AMTRAK built a brand new railroad station just west of Eighth Avenue, next door to Penn Station in the Main Office Building of the Post Office and is called "AMTRAK-Moynihan Station Hall" and has a glass ceiling over 100 feet high in the main concourse. Penn Station is still used by the LIRR and NJ TRANSIT, and they are building a connection to Metro-North train tracks in the Bronx to run trains to Penn Station.

I wish we still had conductors like that in the UK, it's all gone electronic now. The 'get into any train with a specific key' is a thing here too, it's a square key that's been standard since the 1870s here. It's fun to watch this how the USA is actually much more traditional than england!

The addition to Grand Central Terminal is called "GCT-Madison" and consists of 12 platforms for LIRR railroad trains and is 100+ feet deep, so passengers take long escalators to the surface and opened up in 2022.

Well if you actually look at the route network, the heart of the train system for Amtrak and freight rail is indeed Chicago. Geographically perfectly positioned to interchange east and west coast rail. However, as far as volume, the northeast corridor by far takes the cake with passengers and NYC is perfectly positioned to interchange all that traffic.
