Ah yes, billboards. The modern mans novel, they tell you everything you need to get by in today's consumer-driven world: where to eat, where to drink, who to call when you break the law, and of course, which Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Beach Party Role Play events to go to. At least, that must have been how Rain Nightclub must have seen it. This Final Fantasy XIV free company went viral in the community earlier this year for it's out-of-the-box advertising strategy, wherein they rented multiple real-life billboards in order to advertise their in-game event. This quickly blew up in their face, as it turns out a number of the assets used in the billboard violated the game's material usage rights, including the fact that they used official game assets and logos on a REAL LIFE BILLBOARD. The community was torn over whether this was hilarious or about to result in a crack down from Final Fantasy 14's publisher, Square Enix, and most importantly, would the beach party still go ahead? All of these questions and more answered in today's video.

Even large billboards in I think it was Texas cost only $6,000 for an entire month and the advertisement was only meant to stay up a few days and it was kind of in the middle of nowhere so it was likely even cheaper than that. The FFXIV community decided to act like children as usual over something that wasn't a big deal. The event was held and was fine and the only bad thing that happened was the FFXIV showed it's GCBTW again by spreading tons of false rumours and harassing the entire FC along with anyone they percieved to be involved with the FC.

As someone who actually FREQUENTLY roleplays in FFXIV, the billboard sent the entire rp and mod community on FIRE. The biggest thing that everyone gets wrong about this is that it wasn't actually illegal. It was against the TOS, yes, but nothing done was literally illegal. Unless SE could somehow prove copyright infringement on the assets that were mined then converted into mods by directly linking the billboard's owner, creator of the image, AND person who released the mod (but released for free), which would have been extremely difficult to begin with, and likely only practical to file a cease and desist to whomever that player was. There is nothing illegal about making a billboard to advertise a non-profit event (this was a non-commercial advertisement, the cost of the billboard has nothing to do with it, no money was being gained through the event directly), and just because something is against a game's TOS doesn't mean it's also illegal. Even if this much cringe *should* be illegal, sadly they did nothing wrong in the eyes of a court. There is even already a legal precedent set for this by a previous case where a Washington DC court ruled that if nothing illegal is done then cases involving broken TOS would be dismissed. As said in the video, the only practical solution would be a somewhat dubious cease and desist to the billboard renter instead. The reason in more detail is because of the number of barriers SE would have to hop to actually get to anyone involved in this: To take any action at all they have to factually prove who was even responsible directly, not just "this FC as a whole" (imagine taking an FC to court, lol). No one that created the sign released, datamined, extracted, shared, etc, the copywritten assets (assuming they just downloaded them from a mod sharing site like everyone else), the characters pictured on the sign don't necessarily belong to the people who bought the sign or made the image in the first place, without admission of the person who actually created the image or bought the billboard there is no way to tangibly link it to anyone within the FC either, since anyone can create an ad for anything they want generally speaking. If everyone in the FC decided to play dumb on it then there is nothing SE could even do to retaliate, aside from actions on player accounts (which would have to be blanket to everyone in the FC, which would be what a PR team would refer to as "a big fucking mistake"). SE could contact the company that rented the sign to the player, but a US company being contacted by a Japanese legal team without any kind of existing legal case and asking for them to release confidential customer information would likely result in a "fuck off", so it is very unlikely they would *ever* be able to discover which specific players actually rented the billboard. Even if a specific person openly claims to have rented the billboard, if they decide to change their mind when they see legal issues coming and suddenly "didn't really rent it", the onus of proof would be back on SE to figure it out which would be incredibly unlikely to ever prove beyond a doubt. Yes, the billboard was extremely cringe. Yes, it could have resulted in another SE ear-twisting about third party tools and mods. Yes, it was against the TOS in a variety of ways. But, actually illegal? Maybe in clown world or in XIV Twitter's dreams. Do you know what IS actually illegal, though? Cyberbullying and online harassment, which also happens to be XIV Twitter's favorite reaction to anything like this. This billboard managed to bring out some of the ugliest parts of the XIV community, which did result in some suspensions and bans towards the harassers. It's okay to think this kind of thing is cringe or even make fun of it among friends, but going after people for doing something stupid is never okay and I hope some day the XIV community can grow up and learn to let people look stupid on their own instead of laying down and rolling around in the shit with them instead. Anyways, this cringe reddit post is over.

I live about an hour's drive away from Missouri City, TX. In fact I lived there as a child in the late 80s and early 90s. It's more or less an extension of Houston. It's a nice place to live. In fairness with Final Fantasy each number is a new setting, they just tend to create tons of spin-offs and those spin-offs have sequels and so on. Take arguably the most popular FF game in the franchise, Final Fantasy 7. You've got the original, you've got the Crisis Core prequel, you've got the Dirge of Cerberus spin-off, you've got the remake, you've got the Crisis Core remake, you've got Before Crisis, etc. Same with other entries. You've got the Dissidia Final Fantasy series which is separate from the main series and has sequels of it's own and so on and so on.

So unless a texan actually went into the discord, found the nsfw, reported to their representative, requested it go get screened, and actually wanted to deal with a politician, shit never gets done. The worst that would have happened was the club gets publicly scrutinized and cringed at. After all, no one wants to be Nintendo.
