I love this movie because you can follow EXACTLY how they turn from the characters at the start to the ones at the end. You can see how D-16's aggressiveness turns into Megatron's violence, and how Orion Pax's pluck turns into Optimus Prime's leadership. I only wish it was 2 hours so the High Guard could get more scenes.

I have always been mixed on Cars 2 rather than straight up hating it. I was obsessed with the original, as well as the tie-in video game, tho that fixation slowly began to fade by the time Cars 2 rolled around to contentious reception. Again I enjoyed and to this day respect the original Cars, for what it is it actually has a pretty mature and surprisingly complex story that in any other medium with actual human characters would be championed as something special. ..Cars two by contrast is imo a very simple film, with a fairly paint by numbers plot you can see from a mile away, and lacks a lot of that maturity the original Cars had. ..All said, it's an incredibly fun film, --in premise alone it's ridiculous; a James Bond style spy film, but set in the Cars universe using the Cars characters. I can see the train of logic, from spy cars to a Cars film about cars that are spies, but it still feels amusingly absurd. Mater getting wrapped up in it as opposed to McQueen, or the two as a duo is also an interesting twist akin to Pink Panther or Johnny English that leads to all kind of amusing or creative situations. It's not the sequel to Cars I would've asked for, or would've expected, ..but I'm not sure honestly how I would follow up the first film given the opportunity. Overall it's a fun ride, but I also get why it doesn't sit with people. And if nothing else, the Pope being made canon to Cars through this film is hysterical. --Like do the Cars have their own version of the bible? Are the characters within the cars bible humans, or are they cars? Did car Jesus turn gasoline into nitro fuel? Was car Jesus crucified on a cross? Did they prophesize there would be a cars rapture? Re-donkulous, and we have this movie to thank for all of this absurdity.

If someone watched anakin (clone wars) then anakin (RotS) then they wouldve felt the same way about D16-Megatron. The underlying 'turn-to-evil' is there. Couldve been to quick or not, is subjective.

I don’t get people who say it doesn’t have emotional depth. The scene where Finn was talking about how Mater acts stupid that leads into Mater saying it wasn’t an act in the clocktower is really emotional. To this day, I can remember Mater yelling and how the words echoed in that space. I remember it as this gut-wrenching moment because Mater has been looked down on the entire movie, and for a moment, he considers himself just a stupid joke, too.

I feel like this argument mostly just boils down to "I like this movie. Full stop." The arguments' evidence is purely SUBJECTIVE and not OBJECTIVE which is not a great deffense. I'm not saying you can't like the movie because it is not objectively good, you are in your right to enjoy the movie and no one else is in their right to change your mind and vice versa. OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING - this movie is subpar at best. But SUBJECTIVITY is an entirely different kind of argument. Me personally, I don't hate Cars 2. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Let's just say that Cars 2 is one of my least revisited Pixar movies of all time. But I agree in saying that it's not terrible. (That honour goes to The Good Dinosaur). The movie has some great action and I really do think the idea of some conspiracy surrounding car fuel is a creative one. That being said, it doesn't really add onto the themes too much of the first movie nor does it progress Lightning's or Mater's characters in a major way. And Mater is just kind of annoying in this movie... I just think Cars 2 is a poor sequel to Cars 1. I think Cars 2 would have worked BETTER as a spinoff movie. Here's what I'd do to change Cars 2. Keep the two plots, one about Lightning and Mater and the other about the spy cars trying to uncover a conspiracy surrounding the World Grand Prix. I would also take Mater OUT of the spy plotline entirely and replace him with a new rookie spy where this is his first assignment under the guidance of Finn McMissle. This rookie spy initially approaches the mystery with arrogance, but learns quickly the severeity of the situation. Where Lightning's story in the first film was to learn how to take life slowly and appreciate the value in it that isn't just seeking glory and admiration from others, this new rookie spy would learn about the responsibilities of having such a high status and how to take accountability for mistakes. If you really wanna keep Mater in the film in a semi-major role, perhaps the rookie spy and Mater could have a segment where this rookie has to trust a bumbling idiot to help him accomplish his goal which could give the rookie spy a new insight on people who may not be a fully-fletched spy, but are intelligent and powerful in other ways. But, again, I think this would work better as a SPINOFF MOVIE and not a true successor to the first Cars. Essentially, just get rid of the "2" in Cars 2 and add "Spy" before cars, making it "SPY CARS" or something like that. We got Spy Kids and Spy Cars XD

I understand this perspective, however i disagree with a few points. I am glad that they mentioned the fact that characters do not have to be relatable, I'm also glad that they mentioned the extent of the expectations that fell short and the fact the animation was stunning. saying that however i had a few gripes with some of the points made. 1. Plot rohan mentioned that the plot was very enjoyable, clear and concise. In my opinion, the plot was very messy and lacked clear motives from the antagonist. miles axelrod wanted to make alternative fuels look bad by making race cars using the substance blow up upon using it. as a kid, I'm not sure about how others experienced the movie but it honestly took me till my 3rd or 4th watch of the movie to actually understand why miles would do that, and even now i question why he thought that would work, if anything, he's just promoting cars to be electric, if alternative fuel is bad, and fossil fuels killed the dinosaurs then why would the public choose fossil fuels...? the rest of the plot also just feels like action for the sake of action and if were being honest could have excluded mater entirely and made more sense. the fact the spys believe mater is a spy is a huge stretch, McQueen facing an F1 and being even with it is unrealistic in itself for moterheads watching, the world were placed in is very confusing and there are scenes where the bad guys could have killed the spys like the big ben scene that feel meaningless. the fact holly can fly and there technology can do basically anything is really random, i could go on... 2. Emotional depth i seriously don't know what rohan meant by there being emotional depth, it is such a shallow message and barely gets any focus, the closest it gets to emotion is when McQueen is yelling at mater. i have to admit that had some emotion in the vocals, nonetheless the climax to this message, where McQueen apologises to mater is over shadowed by the spy stuff, we never get to delve on emotion properly or take a moment to absorb a scene, and the emotion in the actual colour theory and music score just don't hit the mark in my opinion. compare this to cars 3, if you somehow get through the scene in smokeys garage without going silent and being fully absorbed, or to some extent getting a tear, you must be emotional developed in a very different direction to me haha. In cars 1 the score alone where McQueen and sally drive through the waterfall trumps any emotion cars 2 gives me, that scene serves so much of the movies message without saying anything, its quite literally poetry in motion. Considering I've watched all these movies an unhealthy amount of times and i cant think of any scenes from cars 2 that give me chills is concerning for rohans point on emotional depth. 3. world expansion this is just a minor nit pick, Rohan mentioned that the world building was great. i don't necessarily disagree fully, however i feel the world building served a huge problem for the franchise. in cars 1 and cars 3, we see segments of the world that don't really make us think which sounds bad, but is actually really good. a world full of sentiant cars is fundamentally flawed, it makes no sense where they come from or how they function, however in cars 1 and 3 we don't really think about that, however at least to me, cars 2 made me just question the universe so much it took a bit of the believability out of the movie. I'm not sure how others felt about that, but that's just my personal thoughts. 4. Characters and mater i don't know if rohan mentioned this very much, but the characters in cars 2, due to there dilouge mainly just feel soooo... bland, McQueen just has no personality, fin mcmissile is actually so stupid if you think about it, holly just feels unrealistic and boring and mater is heavily over done. the scene in cars 3 where McQueen calls mater, that's how mater should have acted during cars 2 for him to actually be a good character, mater is not stupid, he was never explicitly stupid in cars 1, just a bit silly and loud, but not annoying and socially inept. in cars 1 and 3, he's patient, loyal and actually actually funny, not just lol random. the pistachio ice cream scene can be funny to some, but honestly compare it to in cars 1 where he said "you owe me 32 thousand dollars in legal fees" and tell me that's not funnier. conclusion: thanks for reading this far if you bothered. At the end of the day if you enjoy the film that's fine, its a fun movie and if that's good enough for you that's great! for someone that enjoys movies because of the emotional depth, for visual metaphores, colour theory, deep dialogue and just want to feel something from this amazing art form that make our monkey brains feel all tingly and utterly change our neurological pathways, its most likely not quite a mature enough movie for those viewers haha.

Here's another reason why Cars 2 is so overhated (and the whole Cars franchise in general), is because people for some reason can't take anthropomorphic vehicles seriously, and treat it as a kids thing. But for some reason those same people can take anthropomorphic toys seriously (Toy Story), a kids thing that's actually a kids thing.

And I really loved it, and it became my favorite cars movie. you should have seen my surprise when I learned years later that people didn't like it. This movie was always a really good watch imo and I loved it as a kid, seeing this in cinema when I was young was awesome I know it was toned down a bit, but I still like the darker atmosphere this movie had going for it too even if it was an odd sequel in comparison to the first Cars film. If you haven't seen some of the deleted scenes, they're actually kinda brutal and interesting, I'd recommend looking into them. I know people trash on Cars 2 a lot, and I get it from some points, but I think as it's own standalone thing it really shines, I reckon it would've done better if not treated like a sequel but rather a spin off movie. Also Finn McMissile's oil rig escape sequence was peak, and of course Giacchino had to score his theme for it I'm convinced Giacchino can't physically compose a bad song for any movies he scores for even if he tried.

One thing I would like to point out is how for D-16's "Villain's" Journey, Starscream is a better fit for the Old Mentor figure than Alpha Trion. D-16 take's Starscream's "might (cog) makes right" philosophy whereas Orion takes Trion's "spark is what matters not cog," philosophy

Mabel is the supposed ‘lovable dummy’, but can also make smart decisions as well.
