King's dad wasn't saying that he's non-binary, but referring to the fact that he's technically King's mom as well as dad, which is why he said "But dad works too." So that means that King, if he wants to start a family, can do so through parthenogenesis/asexual reproduction.
@GooseEnthused

I think both were the implication there. The line “best of both things” especially implies to me that kings dad is some flavor of nonbinary. Nonbinary people can still use gendered honorifics if they feel like it!

This is why the owl house is such an important show to me. I was raised in a pretty homophobic household, and thus my perception of the LQBTQ+ community was rather skewed. I watched the first episode of the owl house around when it first aired, and was intrigued by what I saw. Time went on, episodes aired, and then the first Lumity cheek kiss happened. I had dismissed previous signs as simply gals being pals and what not, but this was something I couldn’t justify for myself I guess is the best way I can think of to put it. I was too invested in the show and its characters to just drop it at this point, so I went on with a “I don’t have to agree” kind of mindset. As their relationship progressed, I found myself delighted by how adorable they were together, and this was kind of when the flaws of my upbringing were shattered and I realized that being queer isn’t some perversion of things or morally wrong or anything like that, it’s just people wishing to be true to themselves and loving who they wish to however they wish to. The Owl House ultimately put me on the path to where I am today as last year I realized I was panromantic asexual, and am currently in my gender panic arc. It’s been a heck of a ride, but thanks to Dana Terrace for giving me a nudge in the right direction to finally starting to feel like myself ^_^

The Titan in Owl house is also technically intersex and/or hermaphroditic since it is implied that he is both the male and female parent of King. This would make titans operate like many real world species that have both sexes present and can chose to reproduce asexually or sexually with others of their species. Side note hermaphrodite is not used when discussing people as it can be a slur, but when discussing biological stuff the term is used with species that can fully reproduce with both sex organs. Intersex is what is used to describe people who display both male and female sex characteristics as there has never been a documented case of 'true hermaphroditism' in humans.

I would also like to add that the owl house ALSO has AMAZING neurodivergent representation. Primarily in Luz (confirmed neurodivergent, up to interpretation but largely regarded as having adhd). And as someone myself who has adhd (diagnosed) it is AMAZING. Like the way she is bullied and an outcast, no friends, anxious to talk to other people for fear of being bullied and not wanting to mask, it’s so accurate! Edit: I was focusing on the more negative aspects, but the creativity and “new angle” and impulsiveness are also amazing to see and I relate to just as much) Then there’s also Gus and Hunter (I believe Gus has autism and hunter has ptsd). It’s all handled so seriously, along with other mental health issues of people pleasing, grief, and depression. It’s just so well done and I probably wouldn’t have liked the show as much without it. P.S. (me and my sibling (who also has adhd AND autism (both diagnosed) we both think that Sprig has adhd and autism. His i attentiveness, hyperactivity, compulsiveness, and especially his sensory issues. How he wants to touch everything and in the movie theater couldn’t deal with the loud sounds, it’s exactly like my sibling (and me slightly but mostly my sibling). So although not spotlighted, I really appreciated that even if it’s not canon)

Another aspect of rep in amphibia more in line with the subtle hinting of older shows is that the staff of the show have gone on record saying that while they didn't confirm any particular relationship between the 3 main girls, that was more so not to upset shippers of the character left out of that. On top of that they added moments that could be interpreted as romantic chemistry between all three possible pairings, but left it at that for the aforementioned reason. The fandom however, instead of collapsing into a shipping war like was usual for television at the time, just decided the calamity trio was a polycule lol. (And even tho it's just implied it's done a lot of the same stuff for polyamorous people that the early implied queerness of the 2010s did for LGBT+ people.)

Representation is so important. I tick all three of the minority boxes in the video but my favorite bit of representation ever is in something I've never experienced. I think what makes representation in shows like Amphibia, Owl House, and so many other shows and movies work best is because we get a first hand look of the characters in their communities. While I’m not a member of the LGBTQ+ community or live in a background like Anne’s I like the representation not necessarily because it’s there(but I am glad it’s there and is very nice and even important and by no means am I trying to say it’s a bad thing, it’s far far from a bad thing)but because I care about the characters. Representation is a great thing but what makes it work so well is that the characters that are being represented are treated like well round three dimensional people just like everyone else. To me, it doesn’t matter what age, race, sexuality, or gender a character is or what’s being represented. Just as long as the background and characters in it are treated with respect and advance them as people for them to be relevant to the story(or even just in a casual way where the background and characters in it are seen as completely normal), it definitely earns my respect. And for Amphibia and the Owl House, both do that spectacularly well.

The LGBTQ+ has been stigmatized for so long, it's good seeing that media is starting to head into a new direction for a change! Especially in kid's media. Children growing up thinking that they're not normal for being who they are is detrimental on their minds. And it's shows like these that encourages kids to be brave, and most important to be them!

If you want to dive in to representation and look at how it used to be compared to how it is now, ask me. I'll be assembling a list soon and if you want to go over the list of shows together we can. I want to look at how it used to be vs how it is now. and I think that is what's important. Show characters who are different. Have them act normal. Win people over. Too many LGBT people and minorities want to be very in your face with rep and that makes that rep too ham fisted. It fails to work It If you want to win people over the characters need to feel normal and a lot of other shows made by main stream people play up the stereotypes of a thing they are not part of and that also gets it wrong. The representation feels corporately mandated and token or offensive then.
@RatBagel
@RatBagel Жыл бұрын
While I agree with your overall idea, I would like to say lgbt rep used to be very seldom and built on stereotypes a lot. The point of lumity is for it to be a good romance and for it to give lgbt people visibility instead of it being just two side characters getting into a relationship. If lumity was a straight couple I don't think it would seem as in your face, as it would just be seen as the norm. It would just be seen as a couple in the show. The biggest scene I can think of that was actually over the top was Luz coming out, but I honestly think that scene was a final "fuck you" to Disney. The tunnel of love was for comedic affect. The other lgbt characters in the show such as Raine are literally just existing and there is no possible way anybody could see that as over the top unless they were somewhat of a homophobe. I think lumity makes sense being over the top because it's a relationship between two main characters.

TOH also has some important Neurodivergent representation. Luz is confirmed to have ADHD and that was one of the main reasons she left to go to the Demon Realm and stayed there, because she was gonna be put into some camp thing because she was "different" to learn to focus, so she stayed in the Demon Realm because it doesn't matter if you are "weird" or not. Also it has a lot of Disability representation, like Eda's curse is done extremely well and important to the plot. I am glad that TOH does a lot to add representation to the show and make it important, they do it well and accurate too.

no she was sent to the summer camp to teach her burndories she brought spiders snakes and fire works being weird is okay but disrespecting burndories isnt yes it says think inside of the box but its only extratred because luz saw it as bad vee and the others were able to have fun at the camp and not change how they are

I can remember the moment very well when I watched the video about all Luz and Amity moments of The Owl House. This is the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX6acoVjmNZopNU And when I was watching this video, I felt many butterflies in my stomach. My heart was flooded with very strong spring feelings when I saw the love moments between Luz and Amity. Watching the enchantingly beautiful love moments between these two very attractive girls really makes me feel as though I am floating on pink clouds in the highest floors of heaven. I feel that way deep in my heart and soul. In fact, when I see the two girls kissing, it evokes strong feelings of happiness in me.

3:54 Honestly, I really didn't like Mr. X. Besides being too stereotypical, is really weird to put an insert of a real-life celebrity on a kids show like this. It's kinda like putting an insert of Schwarzenegger as Conan in "Sofia the First".

I’m apart of the Nero divergents community but I’m always asking these 2 question1 how is representation in media good thing? And 2 why when any kind of diversity is in a tv show or movie why dose it boil down to being considered woke or ends getting slammed for not having enough representation in a movie or tv show ? as I’m always asking these 2 questions.

Representation in media is a good thing as it shows other especially young child they aren't alone and that's their others out there like them, will help more people be aware different queer identities, ND disorders, different religions or ethnic groups ext ext and a lot of these points will help those who aren't in any of these minorities to be better allies it could also help de-stigmized ND disorders and teach more people about them this is a good thing as it could increase the number of people diagnosed so less people will grow up struggling without any help or accommodations, another good thing about this is less people will have hurtful views on ND people and they are less likely to vilianized people with these traits 2, because people are assholes. No matter what people will always find ways to hate on a show, movie, piece of media ext and call it "too woke" there is no avoiding this

it seems to me that the addition of such characters only inflames hatred: in countries where it is forbidden they are not shown, that is, the show shoots itself in the head, for example, russia, and there is a large market (although when sanctions do not really affect), ukraine (at one time this country saved Star vs. the Forces of Evil, which was very popular there, and more people watched it on the air than in the United States). adding LGBT representatives can be good, but not directly, although it’s better not to do this at all, otherwise everything will affect the rating exactly. remember gravity falls? they didn’t show this directly more than once, except perhaps the sheriffs, but even then they look like typical friends from Disney, like goofy and donald and what do we see? the show has a huge audience all over the world because they were shown everywhere. would it be worse without lgbt? No. would it be better with this? neither, and in terms of views there would be a loss what about the owl house? after the addition of LGBT everywhere, starting from the second season, they began to ban the owl house and instead of season 3 we have 3 4-minute episodes with poor graphics (look at how witches descend in the last episode, it's horrible) and in the same Ukraine it was never shown at all even with an amphibian, although the situation is better there, in Russia they simply made a man with Olivia's partner and they calmly showed season 3 there. although in Ukraine everything was banned from the second season. draw your own conclusions

I think the worst offender of all media when it comes to representation is the complete lack of diversity in ideas, which is especially true for these Disney cartoons. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if a character is cis, bi, gay, etc. since the entire point of representing that aspect of that character is to normalize it. There isn’t some moral point or interesting viewpoint beyond that. What truly makes a show interesting is the conflict of ideas, but what these shows really lack is any kind of nuance in ideas. They’re very black and white and while the main characters learn and grow, they never encounter another world view they’re forced to accept or learn from, the only other worldview they encounter is the wrong one that the villain holds. And even that worldview isn’t very clearly represented, which means that the protagonists’ opposition usually falls on the villains mischiefs rather than the villain’s evil worldviews that actually makes the villain evil. All in all, the main character and the rest of the cast share pretty much the same ideas and worldview. I would honestly love a show where people who are socially conservative, believe in objectivist moral philosophy, is a stoic, is a nationalist, religious, etc. are not just represented but also get to interact. And what also important is for that interaction to be woven into the story so it doesn’t come of as forced or even as filler (through really interesting filler). I think shows really reflect their creators. While they have a lot of LGBT people on the staff, they probably think very alike and they probably succumb to a lot of groupthinking, not in the development of the show but for the ideas presented in the show. There is probably very few socially conservative people on the staff that makes these shows, which means that they are rarely represented at all. That in turn probably leads to a lot of people who don’t already think exactly like the people who made the shows to be disengaged with the show as if it is actively ignoring them. But again, these shows are made for kids who don’t have a complete worldview to begin with. But I think this is still a big problem that exist within all of media, a lack of representation in ideas. I really hope will we more actual representation or else I think it will only lead to even more polarization and groupthinking.

I personally don't see representation as much of a big deal. Sure, it can be cool to see a character similar to you, and I'm not saying it should never happen. However, there are much more important elements to a story than that, and I'd rather have a good story with likeable characters who happen to represent someone than a bad story with characters where the only "redeeming" quality about both is that someone out there feels represented by them. What really kills representation for many is the fact that alot of companies use it as a shield for when peoole don't like or don't watch the show or movie. When you try to shove something down my throat, don't be surprised when I fight back. I also can't stand when established characters who already have their own story, look, and fanbase are changed because of this. You want someone to be represented so bad? Then do for them what was done for other represented characters in the past.

@@sadlynotacat Isn't "they, them" a plural, how do you say they if it's one person? ,,, Perhaps what determines what is a male or female is judged in several ways, some people think like this "we are all souls, and some of us have physical bodies to be in the physical world" I assume from how/what the soul is

@@tolvfeno they/them isn't necessarily plural as singular they/them have been used for centuries and I guarantee you have have them for one person before how you use it well simple "oh someone left THEIR water bottle here I hope THEY come and pick it up", "this is my best friend THEY used they/them pronouns, THEY are now in the our class" or "THEY ate lunch by THEMSELVES today" plenty examples of how to use singular they/them just stop being an asshole and respect pronouns it's not that difficult and costs nothing. Secondly nonbinary just means someone doesn't identify as either male or female it's not they aren't sure if their male or female they aren't neither the fact that "they don't seem to be sure about themselves" is because they are sure of themselves they know their nonbinary they just social anxiety which is nothing to do with them being nonbinary they just don't like large crowds and speaking in front of people
