It amazes me that we are in 2020 and companies are still not required to take responsibility for the lifetime of their product. It is unthinkable!

Hi there, plastic isn't just a problem in many households, but it is becoming a trend to put a lot of plastic in our gardens and landscapes. I'm a landscape architecture and it is astonishing that more and more people prefer fences made out of plastic over wood or even living plants. Private gardens become very sterile and dead, because people don't want plants anymore because of the work they create. Also, the surfaces of streets, walkways or on playgrounds are now oftentimes made out of plastic. There are many companies who develop these new plastic surfaces and then market them as 'green' or 'eco friendly'. But nobody talks about it.

As a landscape architect, do you have a recommendation for deck material to use? Personally I am not a fan of wood decks because in the Northern climate I live in they degrade quickly and require a lot of expensive and time consuming upkeep every year. A wood fence is different because it will still work for its intended purpose even if it degrades, whereas a deck would become an unsafe hazard (especially if it on an upper level of the building). Do you think brick and/or concrete patios are okay solutions?

Okay, about the companies’ responsibility... My parents work in forest industry and a bakery asked once, if it’s okay to throw away their bad staff cause u know - animal would eat that. And the forester agreed. Then after a while my parents’ company arrives and what they see are hundreds of packed in plastic bags breads with this bakery’s name on it. It wasn’t even possible to clean this, because wild animal torn those bags apart. I don’t know how it ended for this bakery, but as a child in which half of the family works in forestry it is disgusting how many things people throw away in the nature. Fantastic video though, kisses from Poland✌🏻

I found really really hard to buy clothes without plastic. It's a nightmare, specially if you live in a cold area. And let's be realistic, buying second hand clothes, although it helps the situation, it doesn't fix it. It would be amazing if you could address this issue. Thank you so much for all the information and awareness you share. 😘👏
@kate4896

YES! I have read somewhere that vast majority (approximately 70%) of new clothes, both fast fashion and high end fashion, are made of synthetic/polymer materials and it is exponentially growing, by 2030 (if I'm not mistaken) 85% of all new clothes will be plastic based. Scary. Also, I have been having a dilema- what is less impactful to buy? Sustainable natural fiber (for example hemp) clothes or to buy recycled materials/plastic clothes BECAUSE not all of us can find second hand clothes that fit (this comes from 6ft 1in aka 186cm tall girl) it is easier if you are petite you can always cut/take in clothing but if you are tall or plus size... forget it!
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of the filling fibers for these clothes are actually downcycled plastic packaging, fucn fact, although it definitly does not help the situation. I can recommend looking at smaller eco companies which tend to be much more innovative than bigger chain stores. I have a list on my blog called " eco brands I stand by", so perhaps you can find inspiration there 🌿

I try to go for cotton or viscose, but when I need warm coat...poliester it is. I am allergic to wool, so I do not have much choice. Also finding more formal trousers in natural or nonplastic synthetic fibers (but not wool..), fitting me and not costing a fortune seems almost impossible. For some reason most brands seem to forget that women can have hips.

I have an issue with finding clothes that fit me. So I feel bad about it when I choose synthetic materials because it’s the shirt/pants that happens to carry my size and fit. I also find that stretchy jersey blend of cotton with elastane last a lot longer than pure cotton. It makes me sad.

This is great! Maybe I would add in the conclusion the fact that we should also push government for Environmental policies and bans on production and distribution of certain types of plastic. We should start considering this subject when voting ad consider more politicians that want to address this problem. As you said, as consumers we cannot have the the whole responsibility and it is utopian to think that all people in the world (or even just Europe) would start being vegan and reuse single use plastic. We are not even able to all wear masks in a pandemic. So my only real hope remains to government taking responsibility and action too, to reach results were individuals cannot.

Agree! In the US we just had our Vice Presidential nominee debate tonight and even the supposed "progressive" party made adamant that they will not ban fracking. Utterly disgusting. The government is barely doing anything to address climate change and other environmental concerns as it is.

I live in Tennessee and I’m my town there is a recycling place but almost no rules. I’ve heard a few people say they don’t actually recycle it but trash it and put the recycling bins out just for a good impression. Do you think this is true? Also I hear few “zero waste” channels talk about water filters and which ones are best and was wondering what you use. Love this series!!🧡
@coralovesnature
@coralovesnature 4 жыл бұрын
I do not know about the recycling topic, although if true it's very disturbing! Personally, I use a Berkey water filter. It is a free standing, gravity filtration system made of stainless steel. The BB9 filters themselves last for 3,000 gallons of water (which depending on your filtered water usage, could be anywhere from 3-9 years, much longer than most filters). The investment up front is a bit more than most other water filters, but you will pay much less in the long run due to not needing to replace the filters often. Also, the system is so effective that it could be used to filter rain or pond water in the event of a natural disaster or utility outage. I get mine from berkeyfiltersusa.com, but I would recommend doing some research on Berkey, watching KZbin videos, etc. as it is quite interesting (to me anyways) :)

A part of the sustainable movement that isn’t fully addressed is consumption. The movement primarily focuses on reusable and secondhand. What about buying less and quality items in our lives? Why are we focusing on recycling that has its own set of problems? Overconsumption still occurs and secondhand shops is an easy pass off as doing good just like recycling. When hurricanes go through any area of where people are living taking all the garbage back out to the oceans. It seems the elephant in the room is repeatedly ignored. 🙂Thanks for issues you bring out. Could you do a video just on overconsumption?
@Gittemary
@Gittemary 4 жыл бұрын
A continous topic and theme in my content is overconsumption, which is present in most of my videos in context of the consumer topics that are mentioned, so you'll find plenty of videos about it here - especially the greenwashing video, the eco trends video etc 🌿
@coralovesnature
@coralovesnature 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that overconsumption is a massive issue; however, I wholeheartedly disagree that it is not addressed by the movement. I have been following Gittemary and Shelbizle for a while and both of them emphasis the point of consuming less in nearly every video they make. Pretty much any "minimalism influencer", if you will, this is exactly what they are advocating for.

I love this series. It took a lot to even get my parents, grandparents, and friend to even start recycling. I'm afraid to tell them that it isn't the best way to go, because I know then they'll drop it completely. I've alluded to decreasing their plastic usage or using reusables, but at this point I don't know what else to tell them because I know that I clearly care about the environment more than them put to together. What should I do?
@coralovesnature
@coralovesnature 4 жыл бұрын
This is a difficult situation! It has hard to force people to care when they are reckless and have no regard for their impact. You could trying showing them educational videos such as Gittemary's if they are willing to learn. However, at the end of the day you have to accept that you are only responsible for your own efforts. If you make an attempt to educate others and they are unwilling to change, at a certain point you have to walk away for your own sanity. Also, as Gittmary said, it is massive corporations who SHOULD have the onus on them. While it's not good to be reckless, the impact of a small handful of indivuals is much less than the impact of massive, billion-dollar, global companies.

Great info as always, thank you! Particularly the part about where the most (plastic) waist comes from and that you have to take the whole life cycle of a product into account. Who would have thought of the greenhouse gases in the production, or of fishing nets beiing dumped (go vegan!), or that recycling often actually means downcycling?
@priscillajimenez27
@priscillajimenez27 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know they try to regulate how much fishing goes on but they need to reform the industry completely with maybe like logged in nets used or trackers on them so in case one tears and disconnects from the boat, they can find it. And since it's logged in as a net for the business, it has to be logged in again after each day to keep track of where the nets are so the broken ones cam he properly disposes of.

Priscilla Jimenez thank you for actually offering a solution other than "go vegan". I was vegan for almost 3 years but having been recently diagnosed with an illness that doesn't allow me to use any legumes, I had to start eating fish and eggs again for protein. That sounds like a good solution, we need to hold the fishing industry accountable for the waste they produce and sanction those who leave their plastic waste in the ocean

Does pan fiber have a negative impact on people's health and on our environment, with the way it's produced? I've googled it and it's just french to me, I have no cooking clue what I'm reading.

From what I just read on the internet, it is a sort of plastic since it's acrylic. It then means that you should try and find another type of wool, maybe pure wool or cotton ? Hi, at 2:20 you said that plastic contains dinosaurs and I get that it’s a joke but as a geology student I simply cannot leave such a grand mistake uncorrected. Simply put; petrol forms in marine environments and dinosaurs didn’t live in the ocean. Carcasses of large ‘sea monsters’ like ichthyosaurs and pleistosaurs may have incidentally found their way into a to-be oil bed, but those aren’t dinosaurs :)
