The IMPACT of Battle Music

Music is an important part of any game, but battle themes exist in a different part of our brains. For many experiences they're the first songs that come to mind, defining how we remember the gameplay. An impactful battle theme is crafted in many ways, so today I simultaneously have a stroke and give some good examples. Don't call the ambulance. I am FINE!

The thing is with Atelier games is that all of their battle themes are supposed to make you feel good and put a smile on your face, or be the most wild bangers to ever exist for no reason.

I can't believe my eyes, praise for Dragon Quest Music? I am so happy. Favorite series and DQ8 is one of my favorite games. Finally someone understanding dragon quest's reliance on it's history and familiarity isn't a bad thing, but rather a positive. Great video, absolutely loving the content.

Bug Fables uses its battle theme surprisingly effectively. The first battle theme is very peppy and upbeat, very much akin to the games it was inspired by. However, as soon as the second half of the game hits and the stakes and sense of urgency triples, a much more tense battle theme takes over that gives that vibe of “Damn, shit really just got serious”, which is fitting since the song is literally called “Team, It’s Getting Serious”

Great video, as always! I enjoy the limitations composers had on the older systems, and how they still cranked out masterpieces. The OG pokemon games personify that so well. From the peaceful towns, whimsical routes, spooky areas, to even the downright terrifying final battle with your rival. When the soundtrack becomes bigger than the game itself and becomes something you hear and emotionally respond to? Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Games like Celeste, Undertale, Ori, Hollow knight - they still do this so well

I also really value how the music is implemented. Like people look at me weird whenever i tell em i am not as fond of XC1 ost in comparison to 2 and 3 because of how songs like Visions of the Future and the one where an ally dies interrupt the normal battle themes. On the other side of the spectrum you have Octopath 1 and 2 with those epic personalized transitions into the boss battle and something new Octopath 2 did with it's boss themes, which to me became one of the most hype moments I've ever felt in gaming. It's hard to decide my favorite VG OST because the competition is brutal, but 5 i usually think back on are XC2 and Pokemon Explorers of Sky for those hard hitting leitmotifs, Octopath 2 and Great Ace Attorney for the dynamic implementation and Pokemon Platinum for the Nostalgia pick

Great stuff as always. I love that DQ8 got a mention, it was one of the first JRPGs I ever played other than Paper Mario TTYD or Pokémon and that soundtrack blew my mind as a kid. Also interesting that SO Second Story had ten themes for each of the big bosses, that sounds really dope. As for my favourite soundtrack, in terms of JRPG battle soundtracks I'd say the Xenoblade series or maybe Trails in the Sky or something, but overall my favourite soundtrack is without a doubt Explorers of Sky. Keep it up dude!

I love the variety of samples you provided. Heavy orchestral and rock vgm can be hit or miss to me to be honest. I prefer the heavy claustrophobia of stuff like later SMT OSTs or breezy Atelier music if I'm listening in my own free time. I'm almost NEVER a context matters person, but I do feel like there's a lot more battle themes I'm fine with in game than out of it.

To dive into the battle theme topic, my fav is Koudelka's theme. It's such a unique and majestic track that you can listen it for hours and never get tired of it (seriously this track lasts like 10 minutes)

Sinster Shadows: Kingdom Hearts 2 Not just VG song, favorite song ever. It screams push forward. Many true things in video, VG music placement, fitting theme of the game, and heat is just as important as any other media.

you should check out the legend of heroes franchise, specifically the trails part of that franchise. when i heard the battle theme for trails in the sky for the first time i genuinely had to put my controller down because i couldn't believe the masterpiece i was hearing. other good ones are the cold steel 1 battle theme and azure battle theme. 👍 (it's also my favorite game series ever so i feel the need to talk about it whenever i can)

Have you played any of the Ys games? Or Falcom games in general. I'd be curious to hear your impression of them. The games are pretty budget graphics-wise, but the music is top tier! Battle 58 from Ys IV (PC Engine version) is a good example.
