Hyundai has fought a stigma in the United States since coming here in the mid-1980s. In other parts of the world, it faces no such hurdles, but the way it was marketed in the US has given it a fair amount to overcome as it tries to move upmarket. Much of this is Hyundai’s own doing.
This car, the Equus, was meant to begin erasing those perceptions. Much like the Lexus LS that debuted here in 1990, the Equus was an out-of-nowhere upstart that would bring the game not only to the LS sedan, but even top dogs Mercedes-Benz and BMW. This was ambitious, to say the least - not even Cadillac or Lincoln have tried to build cars at this price point for many years, and they still enjoy a strong upmarket reputation in the US.
Did it succeed? Sort of.
Full review and test drive if a 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate by Billof Curious Cars. Vehicle will be for sale soon on Cars and Bids by Andrew, a private owner.

Agree with your appreciation of Bill! I'll be 59 in a month and except for not having the internet at our fingertips back then life was better & easier in the 1980's & 1990's. Remember receiving BOTH Quarterly and Annual BONUSES? Unless where I worked was on the ropes I'd get around $4,000/Qtr and $7 or $8 annually, and it was ON TOP OF our normal salary. The "kids" reading this won't understand this one either, but before the shysters talked you into funding your own retirement with 401K's there was something called a *PENSION!!! EVERY YEAR WITHOUT FAIL my employer would put $12,000 to $15,000 into it.* Yes, employers funded your retirement. And without 24/7 smartphones taking away all our privacy & free time we actually maintained a work/life balance. Yes... things were pretty good in the '80s & '90s. P.S. All those dollar amounts are *NOT* CONVERTED into 2021 numbers!

We got Hyundai cars in Canada a few years earlier than the USA, 1984, with the introduction of the Pony (hatchback) and Stellar (sedan), both RWD. The first Hyundai in the USA was the Excel which was FWD. I have a 1986 Hyundai Pony 4DR hatchback. Very basic car with manual everything: locks, steering, brakes, windows, seats, CHOKE, points ignition, and NO catalytic converter. It was so early for Hyundai it was equipped with Mitsubishi 4G32 1.6L 4 cyl and 5 speed manual transmission. The chassis was based on the European Ford Cortina.

Could call these cars “The Headless Horseman” I always liked the hood ornament with a lady on her back holding her head and legs up in a V as she holds a figure 8 between her legs. Great for that car with a V8 engine. I saw the thing in the 1980’s and thought then it was a 50’s ornament. The guy at the car show wanted $500 and that was a lot then. I didn’t but should have bought it!

This man is an absolute legend! His characterization of our Florida "sweat swamp" weather is spot on. As to the car, I remember the day my dad came home and drug my mother and I to the Hyundai dealership saying he was gonna buy one of these. On the way over, he kept going on and on, saying he was gonna save so much money and yada yada. We get there, and I thought the grill and weird logo were the gaudiest looking things I had ever seen. However, it wasn't until the test drive when the whole car started vibrating that he finally realized that this car's build quality just wasn't up to snuff. Went to the Lexus dealer and bought an LS. Still has it to this day.

Hyundai and Kia are making cars that are on par with Toyota with an exception of their Theta engine series and teething problems with their DSG trans (What DSG isn't a unreliable turd?). That Theta engine is a complete shame when put in Optimas and Sonatas, ruins a very good car. I'll also add, I have seen a couple early 00's Sonatas, a Sorrento, and a a couple early 00's Elantras with 300K. I don't know how reliable those 300K miles were, but I've seen them on marketplace and Craigslist. Not a Kia or Hyundai guy, but I give them credit for the strides they've made since the sack of shit 1980's Hyundai Pony they came into the market with for example.

Dear Sir, I have been watching your segments for quite some time now. I consider my self a car guy. I don’t own a classic. I was born in the early’50’s and from an early age I could identify American cars , up until the late sixties. I think cars lost most of their character. Your knowledge of the industry is fascinating. I also enjoy your sense of humor. I honestly laugh out loud. The comment you made about surname pronunciations was hilarious. I have always thought the same thing. Thank you for your informative and entertaining presentation. Best wishes Mark

Bill, Thanks for the great video. You are the classic automotive comedian! I was LOL so many times during this great piece of footage. I have to make it to Naples and take you out to lunch. We will have to go somewhere though where the tables are wide and deep in the case you make me LOL and I spit up my food on you.....LOL.

The Hyundai Equus had a very short 5 year run in America, but it was actually in production for 17 years. So it had a very long run before they discontinued it. But people have to remember just because an automaker discontinues a vehicle due to low sales doesn't mean it was a bad car mechanically or otherwise. All that means is either buyers started to lose interest, it didn't take off in sales as they hoped it would, or the automaker was ready to move on to something new. And that applies to all automakers. But people have to stop buying into just because they go online and hear someone bad mouth a car that means it's a bad car to buy. There are automakers like BMW and Land Rover who continue to make brand new cars with a whole list of "brand new" mechanical problems just as their previous generations had. But millions of people continue to go out and buy those cars (new or used) without question knowing the negative history of the automaker. Point is give the Eqqus a break. Cause it's nice separate yourself from the group and drive a big luxury car that not everyone else has out on the road, like an old beat up Lexus LS, an s-class or a broken down on the side of the road 7 series.

Mazel Tov on 100k Bill! "...then on comes bumper music from The Today Show." You have an impressive inner wellspring of hilarious asides, as well as an uncanny ability to humourously string them all together. Cheers

my moms first Hyundai was a 2003 Silver/gray Elantra then we traded that for a 2005 Sonata LX she currently drives a black 2013 Azera GL as for this being a Korean attempt at a Cadillac it fell short majorly my least favorite Caddy I've ever been in was A CTS which was the touring Sedan version of the less than popular Catera in the years it was sold sold 95,000

Buick is garbage. No one copies a faux cheap luxury old school brand. Buick has copied many other European brands since the 90s. Buick is lucky that the Chinese consumers like the brand. Buick is on life support in the US.

Leave it to Bill: "The sport button. I pressed that and tried to do sporty things, but nothing sporty happened." "How am I supposed to be a wealthy Korean banker without supported thighs?" Of all the times Bill has mentioned places to stash guns in cars, this time it gets real because Andrew has stepped up his game, with the road rage handler.
