Some potential insight on why female animations don't have cancel windows. Almost all of the c0000.esd active state 0 (player idle) is coded with special input checks that are usually labeled like "IsLeftHandAttackFromIdle()" or "IsParryFromIdle()" These checks differ from the rest of the active state checks which are labeled "IsLeftHandAttackFromCancel()" or "IsParryFromCancel()" The input checks that are labeled with "FromIdle" (or some variation like that) don't actually care whether or not there is a cancel window and will just happen. This is because From probably decided that "Well... the idle state should probably always be cancelable so let's just make it work that way in the ESD and not worry about cancel windows at all" In the case of the item dupe bug I guess it was just an oversight and they forgot to apply that change there. Source - I've written a lot of ESD lol

Reminds me of how in Titanfall 1 playing as a female was advantageous as the hitbox matched the 3d model and female pilots are smaller than male pilots and the movement/wall-running animations made female pilots a harder target to hit. This happened because they didn't initially plan on having female pilots in the game and added them last minute so they didn't have time to make a custom hitbox that matched the male pilot's as well as match the male pilot's animations.

Another size related thing is in the Elder Scrolls games. Taller characters run faster, because they have longer legs. At first I didn't understand why the female character's quicker slow down would be bad. It seemed like it would make your character more responsive, and anyway you could just run for an extra few frames so that you stop in the same spot, but save a frame or two in the process. But I'm guessing it has to do with stamina usage. Any time you stop sprinting, you slow down, and a male character has a slower slow down, and thus maintains their higher speed for longer. You're not slowing down because you intend to stop, but because you've run out of stamina and can't sprint any longer. Over the course of a run, this could add up to a few seconds.

Animation Blending is responsible for the difference in acceleration/deceleration. Blending also happens to effect root motion, so when it comes to transitioning from another animation under less motion, the smaller the blending window on the new animation the better. This applies in DeS, DS1, DS3, and Sekiro as they all have their animation systems designed similarly. The ESD/Beh(For DS3/Sekiro) can also effect root motion with conditional movement speed modifiers and transition speeds.
@catalystz2 жыл бұрын
I see! Thanks a lot of clearing this up, Amir. I knew about acceleration/deceleration memes also being present in DeS in a strong capacity, but had no idea that they did not adjust things in DS3 and Sekiro. I am also aware that there is a different number of frames saved depending on which animations are following the speed-up and what angle you might turning at.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason for the difference in movement speed transition for female characters seems obvious to me if female characters didn't get cancel animation transitions like male ones did. The speed change curve for male characters looked smoother, while the one for female characters looked sharper/more abrupt. I'm guessing that's due to the presence or absence of the cancel animation transitions. Male characters likely have smoother transitions (that also take longer) due to having animation transitions, with female characters likely having sharper transitions (that are faster) due to *not* having more fully developed animation transitions. At least, that's my guess from my understanding of the info presented here.

@@timzy11ful Uh... I just want to point out, the male accelerates *more slowly* It's not to do with strength, if seems more like weight. That results in faster acceleration, but also faster momentum loss

The guy you responded to already made his case clear, there is obviously nothing more that could possibly be added when he laid it all out like that. :'D Though being real for a second, that mass you're talking about really doesn't have a negative effect on neither acceleraion or speed. The extra muscles and longer legs will be more benneficial than what the extra weight is detrimental to both speed and acceleration. It won't really start to matter before you get way outside the average physique - but taking only a certain kind of outliers into account wouldn't make any real sense for this. I first noticed there was a difference when I got into item duping glitches. I realized that I simply couldn't do the classic item dupe glitch with a female character, but it worked basically all the time when I was male, rolls, backsteps, even parries were enough go dupe a Soul with a male, but it refused to work with a female no matter how many frames the animation had. For a long time I played only male characters for that reason, until I noticed (during a gitchless playthrough where I picked female exactly to avoid duping) that, FOR SOME REASON... the glitch worked just as fine so long as the gal was holding any heavy weapon on her shoulder. To this day I didn't know why that was, this video is a good clarification, but it's not like I use that glitch anymore, since it was fixed (for the most part) on the remaster.

TIP: when using the boss soul dupe. You know how you need an animation to do it like rolling or attacking with a heavy weapon? The actual usage of the soul is one of them. Right after the souls is gone in your hand and you are about to go back to idle animation, use the soul, go to inventory use estus, then the soul and you are doing it again, way faster, way easier due to the animation of the consumption of the soul. Hope it helps! EDIT : DO NOT USE IT LIKE NORMAL!!! I mean to not actually normally consume the soul and then do it NO. First roll or attack with a heavy weapon THEN use it and when the animation of consumption plays, once the character's fist closes and you receive the souls for the boss soul then use it go to items use estus and then the soul. BTW: an early boss soul is the moonlight butterfly. Gives 1200 souls per usage. I usually go after queelaag after that because she has 8000 souls per usage, iron golem 14000 then sif 16000 but you could use the souls from moonlight butterfly to get crest of artorias and try sif. Good luck!
