Can I get permission to use your video in my online course? The name of the class is Methods and Materials for teaching the Bilingual Student. Benedictine University needs written permission to show this video to our students learning to be a bilingual teacher. Thank you.

I think the idea of teaching this children Spanish, and starting young makes a lot of sense. Combining English native speakers and Spanish native speakers is a great way for language exchange, as well...but if 90% of their day is in Spanish and the native English speakers benefit from that, as well as improving their English at home with their family, then how are you supporting the children whose family speaks only Spanish? You're only giving those children 10% of their day to learn English, with no support at home.

A friend of ours who's family speaks virtually all spanish, sent her child to one of these programs and regrets it because the child was spending all day with his native language, then coming home to also nothing but spanish. Basically, exactly what you said. However she did recommend that we send our child, since our household does primarily speak english, and our child would benefit from the NEW (to her) language, while still keeping up with english at home. So I guess just like with everything, it's good for some, but not for everyone.

They want to start the Dual Language education in Puerto Rico or have already. The decoding process to translate the word to either language in their minds is going to difficult for them (students). If they have 6 classes (with Health as a extra credit/ elective) and from 6, 2 in English language and the others in Spanish, this will cause, they won't be dominating the English. Plus if the teacher does not know English (from writing/speaking/translating) or even how to pronounce the words correctly the students will have a confusion so high that if mom or dad don't participate in exposing them to the English language in other ways they will pay it in higher grades. The lack of bilingual teachers in Puerto Rico is getting worst everyday. The Department of Education of Puerto Rico knows this problem and it has been for years. But sadly, they do not care if kids learn or not. Many bilingual teachers have "Jumped the Lake" to the states because of how late teachers are getting hired and even paid because they owe student loans, mortgage and got tired of "political hiring system from the DE of PR".

I saw some black kids in the video and they didn't seem as interested in dual learning as the others. was it what the video showed or is it true? also, i'm taking an early childhood development class and they are now acknowledging ebonics as a language. my question is: will that "language" be implemented into curriculum and taught to others like Spanish, Chinese, etc? my point is African American Vernacular English is not a language and it should not be viewed as one. in my book, it is said that it is NOT slang or broken English but an actual language that stemmed from slavery and West African Bantu languages. I believe this is hooey. who's with me?

Ebonics is total bullshit and hurts blacks all day long. The popularity is all about being a little anti-white. You are 1000% correct.

It's not a language. It's a dialect. There's no need to teach it because there's no official governing body which uses. It's kind of like jamican patwa. No one needs to learn it. You speak it at home but you speak standardized English at school and at job interviews. same with how Appalachian people speak. They speak a certain way within their social circle and will speak "normal English" in a professional environment. it's called codeswitching
