Former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Aldridge shows you how he played "Crazy Train" live. And it's not what you'd expect!
"If anyone led me up the primrose path, it was Randy Rhoads.”
Tommy is known for many things - playing with Whitesnake, Motörhead, and Yngwie Malmsteen to name a few - but he arguably made some of his biggest impressions backing Ozzy Osbourne in the '80s, joining Ozzy's band for the 1981 Blizzard Of Ozz tour and tracking drums on 1983's Bark At The Moon and several live recordings.
A heavy-hitting rock guru through and through, you can imagine how Tommy translated Ozzy's songs to the stage.

If you never stop doing physical things ,as you get older you can still play as you did when you were 20 , look at Nicko mcbrain , for that matter look at Charlie benantte from anthrax and Dave lombardo ( original slayer drummer ) they are both in the 55 and over area and they are still playing fast thrash metal ,Dave's double bass is as good as it's ever been . Check a drummer out named Steve ashiem , he's in his 50s and is still playing some of the fastest most technical death metal drumming their is .

I’ll never forget walking into the studio when Tommy was warming up for this video. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone play with power like he does, and his attention to detail is insane. Something I think a lot of drummers overlook. He also had the highest respect for Randy Rhoads and wanted to make sure his legacy was honored in the videos we worked on together. Cheers Tommy, you’re a legend!🤘🏻

I was fortunate enough to attend a TA clinic in Palm Desert years ago when Tommy had his carbon-fiber kit. It's true: the power we felt coming from him was insane, as we were all only 3 feet away from him playing his solo from the Tribute album! He told us funny stories about having to record 3 different tempos per song for Ozzy. Ozzy would be drawn to whatever tempo fit the type of drugs he was on: if he was on speed, he liked the faster tempo, weed, slower, alcohol, medium. Heheheheh!!

NONE OF IT would have existed without Bob Daisley who even insisted they'd fly in Randy R. and also got Lee Kerslake in The Blizzard of Ozz band (later hijacked into being the Ozzy Osbourne backing band). Lee wrote the drum parts and wrote a whole lot more for the Diary of a madman, including singing melodies. Lee was trained to play the piano too and sang like a frontman, so he had a complete set of skills. Respect where respect is due and kudos in due order to right targets please.

Watching him play it just like he did while my 14 Year old eyes glazed over in awe all those years ago. What an exceptional treat for me, now in my 50's. This video, with its resolution and many camera angles explains a lot to me that I've wondered about. Thank you Tommy and Drumeo. Let me add that years later I met Tommy at the NAMM show, in line for food, and he was the most gracious, kind and humble Rockstar I've ever met. What a lovely human being. What an absolute living legend Tommy Aldridge is. The first time I saw him perform live was with Ozzy, Randy and Rudy here in Tampa when I was 16 years old in 1981. As a young drummer, he absolutely blew my mind. Now that I'm an old drummer, he astounds me even more. My playing style is absolutely reflective of his although I am nowhere near his level of creativity and power. What really strikes me, too, is his humility in this video. He makes it a point, several times, to note that what he does isn't necessarily "better" than what Lee did, it's just different. What an amazing performer and person he is. There's only one lineup I can think of that's as heavily star studded and that's Velvet Revolver featuring Slash, Duff, and Matt from GnR, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, and Dave Kushner of Wasted Youth. At least off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's plenty I can't think of lol. HELLYEAH comes to mind, but I think VR still had a more star studded lineup aside from Vinnie Paul and Chad Grey of Pantera and Mudvayne respectively.

Neil Peart is the Goat 🐐 and Aldridge is not even on the same level! Pearts kit was double the size, and so were his skills. Aldridge just hits hard, and so does Dave Grohl and so many others, but there are levels to these drummers, and Aldridge is a good drummer, but he is no Peart or Bonzo! Randy Rhoads, on the other hand I would say was on his way to becoming one of the best hard rock guitarists of all time, and even with his death he still is in my books. Just imagine what he could have accomplished if not for the accident. RIP Randy Rhoads

Great performance from this legendary rock drummer. The older he gets, the harder he plays. In the clips from the 80's it looks like he didn't play this hard. I mean, he has always been a heavy hitter but, at 72, he's taken it to another level. Awesome!
