As a pagan and also an archaeologist myself 😃 - thank you for making this video! We're worshipping the Gods from times past, but we're not worshipping those exact understanding of them as caught up in an image from centuries or millennia ago. Living Divines, not beautiful statues! ❤️

This is why I keep my experiences to myself, for the most part. My experiences in Norse Paganism differ quite a bit from others. Other pagans talk about dreams, signs, even speech from the gods. I've never experienced this, firsthand. If I feel anything from the gods at all, it's just a feeling or urge. Example, Hel was the first deity I felt anything from. I set up a small altar to Hel and included my mother's ashes. She didn't want a Christian burial. However, I failed. I had to work very late that whole week. I missed the time I wanted to work with Hel. I went to bed sad and tired. I woke up just a few hours later. I was wide awake and felt an urge to go back to the altar. I can't describe the feeling any more than "NOW ". No voice, though. After working with Her, I felt satisfied, content, happy and very tired.

You make great points as always, dear Arith. Some people act as if there was one single, traditional way of handling things, of worshipping, of believing,... that got lost, and we have to recreate exactly that way of living, or else everything we do is wrong. But beliefs and customs change with time; every old religion that is still alive today, changed with times, too. The perception of their God(s) changed, and so did their customs. The Heathen Ways may have been interrupted, lots of things may have been lost, but we can still practice, draw from the past into the present and move into the future.

Solid stuff. So glad to hear it said. The work ahead is not to try to go back to the past. In fact, that's the slow death of conservatism -- clinging to the past when it's no longer what's appropriate. The past is a collection of circumstances that simply no longer exist the same way. We can never have it quite like that again, for better or worse. Instead, we're always choosing and forming our present culture and worldview -- rituals and deities included -- informed by the wisdom from the past, based on the circumstances and experiences of the present, and toward our intentions for the future.

Thank you Arith, for this video, your hard work, your wish to share UPG with the world. Whilst I understand UPG only too well, so much in my personal belief system is at least partially based there, I feel that often not enough work is carried out to find the links to the past, find the Goddesses and Gods we want or ought to venerate to express our particular needs, desires and love for the world we exist in. Far too often I hear the call to bring in spiritual beings of other belief systems, as the beings equal to the task within our own beliefs are not recognised, understood or valued. Too often I hear of fairies in the garden within the Germanic belief systems community, when we ought to be talking about the veneration of wights, land or house, solely due to the lack of research. Who in the Heathen world these days has a connection to Gefjon, or even heard of the Goddess? If the spiritual connection we feel is not in the top 5 Gods, let's invent a new one, because Google doesn't give us the info in the first 3 listings? I feel, especially you Arith, with your academic background and working in a field where academic work is so much requirement, I was surprised you left out much of the suggestion to do research once we experience something spiritual and mystical, to which we cannot immediately find a link. As I said, much of my belief system has UPG linked in, and is still so after researching sources, or at times disagreeing with them due to my understanding that certain verified and shared belief information to me is deliberate xtian misinformation, like in the case of Baldr's resurrection after Ragnarök, the use of the word 'ergi', which would have applied from the conversion period onwards, but I cannot see this applying prior to the arrival of xtianity, considering that one of the main Gods, Ōðinn, the Alfóðr, was a practitioner of Seiðr, and known to wear the ritual clothing required.

Definitely agree that UPG is central to spiritual practice, but there’s also something to be said for keeping alive cultural and spiritual traditions and passing them on. It creates a continuity with both past and future which can be very anchoring in a world full of displacement, oppression, corrupt people trying to force you to be what they want, etc.

This is why I prefer Eclectic Paganism to Reconstructionist Paganism. Why try to perfectly recreate the practices and beliefs of a dead culture of which limited information remains? If various past cultures have had their own experiences with entities, then it only makes sense to draw inspiration from many different forms of Paganism in accordance with your own UPGs.

Especially lot of ancient Pagan spirituality is dead and not many information survives for our modern time. Many time is impossible to recreate dead religious practices of the past and gods that exist in particular culture and ancient people experiences of gods and goddesses.

THIS is just what I needed to hear. On my path I have encountered 'deities' that I cannot find in books, or history and as such I have questioned my experience. I have become confused and tried to make these deities fit into the roles of other more well known deities, to no avail. Even though I have been pagan for most of my life, I have still been too 'new' to understand the concept of my own personal pantheon, and that our personal pantheons have meaning and validity, beyond what we can validate in the material realm through study of the past. Even our Norse ancestors didn't have specific ways of honoring the gods, and different peoples from different regions worshipped in different ways. I feel like you just 'gave me permission' to explore this further, and to honor my personal deities even if they differ from those of our ancestors. Thank you so very much!!!

Just be careful of trickster spirits. Learn about them and watch out for them. They're the greatest danger on this path, and you can't recognize them AT ALL until you realize they're lying about something or have deceived you in other ways. But I will say I live on formerly Native American land and it's full of nameless entities they left behind. Sharing UPG with like minded people cannot be underestimated I think. We all have unique perspectives and experiences. I find that some of the experiences I had when 'sitting out' in order to get answers on behalf of other persons, were not always directly clear to me. I needed the perspective of another traveller to get my messages clearer. Also in order to grow and learn about communication and interaction with other-than-human beings, the perspective and UPG of others is sometimes crucial. When an individual enters the realm of 'the Other', how can one understand and communicate safely? Not everything can be cannonized, cathegorized and standardized in books. The merit of UPG is fluidity and exactly that: direct personal gnosis correlating between two - or more - unique individuals to shine more lights and insights among each other without the critique/opinion of distant 'leading experts' or whatever I should call them. Knowledge like this is, in my opinion, never a 'one way' thing and worth-less without sharing in a personal setting

New experiences with a different Mind in this modern age. As a Pantheist, I connect with the green man. I feel it’s a part of me inside me. Not an entity separate from me. Though I don’t talk to myself or see visions of this symbolic entity, I feel it may be a UPG, a reinterpretation of this ancient god in a personal way, as a personal experience. With the threat of climate change looming, I feel this is a very important “spirit” of The present time. We need a new myth or spiritual awakening that is real and alive. Not an old misinterpreted religion that we blindly accept due To societal conditioning. It is hard not to be shaped by our own personal experiences. We are in this world, and as such, develop an understanding of how we view this world, through collective consciousness or personal discovery of having actually lived through events and experiences that shape and mold our perspectives. It is often said, that you can acquire the knowledge of the world, without having become wiser for doing so. Our minds create a powerful belief structure, based on what we have absorbed through our life. As time passes, and we have had the time to digest the now immense files stored in our brains, it becomes a matter of sorting through these files, and placing them in there appropriate compartmentalized storage space. And of course as we accumulate more files, and process more data, more storage space will be necessitated, and that to will be compartmentalized into it's appropriate space. Ever so often we have a chance to sort through our files, and reorganize them, or even choose to entirely delete them. We are living ,breathing ,organic beings capable of incredible worth and knowledge..if we only open our files, and experience all that life has to offer. Expanding Knowledge.

I really appreciate the message in this video. UPG is a sizeable part of my own practice. I can appreciate VPG where it exists, but unless it contributes meaningfully to my own practice, it's of little use. My path is my own - it's certainly colored and inspired by my predominant tribal lineage, but I don't live in a culture of the past. Nor do I believe deity, spirit, or ancestors do. If "as above, so below" is true, they've been evolving as well - so I don't see the utility in trying to reconstruct something for which few if any written records exist. I prefer to go forward with an open, receptive awareness and build for myself a practice that makes sense to my own life journey. The only one who needs to verify anything is myself - so for my part, I just refer to it as Personal Gnosis and don't presume to tell anyone else how to practice their own beliefs.

I love this. I think it's also important to remember that we continuously "reshape" the popular gods everyday through our own practices. I believe this happens much since everyone draws from and gives specific energies to them. As a result he same goddess or gods worshipped by our ancestors may indeed carry a very different energy today. At least speaking from my own experiences...

Thanks so much for this video! Modern dismissal of UPG is the equivalent of shooting ourselves in the foot. The reason 12 step programs keep people sober is because the programs allow for and encourage UPG. This is the only system the modern West has ever come up with that embraces UPG, although within the programs those who do not understand this are quick to shut down and discredit any UPG, which causes people to eventually relapse. (36 years of recovery; no relapses; am a professional addiction recovery coach with hospital experience.) Archaeology and history are GREAT for helping us understand our UPGs! I study these subjects all the time and would be quite lost without their enlightenment. The New World Order is Malthusian, so it will set a high priority on squelching creativity and UPG. Western art and spirituality is in big trouble, probably more so than ever before. Those "past gods" never went away. The collective unconscious has maintained them.

Sometimes you can combine science and spirituality. For example, most of my 20s has been in nursing field. So i learned alot about human biology, psychology etc. Now im more so in the office setting but i also am into herbal medicine and egyptian energy healing. With my knowledge of human biology helps with energy healing regarding chakras and humans' energetic bodies as well. Im still learning but its all coming together. (Edit) Also learning about the physical healing properties of plants and herbs and their metaphysical properties. 🙂. Ive also noticed too that theres alot of similar experiences amongst entities as well. Thats why online we can find accepted information on certain entities for example, it seems alot of people that work with Anubis describe him as very stern and that seems to be the experience with lots of people. Alot of people say Ares comes with high energy. So theres our own UPG but also an accepted collective UPG for certain entities. 🙂
@janelarson7065

I am also on the energy healing/plant medicine path. But what I've found is that a LOT of modern people connect with only the collective unconscious world thinking it is the actual spirit world. It is not. When you meet an entity in this world, it is not the real deal but the current collective idea of the entity. This is why so many modern seidrs think Asgard looks like the Marvel movies and that Thor is blonde and lacks a beard! This is what they "see" when they journey. But they are not journeying to the right location, maybe because the spirits they think are their guides are actually tricksters. Spirit work is VERY VERY VERY tricky, it can get you killed, which is why I wish there were good accurate sources for working with spirits safely and properly. There are none available; maybe Abramelin is best but is missing things. I've also come across many black magicians masquerading as medicine shamans. You can identify them by their narcissism and dogmatism.

@@janelarson7065 That's all the more reason that Jesus and His power in miracles and answering prayers is superior and safer to what any other spiritual entity could ever offer. You just have to accept that God's will to be done instead of yours without His permission and most importantly, accept His free gift of salvation of His grace through repentant faith in what He did to fully pay your sin debt. Witchcraft is a shadow counterfeit of the real answered prayers and miracles from God. God only gives good things, He will never hand you a scorpion when you ask for bread .

I think it's important to share UPG's with others for them to focus on them, for scrutiny, for digging deeper, for separating what is bullshit in them and what's the kernel of truth. This should only be done when one feels a strong urge to do it though. Even then it's somewhat dangerous. Impatient immature prejudiced people can tear you apart for saying the wrong stuff. They can even lock you up, drug you, kill you. Anything to stop them from having to do their own shadow work.

I appreciate your point of view. My view is that humans trying to understand the unknowable, invent deities. Often these deities express archetypes and our experiences, spiritually. My relationship with deities is real, it is my way to communicate with the ALL. My gnosis is based on Hermetic Principles, which parallels scientific ideas about reality. But my spirituality is mine. Not better than any other. Hence, I appreciate deities from many pantheons. I gain knowledge from the past, but I don't think it can be accurately reproduced. If you accept religious ideas are a cultural invention, it follows that we too can invent our own relationships with "deities ". PS. I'm becoming a Patron member just because of your talk.

It's true, there's always that possibility. Some people lie and/or are dishonest for a variety of reasons, and there's also the cases of mental illness. However, as stated on the previous video ("My First Contact with Paganism - Believe in a Belief") we cannot immediately be suspecious and assume people are lying to us. Some people do have certain experiences and try to express them as best as possible in order for others - who have not had such experiences - to understand. Of course, we must not be naive and blindly believe, and we should be wary, cautious at least. However, our first approach to these cases should be to listen and be attentive to what is being told, and not immediately doubt or discard the cases, or indeed trying to avoid a condescending/patronizing approach and assume it's not true at a first glance.

okay - i'll admit i had to look this up before watching the video. Now i really get it. this was so helpful, or rather encouraging. i have never found that i could relate to other groups, shall i say those centred around a 'set of ideas' - and only those. that's okay for those who need that. I found that the amazing and random in my life has taught me so much more, and led me to try to learn to trust instinct and so forth.

@ernststravoblofeld

I think the point where religion goes wrong, is where stories and dogma become more important than experience. The stories and rituals have value in themselves, but the personal experience is the real stuff. When you give up on experience, you're just taking other people's word for it all. You're not being guided at that point - you're being led.

Psychoanalisys goes a bit like this as well...it doesn't matter if a experience was true, dreamt or percieved, as long as it left an impact on that mind, it's subject to psychoanalitical work. Likewise, it doesn't really matter the real meaning a word (the social shared meaning) but what that word means for that specific person.....and it's upon this that the psychoanalitical technique is developed (as for Freud and Lacan)

I keep thinking back to a quote i heard in a vid from Anette Höst “Tradition is the keeping of the fire, not the worship of the ashes” and while we are bot talking about traditions i think the idea of this quote can be passed on to a lot of concepts I feel it is impossible for energies/entities now to still be exactly as they once where so many years ago If they where, they would be static ,

In some sense it's like the creation of a new word: it always begin by one person. But for it to be a dictionaryzed word it has to be accepted by others - the social realm...it has to be a common symbol. The thing is that a word you create can be very useful even if you are the only one who uses it (scientists do this when they just create a new term and starts using it), it can engulf and gather a shade of meaning or a perspective of a concept that is very useful for you. Should you don't use it because it's not shared? It may be shared one day - some words just catch on and became popular very quickly. But a word you create is bounded to the others since it's a word in a language and it follows the rules of THAT language (phonetics and phonotatics) (so the new word is indirectly a social product that was possible by the creativity of that specific individual); in the same way UPG is also embeded in a cultural paradigm the person lives in (that individual creatively interpreted an experience based on THAT cultural framework)...as long as you create a concept and gives it the form a word it's already a subjetive reality, it doesn't need to be aproved by others....in the same way UPG as he has eleganty explained.

I've had this idea that maybe humanity keeps recreating the same scenarios over and over again because we keep reading the same scriptures over and over. So I thought maybe we should try creating and writing something new. A new narrative. New archetypes. New consciousness. A new story line.

I came to this same realization a year or two ago, after many years of trying to follow the spiritual choices of others, now and in the past. Like my views weren't just as legitimate as any other. I know better now but most don't want to hear it. They just want to follow.

The French philosopher Michel Maffesoli tells the post-modern sensibility is more sensorial then rational and that this visceral (rather than cerebral) approach of the experience of the world is of extreme importance in the acquisition of an ecosophy (the wisdom of inhabiting this oikos) instead of the usual economy. The neo-paganist zeitgeist, according to him, is what will save humanity from its own hybris. Congrats on your thoughts.

The problem that I have is that if I can't convince someone else that I indeed experienced X that must be interpreted as religious, I have trouble believing it myself. And regarding imagination, as a writer, I value that experience, but I also have to keep in mind that imagination can create many worlds, not all of which are real.

How about shared visions where a number of people have substantially the same UPG--say with a large crowd seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary? Technically, all experience is subjective--this is the riddle of Relativity. However, if multiple people share with each other substantially the same experience then the experience becomes objective (i.e., objective experience is always synthetic), which is why science requires reproducibility. So, unverified personal [or subjective] gnosis sits alongside unverifiable objective gnosis where the event is not reproducible, but more than one person shares the experience.

The problem with a lot of UPG is it's taught as original. Folks project it onto those of the past. This causes confusion, and spreads falsehoods. It would be different if folks would share their UPG and call it that. However a lot don't or they find something and project on all modern reconstruction/revivalists. They mix traditions and paths or put in new ones. Folks also tend to revive old words or use modern ones and project what they are into ancient peoples. I would agree UPG is very import but folks need to start acknowledging their paths as new age and or reconstruction and stop acting like they are practicing the same as our ancestors and not use it to attack others who UPG does not match their own. I would argue a lot of folks look to the past for foundation. Folks want something to build off of as justification or stability. They are building off something that was, there fore it's real.

I love your thesis. I’ll also point to the creation of these actual massively known historic figures that deified themselves or had their persona wrapped closely in the folds of a deity or their own divine power. Where would they be without UPG? Without Imagination? Nowhere. Just another carbon copy cookie cutter in a world of replicas. We ourselves have the power of the Cosmos to become as the stars in the night sky my friends.

But what if I'm also interested in your own personal experience? I think many are. Objective facts can be found out if someone digs patiently enough, but personal experience is unique. I understand that in that case this channel would change the point, but my favourite videos of this channel aree the ones where you also involve real personal experience. And it's not just about you - also in general. This doesn't mean that you HAVE TO do smth now - I'm just sayin. In school I mostly remember info that's been presented along with personal story - it connects more.
