60A2 "Starship".

I knew from my industrial tech research that Rheem had their fingers in many things, but I was not aware of their involvement in the US Oscillator series - IIRC, I had photographed one of them rather extensively in front of the Detroit Artillery Armory in the early 1980s ... Makes me wonder how their decision loop brought them to the HVAC and water heaters we know them for now ...

This Tank is used in the Ice Crusade expansion pack for Cuban Missile Crisis: The Aftermath along side the MBT-70 (Which shoots rockets instead of shells) and the OBJ-279. The Hunter does have a strange and pretty neat design. Also many other prototypes are used The Aftermath and Ice Crusade along side Modern Tanks as cheat units.

I imagine the slow reload rate had to do with the loader location vs where the ammunition had to be positioned when rotated.

i pondered this, and as said it had clips, so it could be that once the clips ar empty it drops to the lower rate of fire, but they didnt add that in? however thats speculation, possibl its the ejection mecanism? - its interestign but sadly rheem didnt go into details

@@armouredarchives8867 I was thinking more that the clips were 90 degrees from where they would be when facing straight forward. The motion would require a lot more manipulation of the rounds. Also, to reload the gun on the far side of the gunner, you would need to get past the gunner. That said, I would assume in practice, they wouldn't attempt to reload the gun when rotated 90 degrees.

That's clearly the best tank design that ever was, and it will certainly be revised at some point. I would change the hydraulic motors for pneumatic, and return the air (compressed and piped from engine exhaust) through "liquid armor" side fuel tanks though. Some light anti-aircraft, guided missiles are hitting mach 2-4 to replace those old recoilless rocket rippers in the design (using ruskie 57E6 for example, with 20KM range), which makes an AT variant of the same, out of dual barrels of a 2-tank wing able to wipe out an entire platoon of mechanized infantry in a flash, and still have lots of machineguns for close-in discouragement. The logo, cast on the surface, would likely be a good "field up-armor" feature, if it were a honeycomb design that let an expeditionary force fill the cells with dirt, metal scrap, and camouflaging materials.

That makes entirely too much sense. I was wondering how those big magazines would follow the barrels through elevation and depression, but the simple answer is: "They don't." I guess there just isn't enough space. Shame, that.

I would hazard a guess on the rate of fire and suggest that the magazine and/or extraction system was fixed in some way and the guns had to return to a extraction position after firing. It would be the simplest reason, and would also coincide with the simplest engineering solution to have an automatic magazine feed & auto ejection system. Couple it with the US penchant of the period 1950-1980 for hydraulic systems rather than electrical and that'll be why it's slow and limited ROF across some arcs/elevations?

Rheem is a household name in Australia. Biggest on hot water systems. My hot water system died . In looking for a new one . I purchased a solar solarhart one . Solarhart was a pioneering Solar power company. It was taken over by Rheem . The solarhart hot water system I purchased was of a rugged design that has been around for 40 years . So the are these same design solar hot water systems still serviceable after 40 years . My power bill use to be 120 dollars a month . Now down to $20 / month . I do not use air conditioning. Nor do I have a pool . All my ceiling fans are going all the time . So my hot water power use , use to be my biggest expense . Thank you Solarhart and Rheem .

Dividing the gun put too much weight on the ammo, and not enough weight down range. They could have even sacrificed more traverse to upsize the gun. Lots of good ideas among the many ideas at play, here.

Only one engine, the rest are hydraulic motors. Probably still a pain in the ass, but less so than so many engines. (Yes, I know, I'm being frustratingly pedantic, but engines and motors are different, despite often being used interchangeably in everyday speech)

It really does seem like the hunter couldve been at least somewhat successful. Minus the 105 rocket guns range and accuracy and the loading issues at extreme angles, the tank itself seems like a good concept. Too bad the army did have a problem with not taking "untried" tech, not like they couldnt just fix or adjust designs as they went along and got better anyways

I lived in Richmond about 1.5 miles from Rheem Manufacturing. You could see a water tower with the company name on it. This would be from 1958 until somewhere in the late 80's.

Would still be pretty obsolete. As we saw with the "S-Tank" Strv-103 and the Soviet prototype Objekt 490 there isn't much room for high-survivability tank-hunting MBTs in the 21st century. If I had to wager the future is in high mobility tanks with intelligence networking and electronic warfare capabilities. Guns will probably go up to 130/140/152mm calibres as composite armour and ERA technology continues to develop, and we're likely to see integrated mini drones and cruise missiles incorporated into tank fleets. I don't see sniper tanks of this type at least being particularly successful, but I could be wrong. Maybe a future conflict on the steppes of China and Mongolia could see a resurgence in the need for long-range tank destroying. Who knows.

My first impression of this AFV was positive however my second glance away from the profile was the tracks with the low profile it has negated the arc of fire to perhaps 10 to 15-degrees whereas present day design give both secondary and main armaments a 360-degree arc of fire. e. that date back to 1915 which makes it highly questionable for a number of practical reasons. learly excellent feature being it's low profile from a protection standpoint but this limits the armaments, both main and secondary arc of fire unlike tank and the spotter's view particularly in uneven terrain. Today's designs means the armaments have 360-degrees albeit some cannot fire their main armaments when sideways on consequently mobility is an absolute must.

Spg's dint need the same arc of fire that MBT's need. This tank would be used similar to jagdpanthers, or hetzers or jagdpanzers. They would sit in an ambush position and then fire upon the enemy.

Its amazing how the German Stugs concept carried on , the twin Gun looks good but I think it would be reduced to a single unit but bigger , I liked the curved Hull idea as well.. interesting history on Rheem ..great vid as always .

@@teeanahera8949 it the 1950s we shall call them rocket guns. but seeing as how chemical effect rounds increase in performance as you increase their diameter it might have made sense to mount a single 150-250mm launcher and then work on projectile range and accuracy. With todays technology a concept like the hunter could be a viable option even if it would be stupidly expensive.
