It's easy to forget that both Intel Skylake and Kaby Lake processors supported DDR3L memory, a low voltage version of DDR3. Today we're seeing what the I7 6700 can really do when paired with an RTX 3060 Ti, as well as 1600MHz DDR3.

I had the platform's slightly younger sibling (7700 on ddr4) up until October of 22... It definitely still packs a powerful punch, but being able to double the amount of power on hand with more recent hardware definitely shows how much has changed in little time.

truth is the technology was always there, Intel just held off >4 cores from consumer priced CPU's since they had no competition, and PS4/Xbone used old FX-based CPUs which were anemic 4 cores should have been obsolete ages ago

Great video. Intel definitely spent several years basically resting on their laurels and not really doing much beyond incremental updates. AMD really forced them to try again. This is why when I upgraded from an Ivy Bridge Xeon system I skipped everything all the way up to an 8th gen CPU.

Yeah AMD failing with FX was such a bad time as it let intel just get away with being so lazy & the knock on effect of having so many problems with 10nm for desktop because it was just raining $$$, The changes AMD made to get back to being competetive & now intel also so they are now both needing to advance every generation has been a real positve for consumers.

Awesome video as usual! It's quite funny that due to the stagnation of Intel on 14nm, pretty much all the generations from 6th up to 10th were a derivative of skylake (just more cores/threads and cache plus clock speed scaling higher). So, theoretically even the 10th gen could support DDR3 memory if Intel opted to do so, but obviously they probably have changed the memory controller, probably from 8th gen.

Funny this, I have a 6700k and it was my daily driver for a while. 32GB of DDR4 3200 CL16. At the same time I got an i5 6200U laptop and was shocked when I realized it used DDR3L 1600 memory. I remember looking it up to be sure. And sure enough, Skylake was designed with a dual memory controller. The performance of my 4.8 Ghz All core OC on my 6700k and the G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 3200 CL16 along with a 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD as OS and a few 500 GB SATA SSDs as game storage, I saw better performance in ALL the games you've shown here. At the time, and this was before the 5.1 update, I was playing Fortnite in 4k 120. I also had a 25% or more frame increase in the games you showcased here. I started with a GTX 1080 in that rig and ended with an RTX 3070. However while in unreal 4, the GTX 1080 got me 4K 120 in Fornite as well, for reference. It was Epic VIew and Textures, High Effects and Medium Post. TAA and Native 4K res (3840 x 2160p). It was on an Asus Z170 Deluxe motherboard.

My rig is 8 years old, runs Windows 10, and came with Windows 8, but runs most games quite well, It is an HP Envy system with an Intel i7-4770 with 16 GB of DDR3 - 1600 in 4 slots and an Nvidia 1060 6GB card and a 2TB HDD "did arrive with what sounded like a very good graphics card" an Nvidia 1070 but turned out to be one of those OEM cards and had one and a half GB of Ram so a couple of cards later, I have renewed the HDD that failed last year but still enjoy a game or two, not spending any money on any of the latest releases I don't think my PC is up to that challenge.

Skylake does perform a bit better with DDR4 ...especially with higher speed, such as 3000 MHz (only possible on a Z board). Basic DDR4-2133 cl.15 should gain up to 10% performance vs Basic 1600 MHz cl.11. Many modern games utilize RAM bandwidth. If using DDR3-1600, the i7-6700 will perform just about the same, as the Haswell i7-4770/4790 with the same memory.

I bought the 6700k in 2016. And that cpu was a beast. The fact it still play games realy well, and that it took Ryzen 3 generations to catch up to it in gaming performance is the proof. You need to test that cpu with ddr4. I'm sure that lddr3 memory is limiting the cpu. I had 16gigs from the start, later upgraded to 32. I was playing Half Life Alyx with my 6700k and gtx 1080ti combo, while streaming it to my facebook using just my videocard to encode it. And it ran flawlessly. Altho i no longer own it, that rig is still kicking ass in the hands of it's current owner. Just get that ddr4 memory and you'll see how this one can do better too.

what makes you think ryzen "took 3 generations to catch up to it" when even the ryzen 5 1600x outperforms the 6700 in most scenarios (slightly lower single core performance but also slightly higher multi core performance)? the ryzen 5 1600x sits right in-between the 6700 and 6700k when it comes to performance and while it was released 18 months after the 6700 it definitely didn't take "3 generations" on AMD's end, also its msrp was set $50 lower than the 6700.

I just made the upgrade from the i5-6500 to an i7-6700 in my secondary rig (which is a brand SFF computer with a low profile 1050ti in it). Even with the 1050Ti I could run into CPU bottlenecks when I had the i5-6500, for example in Far Cry 6 1080p high + FSR quality, I had lag spikes when the CPU hit 100% many times, my modded Cities Skylines was also almost unplayable due to the i5 lacking. The i7-6700 fixed these issues, sure Cities Skylines still is CPU limited but it is capable of enjoyable gameplay now. Sure, you will not power a modern decent GPU to its full potential, but for a budget option if you already have an 1151v1 system with an i3-i5, it can still be worth it if you can get one cheap. I have DDR4 in mine though.

Honestly did better than I thought. My 4790k I had at 4.4ghz all core and 32gb cl10 ddr3 2400mhz held up far longer than it should have (and is a bit quicker than the 6700 in this video). A great purchase but also just a sign of the stagnation we faced for so long. Now I question my 10900 and 11900k setups as even at 4k on some titles they can hold back my 6900xt.

Decent DDR3 memory is fine for value and retro-ish dabbling builds if you can put together a rig for a decent price. I have quad channel DDR3-2400 CL10 in my rig and I'd probably be hard pressed to measure any difference to DDR4 slower than 3000. That said you can probably get entry level DDR4 hardware for the same kinda money as high end DDR3 hardware these days.

I still have my old computer 7700K OC 4.8GHz + 16GB DDR4 3000MHz CL15 + RTX 3060ti and it works like a dream. There are sometimes fps drops like in Hogwards in Hogsmeade where an extra 2 cores would be useful. Such a set still has high performance and efficiently copes even with new games. However, this does not change the fact that the I7 7 gen is no longer the latest and after switching to 13700K + 32GB DDR4 3600 MHz CL14 + RTX 3080 12GB the performance jump is like a horse carriage and a car. 😁

Still gaming on a 6600K overclocked to 4.5GHZ all core with 5700XT. My RAM is 2800MHZ DDR4 as I purchased it back when Skylake / DDR4 had literally just dropped and faster RAM was $$$. I have been well and truly CPU bound since getting the 5700XT in 2019 but with the events of the last few years I haven't been able to justify replacing my CPU. It still plays games at 1440P well enough though I don't play many AAA titles currently. Anyone with a 6700K should see far better performance than me especially overclocked. Its only really the last couple of months we've seen AAA titles drop that list 6 cores as min spec anyway. I am eyeing up one of the 7000series x3D AMD chips as an upgrade path (with new board and RAM of course). If I do upgrade ,I'll probably keep the GPU for another couple of years as the CPU upgrade should actually unlock further GPU potential in many games. I'm actually sorta amazed my PC works at all as I remember how quickly CPUs etc improved 20 years ago. Age wise, my current CPU / board / RAM from 2015 is as old as a 1995 Pentium 1 or 486 100MHZ PC built at the release of Windows 95 would have been in 2002 . Even with GPU, storage and RAM upgrades there is no way most 2002 era games would work a 100MHZ chip 7 years later. Even if you run the same comparison with a 2005 Pentium 4 / Pentium D or Athlon 64 PC, by 2012 PCs with those CPUs struggled for gaming because of the improvements during the Core 2 era. A 2006 Core 2 Duo CPU would have still been OK in 2012/13, but you would have run into a bunch of platform limitations such as RAM capacity, PCIE speed (or lack of if it was AGP) and SATA Speed).

Basicly, only 390$ upgrade would allow me to enjoy my PC for another 2-3 years on ultra settings, altough I will probably change CPU, motherboard and RAM at the end of the year and my monitor to 1440p early next year. To those who own 6700 - you can overlock it if you own Z170 gaming motherboard despite it being non-K (I went with mine from 3.4ghz to 4.1ghz, then scalled back to 4ghz and its not going over 55 Celsius at all).
