Its funny, its a show set in a world of demons and monsters, yet to me one of its greatest strenghts of the show is how...wholesome and loveable it is. The show never feels...cynical to me, decpite the sarcastic jokes. Maybe its cause Luz is such an optimistic bundle of joy which sets the tone of the show as a whole idk but its something I love. There are serious moments, disturbing shit, genuine villians, important messages, sarcastic humour. But the world doesnt just feel heavy or hopeless. Its frankly amazing. For the record im not saying there is anything wrong with heavy moments, far from it. But the shows general tone just has this optimistic feel too it and frankly right now thats incredibly welcome.
@linesinmotion4 жыл бұрын
This is also another really good perspective on the show, it always has this hopeful feel about it which is so infectious and leaves you finishing every episode wanting more of this bundle of joy main character (except maybe the ending of episode 18 haha!) Things go wrong for Luz all the time, she messes up a spell or she gets caught up in something she probably shouldn't, but it's so entertaining to watch because of that optimism and ... realistic? reactions she gives.. Any other young girl would be terrified travelling into a hell realm, but Luz absolutely loves the place!
@Tintelinus4 жыл бұрын
@@linesinmotion Luz messes up a lot and can get both herself and others into trouble. But she very rarely if ever does it out of malice, she just doesnt think it through which I think makes it endearing rather than annoying. Plus as someone with ADHD god can I relate to fumbling into a mess with no ill intentions Xb.

This. I've noticed a running trend with animation aimed at a slightly older crowd trying to assure their viewers that their work "isn't for little kids" leaning way too hard into mean spirited humor, "tropes are bad" writing that seems to try to be "smarter" than its genre is purely through lampshade hanging and insulting other genre works and bleak - yet shallow - world building. Now you can totally make a good show that is dark and cynical in its writing and world building...but "dark" doesn't automatically equal "mature" and, when everyone's output seems so similar, it's really nice to have something with *actual* mature themes and subjects that doesn't treat itself like it needs to be grimdark and meanspirited to cover them.
@philly_sports15582 жыл бұрын
I agree. So much heart and wholesomeness is provided Luz being such a lovable protagonist.
@chefboiarby3042 жыл бұрын
@@812558 That reminds me of Amazon Prime's "The Boys." It's a show that is a satire both of modern day American culture as well as the superhero genre. It definitely tries to be clever and edgy while carrying a very cynical tone throughout with lots of very dark moments, and yet it feels very refreshing and enjoyable. I think a big part of this is that the show has an ensemble of compelling characters and develops them very well.

The Owl House's comedy has always landed sweet spot after sweet spot in my heart, and I couldn't agree more of how much of a joy it is to watch because of well.... everything. It builds on the foundations of what makes a good fantasy and teen story, and just executes these so well. But most of all, I'm a straight guy but it is SUCH a blessing that this generation of kids get to have this in their childhood and teach them about gender identity. The greatest thing I will always appreciate about this show, is how it depicts Luz and Amity's relationship and how normal (as if high school romances are ever normal) it is just to fall in love and be in love. I so wish my generation had a Disney show to tell us that something like this isn't just okay but is also completely normal.

The thing I was excited about Miraculous Ladybug's Chloe for was the lesson you don't see in kids shows that bullies are people too, and that even bullies can change. The speculation to her becoming a hero was that she would eventually start to become nicer and all the bad things about are explained in a way that you see why she's nasty, how she could be a better person, but the handling of her character pails in comparison to Amity. Both of these characters have parents that are elite, and both of them are mistreated emotionally by at least one parent (For Amity it's both), and both have a moral compass that is hidden behind their need to be the best, and carry that they are better than others. But where as Amity starts seeing how she effects people and changes for the better, Chloe is written off as irredeemable by her own writers and pushed to be worse because they say she can't be a better person. I fell in love with both of these shows equally fast, but only one of them has the talent to actually go places and keep the characters interesting and more than two dimensional. I wanted ML to tell children that even bullies can change, and maybe they aren't little monsters. But The Owl House not only does it better, but with more realism, which is funny because it's a cartoon about magic and fantasy.

The Owl House feels so much like a dearly loved project by everyone involved. The world building and consistency building is amazing even with all the chaos and seemingly crazy monsters and magic going on in the show. Something many shows fail at is hitting the right notes of what are limits and possibilities which quickly deflate any moment of tension or drama. Every episode feels alive. The characters feel like people who were observed and written about. It's seriously an amazingly well done show and I love it.

Ok, I only needed this video to suscribe to your channel. Amazing, REAAAAALLY amazing editing, joined to a very well put explanation to everything (the fact that you put subtitles to the interviews helps me a lot, because im not english native) and the fact that is very obvious you know your stuff. On a side note, i like that actually you put the names of not only the main director, but also the writers. They deserve love too! Keep up the good work.

I absolutely love Eda, so spunky and very lively. She's the best character to me in this show, and what tops it off is that her VA was also in Bojack Horseman as Bojacks mother. It's so jarring to hear both characters with the same voice :0

Eda is SO funny, the show would not be the same without her snark and snorty laugh!
@Hi_Names_Nat2 жыл бұрын
This is such a good summary of why I love the show, but I think there's so much more that could potentially be talked about in season two. The show's jump to being more serialized, the representation of trans and non-binary characters in Raine, the way Luz and Amity's romantic relationship is written to be so much more grounded, real and sweet, giving us (imo) the best LGBTQ relationship in all of western cartoons so far, and the way the plot ducks and weaves around itself in incredibly brilliant ways that hint at the show being written much more for older audiences. All fantastic things that could be deep-dived, this show has absolutely so much to reflect on and appreciate about it.

I was so closed minded about watching other Animated shows aside from Steven Universe. Because SU was (and still is) my favorite show of all time and I never believed there could be a show as good if not better than SU. But then... The Owl House came along... Something... Happened when I saw this show. It's just... A way of life for me now. And I adore this show and came to realize that I can always have multiple favorites of anything! Cartoons, Movies, Games, etc! And as of right now... Steven Universe & The Owl House are my 2 favorite cartoon shows of ALL TIME! Heck not even cartoon shows! Best shows for me of all time! (Hilda & Avatar are pretty close tho) So much that I'll make a video about it soon. I enjoyed this video and hope to see more from you! Cartoons are my life! I breath animation everyday! There's one element they borrowed from X-Men that works brilliantly. One thing X-Men writers discovered quickly is that Wolverine is the most unlikely possible father figure, so if you put him in circumstances in which he's forced to act as a father figure to someone, the result is awkward, cute, funny, charming, and touching. Eda from Owl House borrows this beautifully. She's more or less the last person on Earth you would want acting as a surrogate mother figure for an impressionable teen, and the result works the same as when Logan does it in the X-Men.

What's amazing me from this show is how they were able to recreate a gravity falls vibe but at the same time being 100 miles away from it. Saison 1 was a grate opening for a new show because of how captivating episodes are getting the more we are watching it. But i feel like we missed a lot of thing that happened like we're does Hulu come from, Luz family, and others. Saison 2 is really doing great to solve that and I really hope that they will fully fixe it at the end of saison 2.
