Wow! One of the reasons I love these ballads is that their themes are universal across human culture and time. Love, betrayal, death, money, power...the more things change, the more they stay the same! I found this via a BBC article on the most disturbing folk songs. It's hard to mess up the song - to me the Steeleye Span version is definitive - but this band with Eliza Carthy is awesome!

I found it via that article too and Eliza Carthy really is quite something... but as folk songs go it's not really that disturbing. Widow's Curse sung by Bellowhead is FAR worse and somehow the BBC omitted it!
