I can agree with you, nothing beats being ambitious, but sometimes it's better just to be simple

I'm all for being ambitious, I just think that the ambition should be pointed in the appropriate direction. If your ambition is to become a better animator, I don't see how spending hours adding details is going to make someone reach that goal faster. In a way, simple animations are in fact more ambitious as they allow you to explore new things quicker.

Quick disclaimer, I don't actually make pixel art all that often, I'm more used to digital art: But a good compromise that I found is to do the full animation with the basic, bare-bones sprite first (with maybe a bit of basic 1 tone shading for some depth), and now you have a finished "base" animation that you can make as detailed as you want if you so desire.

Yeah I like the way Adam Younis does it, focusing on the blocked out shapes first

Saw this video in my recommendations, thought it had 1.6 million views. Clicked, watched, and was like: Yeah, this makes sense for 1.6 million views, sure. And then I looked at the channel and it's at 700 subs, and I was: Hmm, thats weird, shouldn't it be ...? The video is at 1.6 k instead of a 1.6 million... Oh... Hope it will get more. The advice is solid. Although maybe there should've been a tiny remark that you still should do details sometimes, to practice animating and drawing details. Just like do that specifically when you want to train animating details instead of all the time. Or maybe you shouldn't attempt that at the start, who am I to tell.

Thank you for the feedback. You're right, I think I should have better emphasized the fact that people should eventually learn to animate with detail at some point. However, I feel that in the early stages, when you don't know much about creating good motions, people should focus away from the details. The thing also with details is that you can practice them separately from animation (by working on a still drawing) - it's not so necessary that you practice them simultaneously.

It would be less time consuming to add details on an idle animation, but can make some changes to be simplistic when in motion if the motion is fast enough that detailing isn't required and also using smearing saves alot of time, at the end it depends on the character size on screen to know whether detailing actually matters
