Ocho Rios is not just the hotels and tourist strip. There are the places where ordinary Jamaicans live and A LOT goes on there in those communities. Do not confine yourself to the tourist areas. Visit schools, churches (especially old colonial ones), restaurants where the ordinary folk eat. Concerts, country fairs, parties, nine nights, unique Jamaican funerals with funeral/marching bands and rum and food are in those vibrant communities. We are far from 'dead' without the cruise ships!

It's safer to stay in the tourist area, no need to delude yourself and these tourists into going in the areas where normal citizens live and then they get robbed etc. They should stay where it is safer.

Jamaican street and beach hustlers work in the very fine gray area between a very aggressive sales style and an actual mugging. It's a double edged thing. I get where it's hard to make a living there and part of me kind of admits the sense of enterprise, but at the same time it's exhausting. A lot of people won't even leave the resort grounds anymore for that reason.
@chestercopperpot5277 Жыл бұрын
It turns people off from possibly visiting for a first time or visiting again. They don't want to listen to a sales pitch their whole vacation. They want to relax and unwind.

The clubs, parties, and dance that keep on fisherman ( I remember the rest of the name) but just being in Jamaica, chilling on the beach, going for a walk under the sky, it truly amazing. There is definitely lots to do in Ochi.. so unsure why you thought there wasn’t. There are so many places to eat and yes there are public beach’s you can also use you just got to know where to go.. as you’ve never been there before you wouldn’t know unless you knew someone in Jamaica. You had the car you literally could have driven about 30 mins out of the town to sharkies seafood restaurant or plantation smokehouse.. there is also a place called puertoseco beach, it’s stunning!! There is also a jerk place opposite green grotto caves, and so many places to visit.. it may be better to meet some jamaicans who can show you around or do some research before going next time to give you the best of the place 🙌🏽🙌🏽

Hi @ TravelwithChris, I have been watching your videos on your visit to Jamaica. I love that you explore the community and meet the people. Thank you for visiting my homeland and the Garden Parish. For your information, Ocho Rios never had private beaches when I was growing up. Island Village was built to attract tourist and not necessarily for the local community. Tourism is important to the island. My grandfather and many of his peers were fisherman on that beach for many years. It is called Fisherman's Beach. You could buy fresh fish daily. I loved spending time with my father and granddad on that beach. They are both gone now. I hope you get to visit the craft market in Ocho Rios. As we love to say in Jamaica... One Love Chris! Technically, the original Jamaicans (Arawaks) were Indian similar to Native American in the states. Jamaica is literally out of many one people.
This is not true i'd suggest you do research before stating false information online. The Arawak are not to be confused with South Indians or Indians of India; Arawaks are indigenous Native American peoples ( a complete different ethnicity no genetic similiarities). Many Jamaicans trace their ancestry back to the Arawak since there was mixing with the maroons during slavery.

As a Jamaican, if you see Ocean or river swim. Nobody’s gonna say anything to you unless you ask questions and act like a visitor they are gonna take advantage, no such rules exist about oceans or lakes. Don’t need to purchase anything, only hotels / resorts with private gated area do that but once you have hotel ticket etc you have access to the full resort / hotel ocean that’s on the property, can’t just walk to a resort / hotel and expect to swim. And as far as I could tell you were not on a resort property or hotel. Again if I’m not wrong there’s only 2 or 3 BIG resorts / hotels that even own any pool or ocean.

The Netherlands isn't extremely cold. It xan be during winter, but can also hit 30°C in summer.

That is why tourists don't walk in Ocho Rios as much anymore, too much harrassment. That's Patrick guy needs to chill.

I think I learned from your video to take a camera with me when I go to the Indian shops. I am American married to a Jamaican and white so they give even me prices way more than they gave you. . . . probably 4000 for the grandma bag and 1000 each for the magnets!! Also, my life is with the poorer people of Jamaica. The Indian stores pay the tour buses to take the people to their shops and tell them that there is no place to park at the local craft dealers. Local craft dealers are hurting!!!!!! There is no way they make enough to pay tour buses per head to drop tourists at their stalls.Also you mentioned action in Ochi - it is on the other end of the town from the tourist area where the ships come in!!!!!

I stayed in a Jewell resort in Ochos Rios. It was ok except that I got locked in the washroom for 15 minutes because there was a defect in the lock that refused to open. Maintenance was call in to finally open the door.
