The Importance of Wearing Helmets when Flying a Helicopter

One of our pilots whilst flying an H125 hit a pocket of turbulence so severe that his helmet struck the door frame windshield post on the right side with enough force to crack his helmet. Such a blow could very well have rendered the pilot unconscious had he not been wearing the helmet. The consequences of an unconscious pilot in flight would be fatal to the four passengers on board. Since then I have used this example when asked why I wear a helmet and then I drop the tinted visor and say with a smile that it’s also a very cool pair of sunglasses. Cheers and safe flying.

It differs from brand to brand, but in my case with a Gentex helmet it's ten years. After that the electrical components can still be used but the shell will have to be replaced.

I'm curious how the bird got in the cockpit if it didn't break through the window? Also as a passenger I'd be wondering why there wasn't an extra helmet on board for me.

Helicopter windscreens are typically not ballistic rated so in the event of a bird strike it's not uncommon that they'll go straight through. Helicopter helmets are really expensive and not one-size-fits all so it'd be hard to justify keeping a bunch around for passengers. Bluntly, if a passenger gets smacked in the face and knocked out it isn't going to kill everyone onboard.

Pilots bro. To spread the idea that helmets should be an investment
