The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, and Allen Leech is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Editor-in-chief Rottentomatoes.com), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).
See what other critics are saying: www.rottentomat...
During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency', an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality - little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing. Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, THE IMITATION GAME follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives. I'm glad Alonso said that, alot of people look back at history and call everyone an asshole for being racist or homophobic, and yeah, that was shitty, but that was how people were back then. I'm not saying it's necessarily okay, but it's how it was and to say you wouldn't be that way is incredibly ignorant.

Exactly. It was mostly a part of being raised that way. Nowadays we're all raised to be accepting and non violent. Who knows how people will look back at us one day and think "whoa? They were really idiots back then for this and that."

This movie is absolutely beautiful and calling it 'fine' is a severe (and highly unjustified) understatement. It's funny, tragic, thrilling, heartfelt, meaningful, relevant and inspiring throughout and it's subtle and nuanced. Benedict Cumberbatch is mesmerizing in the role and I think the movie honors Turing's legacy in the best way possible: by delicately showing that he was a man who changed the world forever.

It's a genuine shame when people cannot appreciate brilliant acting even if it hits them on the face. And an even greater tragedy when they resort to crude comments that only stand as a testament for their own lack of taste and manners.

Don't presume to think you know everything about me because you don't. I am not 'just' drawn by his looks. I'm drawn by his range in acting, how he completely immerses himself into a role and how dedicated and talented he his. I appreciate him for the art that he represents and not for his appearance. If you can appreciate the above mentioned people, I find it surprising that you cannot appreciate Cumberbatch, but that's alright. To each his own. Just don't obnoxiously assume that you know something about a person whom you have never met or never even heard of. Because you don't and you won't.

Ignore the trolls Jelly, this was a great film, and Cumberbatch has probably given the performance of his career, and apart from Star Trek 2 I'd hardly taken any notice of him until now. Even going in knowing the full story of Turing and being ready to nitpick the historical inaccuracies I ended up with a lump in my throat at the end of this, and I very rarely get that from any film, maybe once a decade, and I have a few of those under my belt now :p

The Poles were the first to break Enigma but they never used a computer to do it. It should also be noted that just before the war the Poles lost the ability to read Enigma as the German's changed the settings and rotors.

Could not agree more. Cliche after cliche. Exposition moment after exposition moment. Unrealistic dialogue after unrealistic dialogue. I wish it had the structure of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy combined with the Turing story. This was such hollywood fluff.

I agree, i thought i was the only one seeing it as a sack of cliches. The production setting and design was beautiful but the storyline was incompetent in the sense that it was just all over the place. There were three settings/stories: the police investigation, Alan breaking enigma, and his relationship with Keira. It feels like it was made for three different movies but they decided last minute to just make it with one character

Imitation Game, second best movie of the year - behind Birdman. Giving this movie a 5.9 or a 6 something is criminal. I've seen these guys give worse movies higher scores. I'm all for opinions, but none of theirs seem logically valid nor consistent. It wasn't gay enough? Oh back then everyone would have hated you for being gay, therefore, the movie sucks, what?! Was the dialogue not great, the acting, the cinematography, the character development, the suspense, the plot twists? This movie literally had every element of a great film, definitely Oscar worthy of a nomination. On a side note, that scene in Birdman where Keaton has his rant at the bar with that woman critic who unabashedly denounces his film despite emphasizing on the plays structure, technicalities, etc. almost seems ironic on this specific viewing of this movie. This one here is a gem, and disliking it is fine, but a little consistency and emphasis on why you don't like it next time, guys. 'This has Weinstein written all over it'', and that's a bad thing, because?

Hey guys, just watched the film last night and I don't know why we are so concerned with whether or not the events in the film were actually true or not. As it really wasn't the purpose of the film? Like you even said yourself 'breaking the enigma code was not the big capper.' Look at the title of the film, it's the imitation game not breaking the enigma code. It's about the ramifications when one has to pretend they are some thing they aren't. I would have thought you had gotten this idea of imitation, as it is an idea so beautifully orchestrated throughout the film. I believe the film wouldn't have been amazing as it was without the director utilising fiction as vessel of truth, for society to look at themselves with more scrutiny. It reminds me a lot of the verisimilitude in Tim O'Briens short stories. For example: Before he's found out gay (opposed to what actually happened historically as you say he was very open about being gay.) His boss tells him he's 'becoming the man I've always wanted you to be.' Showing that he's worthy for being treated like anyone else, and I think we can unanimously agree he definitely deserved more. Yet in the end he's forced to take chemical castration, or poison or we'll strip him from everything in his life that has meaning when we propose to take Christopher from him if he doesn't choose to mutilate his body. This fiction vs reality paints a better depiction of how people that are 'different' feel as it pinpoints society and shows how fucked up we were and still are today. This dude was the man, and an official pardon from the queen last year makes it all better, fuck no. We can't afford to let anything like this happen again. For me this message is parallel to that of speciesism. Does anything else come to your guys' minds? And your comment about him being 'quiet and restrained that's shorthand for gay?' Back then of course it was. It was his only choice or to pretend that he was something he wasn't. It's shown in the film, when he tells Kiera he's gay it's the only time Kiera is wearing red, (on top of her blue dress.) The colour red clothing is a symbol, of wrong decisions. Throughout the movie the bad guys, the guards who turn off his Turing machine are wearing red all the time, and they are constantly making the wrong decisions. So it's symbolic as he's finally coming out telling people who he really is was a wrong decision as society still wouldn't accept him. Kind of explains why you think the movie isn't gay enough, you are too concerned with the petty things like ohh Keira Knightly is too beautiful for the movie, it's quite fucked up. I think her character was necessary to show Alan's compassionate and genuine side like when he believes in her by letting her participate in an intellectual activity when she's a girl. 'You don't go to a Hollywood film for a history lesson right?' ;) *audience applauds bed shitting skills* if you want to hear true events why are you even bothering with literature let alone reviewing it? I think mindlessly watching the news suits you guys better ! :~)

I am proud of Hollywood this year. They put out the Theory of Everything, which is a biopic of Stephen Hawking, and in the same year they put out another biopic of another genius, Alan Turing, in The Imitation Game. To add to this wonderful Hollywood tribute to science, they produced an excellent fictional movie about our noble aspiration to be space travelers in Interstellar, where the lead character was supposed to be an engineer. In an industry that makes so many films that pay homage to trivial figures in sports, its nice to see that they pulled out all the stops to make two great films about intellectuals who actually contributed to the betterment of mankind. We don't need to lionize football, basketball, and baseball players anymore than we already have. If they didn't play sports, the world would not be any worse off. However, to not have the contributions of two mammoth intellectuals like Hawking and Turing, the world would have lost much. Its time our entertainment industry more regularly reflect the importance of scientific men and women and emphasize that if society should be looking up to anyone, it should be to the person struggling with an equation or figuring out the cure for a disease, and not someone with the the most touchdowns or three point shots.

Giving this movie a rating of 6 is so stupid, even rotten tomatoes gave this movie a 80+% rating! They only focused on the history aspect of this movie, they didnt fucking talked about the cinematography, the acting, the dialogue and so much more! Do they expect a 2 hour film to hold the whole fucking history book??? This movie may not be 100% accurate, but it did shed light on how homosexuals were treated in the past and how the war was ended and also who was the founding father of computer science. And i feel Benedict Cumberbatch did an exceptional job as Alan Turing, he showed so much skill in wat he do. Kiara Knightly did amazing too!! She showed that she wasnt just a pretty face, she showed quality acting! The boy who played young Alan, I COULD FEEL THE LOVE IN HIS EYES FOR CHRISTOPHER. if i can see that, NOW THATS SKILL! Overall it was easily one of my favourite movies of all time! It made me think, it made me laugh, cry, feel shocked and amazed! And thats wat a movie should do! Ps. As much as i support gay rights, i didnt care if there was a whole sexy makeout scene or not, the tragedy in its own, that Alan couldnt even confess his love was so heartbreaking!

The inaccuracies? If you mean Turing's character then yes it's a bit way off. But in terms of what Ben said about the Poles who 'made' the computer? Wrong! The Poles were the first who BROKE the enigma code, not who MADE/INVENTED the computer. Turing and Bletchley team were given a different, and much difficult, Enigma machine and he mentioned it in the movie. The creation of computer however grew out of Turing and other mathematicians who developed it for many years.

@mignik01
@mignik01 10 жыл бұрын
Poles didn't make the "computer". Their machine was not a computer. The computer was Turing's Universal machine, not even the one shown in the movie. The "bomba" created by Marian Rejewski could not figure out the plug settings and when the German's made it more complicated, the machine was pretty much ineffective in breaking the enigma. Add to that fact, the Airforce and Army Enigma's were broken before. But the real "unbreakable code" was the naval enigma. So it was Turing along with Welchman itself who broke the unbreakable code, not the poles. Although Marian Rejewski was able to work out the working of the entire enigma machine by just looking at the messages and never seeing the machine itself. Plus it was Turing who figured out the encyphering method used by the German navy. So even though it was an ingenious method by Welchman that made the code breaking machine much more efficient, it was Turing who was instrumental in all of this. You don't get mentioned as the single biggest contribution that led to winning the war by churchil for nothing.
@holmbjerg
@holmbjerg 10 жыл бұрын
Enigma wasn't even the most important codebreaking during WWII. Germany stopped using enigma for important messages in 1942, The allies had an Enigma machine conquered from a German U-boat earlier. The rest of the war they used the much more advanced Lorenz instead. That code was broken by mathematician Bill Tutte and he is the guy they should have made a movie about. He was also the guy who commissioned Tommy Flowers with building the first computer, Colossus.

So Alonso gives a very pissy rant about hiding the gay in 1940's England. Ben follows up with everyone on the project knew he was gay, and they were fine with it, and no one says anything? WTF I think TYT judged this movie too harshly. Ben didn't like this movie because he preferred "the book." Yeah that's an excellent movie critique. If you're going to see one world war 2 movie at the theaters this Christmas, see Imitation Game. Don't bother to see Unbroken. I'm glad JellyLovesFaith has 20 likes.

I really think filmmakers taking liberties with historical events is a given. One doesn't go to the cinema to do research for a thesis; one goes to be entertained, and perhaps, along the way, learn the basics of a historical event that one might, if one is so inclined, look into further.

If you tell a story about Turing solving the enigma code and you leave out the Coventry, then people will be outraged. So that's really why Coventry is in here even though it's not really a part of the larger narrative arc. It doesn't have to do with the personal story that the movie is trying to weave but it can't be left out. I was about to give this movie a higher rating and then I came back to this rewatch your review. I'm glad I did that I did that, and (to your credit) the Young Turks ought to know that this show really is ~that~ good (to warrant repeat viewings for insight). Ben's point about authenticity of the relationships made me think again about how certain characters (especially certain conversations) exist in this movie only to induce a certain audience reaction. I know that a statement ~that~ generalized applies to all storytelling, but I suppose it rises to the level of a narrative flaw if the audience knows why you're using the storytelling mechanism that you're using. When you tell your friends an anecdote, you can see the points when they figure out what you're trying to do (what impression or subtext you're trying to imply). Then the rest of what you say (because you've lost the subtlety) will sour your audience ("I see what you're doing here..."). If what you're doing is trying to generate a dramatic moment, then that moment will seem phony (because we feel that the drama in a situation is self-evident or self-revealing; we reject overly illustrated drama because it seems inauthentic). So that's what I got out of what Ben said about how certain scenes are phony. I think those are the scenes that we can see the dramatic mechanism being used too easily, so the drama feels contrived. I know (or at least I think) that Ben means "phony" as in dramatically inauthentic (not factually inauthentic); so I would describe this as contrivance. I don't deny that women were probably turned away like Keira Knightley was, but that scene and that way of introducing the character (to me) was a contrivance. Even if it was representative of what would typically happen to a woman arriving like that, the place in the story and how it was done made the scene's objective obvious. And there were other scenes like that and other characters like that, that you guys mentioned.

Yeah, 2003. Very enlightened! I recall reading an article here in the UK that highlighted the matter. That feature also exposed the fact that certain parts of America (as late as in the 21st Century), were not only STILL lynching black people, but were also lynching men suspected of being gay. From what I read, U.S law enforcement regarding this seemed pitifully negligent.

Watching this review, I feel like the complaint they are really trying to make is that the movie is boring. I don't think the movie is boring, not by a long shot, but I feel like here they are nit-picking and really, they found the movie boring, or that it simply didn't appeal to their tastes and they did not like it - which would have been fair, had it ended there. But they go on and try and justify their points with vagueness and complaining that Benedict didn't straight up fuck someone. Can we not do subtle? Would it have been for the better of his memory if we saw where exactly his cock went? Mmm... As for those supposed historical inaccuracies, I'm sure as others had mentioned - Turing did not claim to have created some of the plans for the machine he made - It was credited to the Poles and this was mentioned in the film - The invention of the computer is a completely separate incident and I kinda feel like these guys knew this, but again, they were trying to avoid the "it was just boring" explanation to seem like intellectuals. The Turing character in this was taken from accounts during the war and those after of his psychiatrist, which label him as an eccentric but ultimately shy. And again, I feel like they knew this, but needed some way of showing distain for the movie without saying that they simply did not enjoy it. It's not perfect, but having studied Turing in my dissertations, I found this a fair stab at the theme.

NAME ONE FILM that is about being straight. Most good films are about life and its multiple challenges, not promoting an unnatural life style. (I get some joy from bing politically incorrect on this "fashionable" issue, since I think it is over exposed these days. So if I make gays angry, I am doing useful work in letting them know they cannot and will not convert the world.)

Guido Fox Name one film about being straight? Uhm... seriously? Are you kidding me? The American Pie movies, 40 Year Old Virgin, There's Something About Mary, Romeo and Juliet, Titanic... you want me to continue forever? "Durrr, those aren't about that, they are about this and that!" - Yeah, well, so can movies with gay romances in them be too. Brokeback Mountain isn't more focused on homosexuality than any of the mentioned movies are focused on heterosexuality. And there's nothing "unnatural" about being gay, you idiot.

I just want to say I get Ben's "sometimes it bothers me and sometimes it doesn't there's no set rule" thing. I have that with science, e.g. I HATED the "science" behind "cold fusion bombs" in Star Trek Into Darkness but the fast and the loose with relativity stuff in Interstellar felt really harmless to me.

Wow... I'm sad it was inaccurate since I love history, but I would have given it at least a 7 or 8, its been a while since I've seen such a good movie. I like films that inspire me or change my views on things... not many films give me that. I'm going to read the book now :) By the way, there was a guy who sat near us in the cinema who had worked with Alan. He also said it was inaccurate in parts but he seemed to like it :)

Have to agree. In fact, I'd go as far as to call it an average biopic. The colour scheme is off-putting for a bleak period in British history. The gay discussion is only given a proper thought in the third act. Cumberbatch really doesn't go out of his depth with this one, and Keira Knightley does nothing accept say "Oh" in received pronunciation. Average.

A quite disappointing review. I personally really liked the movie and you guys rating it at 6.2 surprised me a lot. Even more, you totally fail to present your arguments for such a low rating, you simply nitpicked it or said flat out stupid stuff. Anyhow, I fave the feeling that for some reasons you simply didn't wanted to like it.

It's not about being accurate. It's about trying to be as honest as possible while trying to drag people in with a story AND THEN make them absorb the true story behind it. At worst it's only 70-80% correct, not bad considering that majority of the population wouldn't even look into this topic if it had not been required in their usual highschool assignment. Hook, line and sinker. Nitpicking over this is pathetic. UNSUBBED.

***** The thing about the movie not being "gay" is just stupid. For me the basic rating of a movie is 5/10, from there I add the good and subtract the bad. 7/10 is a good movie, but not a great one. I acknowledge that the acting is great; it also has great production design. One of the strangest things that happened during the academy awards was the Imitation Game winning best original screenplay. The screenplay was the worst thing about this movie. Historical events were changed to make the movie more filmic. An example of this is the scene where Turing realizes that he can use the message sent by the Germans to find the combination used on the enigma machine. In the movie this plays like the revelation cliché. In real life, this was a basic principle that the machine worked on. Denniston was not as mean in real life; he understood the problems with devolving the machine. In the movie, Denniston was purely a plot-device so that Turing has some opposition. It also presents the myth that Alan Turing was the man who cracked the code, but it was a collaborative project. In closing the acting and production is great. The screenplay sucks.

Your review is horrible. You spent half the time complaining about something to do with how Turing being gay was portrayed when that's not even relevant to any sane person watching the movie. Alan Turing is the father of modern computers and this movie illustrates it perfectly. Whether it's his anti-social personality or his input in the war effort and everything in-between. That's what should matter in your review. It's there and it's more than what anyone could've hoped for and yet you completely ignore it. You should instead do reviews of feminist dance therapy sessions.

what I found atrocious was the reasoning. "This was a movie that we would have gotten 50 years ago" and "Nowadays movies need to be edgier" and shit.. like what? Should they have shown us Cumberbatch assfucking a dude on top of the computer to make it edgier or what? The movie was very gorgeous to look at, had a lot of humor and was overall riveting to watch. And fuck those people who complain that a movie doesn't deal with real events as they were.. that's not the point of a biopic. The point of a biopic is to make you interested in that person and find out more about him or her and that's what this movie successfully did.
