The Hype & Disappointment of AEW Fight Forever

The big red flag for me and why I never bought the game was the hype. The game was described by various people as a spiritual successor to No Mercy AND Here Comes the Pain, which to me are very different games. It’s like fans invested all their hopes and dreams into the game without ever playing it, so that when it was finally released, and was in fact a closer spiritual successor to Mario Party and Fortnite, it had no chance of living up to expectations.

A wrestling game in this day and age needs only three things: 1. A good creation suite 2. A plethora of match types 3. A fair amount of modes with a career/season mode & a sandbox/GM mode being musts. AEW Fight Forever is literally just RTE & Exhibition.

But the lack of content and the unnecessary mini games (those DAMN mini games) really took away the experience. I was looking forward to Stadium Stampede, but they ruined that too by making it online only.

I was hoping for this game to be good because competition in wrestling is a great thing (Monday night wars) but this game simply doesn’t offer anything at all.. and stadium stampede is horrible. Yeah personally I don't think any sports game at all should be charging AAA prices (it's like $80 here in Canada). WWE2K or Madden costing the same as RDR, Starfield, GTA, etc is no more than a scam plain and simple. These should all be $40-$50 games, basically half the price of a AAA title Cyberpunk or such. I don't own AEW but from what I've seen and heard about it, $60 USD is way too high for this. This feels like a $20-$30 game.

Just picked it up on sale. Lack of match types, and only a couple 4 player couch co op matches really hurts the game. Also the lack of a community creator so you can upload and download characters. Also the pc version using easy anti-cheat completely kills modding.

It really only killed modding for a couple weeks. I was playing around with mods that added the ROH and PWG Arenas, Double Rings, Steel Cage, Hell In A Cell, WWE 2k characters and 3x more health to everyone. Cheat codes were a little more tricky but they worked too

I’ve had this game since launch. It feels like a beta test. Saw an interview with the guy that wrote road to elite. He was literally one guy and he did the motion capture himself. He only had 10 months of development time, I feel like the entire game was like this. It all screams rushed out the door. If feels like a beta test. This game didn’t have a clear roadmap or any real idea of what it wanted to be. No Mercy came out 20 years ago and had more features and more thought behind it. All they really had to do was make No Mercy, updated with an AEW roster and somehow they fucked it up. Wait a year, Ultra Pro Wrestling is due out and seems to be an actual successor to the AKI games not whatever FF is supposed to be.

At launch they kept defending the lackluster game, saying it will get yearly updates and the added dlc will make the game great. I still really enjoy the game and if only they would add a lot more impactful things like more match types, and more caw options and match options like being able to put no dq on. Cross play would most definitely help more players connect online for the limited people that support currently. I love the game mechanics and gameplay. I truly hope things turn around for this game. I want to continue to support and stream but like you say. Only time will tell.

I remember AEW Stans on Twitter were saying this is not only gonna be game of the year, but outsell 2k23. That shit couldn't even outsell WWE 2k19. This game was a massive flop. I've never played a game in the modern era that is this limited. Keep in mind this game cost $50-60 on launch. The lack of character customisation is damn near laughable. In the 2k series you can legit customize everyone's thread in the roster for almost 12 years. In FF you can't even custom anyone's attire. The first thing they have to do is give us every match type in RTE including but not limited to the coffin match, gauntlet match, handicap tag and handicap no tag match, and 4 person ladder matches both 4 way and tag. Add a cage match with interactive walls like Def Jam FFNY has. You have the architect of that game in Geta. Use him. Backstages and TKOs. Their Battle Royal mode has BOTH of these things- put it in the main game They need to allow use to pick match rules prior to a match like No Mercy did: Time Limit: 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 mins Countout: 10counts, 20counts, Hardcore (Falls Count Anywhere,) No Count Pin: Yes/No Submission: Y/N TKO: Y/N Rope Break: Y/N DQ: Y/N Bloodshed: Yes, First Blood, No Interference: Y/N Tag Help Time: 5secs, 10secs, 20secs,30secs,60secs, No Tag (Texas Tornado) Bleeding without weapons, interference. Long match options with health recovery LIKE THE AKI GAMES had. Matches are FAR TOO SHORT without them. I love the gameplay. That's the draw to AEW Fight Forever at this point. It plays like I remember of my favorite wrestling games. My main grievance is the poor creation suite, which I can spend half the time on a wrestling game just creating stuff. It reduces the replayability so much. Now I could've treated this game like WCW/NWO Revenge, (which had no actual CAW) but this game was released with a seriously limited and outdated roster. I played Revenge back in the day practically everyday until Wrestlemania 2000 came out because the roster was up to date and stacked *minus Ric Flair. There's too many big names missing that have been in AEW for a while and the DLC packs are over priced for just 2 characters per pack, especially considering they've been in AEW long enough that they should've already been in the game. It's just so disappointing because you can just feel how good this game could've been.

I never understood all the hype from the beginning. To me the game looked from the outset to be a 5/10, maybe 6/10 type game, I.e. fun enough to play for a good amount of time and come back to every once in a while but not enough content to keep you hooked and coming back for more and that's exactly what it looks to have turned out to be even though I haven't haven't played it myself. The wrestling game I'm personally looking forward to the most and have been for a while is The Wrestling Code which seems to have a bunch of potential to be a great wrestling game with a lot of customisation options in terms of match creation and a promising online mode. I appreciate the AEW game is going to be added to with future updates but when you start out with a lot of limitations in terms of match types, customisation etc and that carries on for long enough, by the time you have added all the features, almost nobody will care and that is what this AEW game has suffered from. This isn't to say the gameplay isn't fun or potentially the story modes but the reason I haven't bought it so far is for the reasons I've mentioned i.e. lack of customisation both for the creation options as well as a match creator and the lack of features in general to keep more interested. I may well pick it up when it's around £20 to potentially £30 but that's about as much as I'm willing to spend on this game especially in its current form.

I knew what it was when my friend showed me one of the updated gameplay showcase's and we realized the game was reusing alot of animations that 2k had. Feels like they really should have done more of their own thing. It's similar...too similar to Yikes recent style rather than the AKI style. Day of reckoning for example felt very different from svr.

The reversals you see "not registering" aren't due to broken reversals... that's actually due to lag spikes in the netcode when it comes to the "reversal guide visual circle" kicking in. Jeez No Mercy was the worst of all of those games. Idk why people like that game that much. It had so many issues and was clearly rushed at the end of the N64s life. It was a knock-off of the Virtual Pro Wrestling games which were far superior to anything we got in the states. Specific grunts, AI modification, realistic arenas, a highly customizable roster with alot of wrestlers, tons of modes and secrets and options.... really. No Mercy was garbage. WrestleMania 2000 was... okay... some questionable design choices here and there and some bad looking designs and a really bleak career mode but... atleast there wasn't the glitches No Mercy had; CAWs would prioritize their TURNBUCKLE Special, since that's their default setting, a setting that is in a menu that was... removed... so... you can't change it. They do a regular move instead of a special move in the combination moves like Sidewalk Slam w Submission. So instead of slamming someone and locking in the Sharpshooter, Bret Hart slams someone and gives them the headbutt to the groin, a regular move. And that's the same for ALL of the combination moves where a special is selectable for the position. No Mercy also had very specific storylines that, while ripped right from the TV, made no sense unless you chose the correct path with the correct wrestler... instead of just making it, character specific... thus you'll see Stone Cold acting like the Rock or Mankind acting like Triple H. Etc.

I love the gameplay but I am mostly done with it (that is the case with many wrestling games with me, I drop them quickly hehe). But since AEW FF has little to do, I felt like I was done after 10-15 hours and I extended that a bit. I bought 2K22 around the sme time and I am 20 hours in and I am just tsting and feeling on what I have available to do there. I do not care about online play either. if you are able to get the game for less that $40 like I did for the Elite version, it is worth. But not at full price. You call tell Yukes was given little budget for this and it shows.

I had a lot of hope for this game and kept waiting for a release date only to find delay after delay. I thought to myself it was better for the game to be delayed if it resulted in a quality product.... but that's not the case at all It's sad that no other Fed can release a game on par to compete with 2k because they set the bar so low. The 2k rosters and/or attires are outdated by the time the game comes out. Cora Jade was already a heel when 2k23 came out and in game she has her baby face gimmick. Given that this was being built from the ground up, I knew full well this was never gonna live up to expectations. I've learned this from wrestling games of the past, and knew Fight Forever would be no different. Remember that games like No Mercy, and HCTP had to built on the foundation of other games before them. No way Fight Forever was ever gonna live up to that standard its first go round.

Now that the summer is over, and it’s been a few months now, I can say that while Fight Forever isn’t one of the greatest games ever right now, it isn’t one of the worst games as well. I truly think with enough support and work by Yuke’s, and patience with fans, this game after some time, can easily be one of the greatest of all time, as it has that classic AKI feel, and the gameplay at least for me, is super fun, and with enough gameplay improvements and additions, in terms of roster, modes, and match types, this can one day be right up there with No Mercy, but we just need to patient. I know many gave up already, but I’m staying, no matter what. Here’s hoping this game can bounce back🤞🙏.

Man way to keep fans patient is to give updates and not keep them in the dark. It’s basic customer service when an issue happens and you tell people there will be something at a certain date don’t just let the date pass leaving everyone in the dark just to give them a different date to look out for. Yukes is a developer with years of experience and they take 3 years to give us a barebones game which only saving grace to people is the gameplay and nothing else
