"If you have enough crumbs you can make a piece of bread." That's got to be one of the best I've heard for a long time. Thanks for your down to earth observations of boat cruising life James. I've been a fan for a good while now and you never seem to get swept up in the bikini, clickbait scene which I wholeheartedly thank you for. Fair winds.

Great series of videos. What I like the most about your videos is that you're not blowing smoke, you're sharing your (mostly) raw unedited experiences and not trying to be something you're not.

As a boatbuilder and a sailor (who had to abort some of the plans prematurely for health reasons) I can contribute two advices here: First, in doubt, better take the smaller boat, both because of overall costs and because of easier handling in deteriorating conditions. And second: Do. Not. Wait. Cheers James, and thanks for sharing.

I’m 48, solo mama (x3) working hard and taking my first steps towards my impossible dream. Signed up for a local RYA course. Tomorrow is a sailing lesson (3/6) in the morning (dingy) and a trip on a cat in the afternoon around the Jurassic coast. You’re right, just do it! I’m totally loving it ⛵️ one step at a time ….. I won’t be a free agent for a few more years so this is my commitment to my future dream.

In the same boat, so to speak. Done my first RYA course and now looking at buying a day boat to sail for a few years. Once the kids fly the nest, I’m off on an adventure myself. Good luck chasing the dream 😊

You asked for feedback:- This miniseries provides a great collection of thoughts and good advice in bite sized portions. A succinct overview of what would take hours and hours of YT watching to summarize for oneself. Plus, You are actually doing it and bring that background cred to your opinions and advice. WELL DONE. I had already selected the 3-6 months per year option for myself and Jasmine, a 32ft Samson C-Mist that I have converted into a Junk Rig Sloop, will be ready for me and Dixie, my English Pointer, to set off from South Africa early next year. Should we perchance share an anchorage somewhere the dinner is on me. Fair winds Cap'n.

I have been watching more sailing youtube in the past few months than is healthy! Planning to buy my first boat. You are the FIRST person I've seen to ever discuss how much they make via youtube/patreon, and I think that's awesome. Also, one of the few larger channels that doesn't spam me with 3-5 minute long sponsorship nonsense, which I super appreciate. Also loved 'if you have enough crumbs you can make a piece of bread'!

Great ending to a great series. Part of my fascination with sailing is because of a neighbor, in California in the mid 1960's, figured a way to sail the South Pacific on his WW2 VA disability income (not much). Sold his house, bought a Cheoy Lee, got a PO Box in Hawaii, and off he went. Near as I can tell his dream was fulfilled, lost touch after a few Christmas cards.

Commenting for the algorithm. Thanks James. You're right it was your "rudder lost at sea" vid I first came across. Im trying the sailing channel thing but am at a very very early phase. The filming thing is amazing fun but it can be exhausting and is also expensive. Regarding the costs, my favorite example is the guys from Sailing Kittiwake. They have a video where they discuss that they spend around 500 pounds per month with the two of them cruising europe and the med. Now thats affordable! And their remote work brought them 700 pounds or more per month. These stories exist and motivate me a lot.

James, you do such a great job artistically with your videos. Intersticing cuts of sailing life between the topics is such a professional touch but many people wouldn't think of something like that. Your art experience shows a lot in your photography and editing.

Thanks for the transparency in this video, James. Ive always appreciated that about you. I know you have shared a large portion of your life with us, the viewers: Im sure all will agree that we appreciate it. After seeing small clips of your early days in this video series and knowing a little background of your art and art installations, have you considered sharing more about your previous 'land life'? I always ask about your art in the live chats and im super curious of your background in 'Set Fabrication', where you come from, and frankly, who you are. Im sure you are well aware you are a different cut than that average YT sailor. From the tats & piercings to the Misfits reference in your old merch - will you consider doing a deeper dive / bio of who you are and what shaped your character? Props on living your dream.

good series thus far, lots of practical and useful stuff. only thing I'd like to mention is that (at least where I live) for a lot of people it's going to be ridiculously hard to go the rent-as-income option. unless you're in your 50s and already bought multiple homes when you were in your 20s, it's not a feasible option to start working on. house market is ridiculously pricey atm, either you find your way into money/ other houses with like an inheritance or something. Or you're rich enough to buy multiple houses out of hand, but then the cost of your sailing adventure barely matters anyway cause you've got well over half a million of savings and can quite easily set up extra income streams. (small houses of around 100square meters 1bathroom, 2bedrooms, with a small yard easily cost 200k where I live, even apartments are close to this price and the taxes on buying extra houses are a lot higher so you can expect to pay 250K+ on legal shite fora house that costs 200K) Sure if you win the lottery for let's say 1-2 million. then you can buy 1-3 houses and set them up for renting, use whatever's left on a boat and live off of rental income. but well, winning the lottery is a long shot xP for me the more plausible option is this: I do have a house and if I finally gain the needed experience to actually make the jump to living on a boat, I plan to rent the house out, it won't be a primary income cause of the mortgage, but the rent should cover the mortgage and some extra. so it'll be pocket money, and I'll have a house to come back to if I ever decide to go back to land for whatever reason (or a house to possibly sell if needs be). but well, that's not a stable income. meaning I'll still need to find a way to make money at sea. I'm an IT guy so remote work should be a possibility IF I have good internet connectivity, like actually stable internet, that way I could keep some form of (at least)part time 100% remote job going. Other than the fact that it doesn't magically gets me the 'startup cost' it does provide an option to have an income that might be sufficient once underway.

Great video on a subject that is very important . I’m selling my property here in Missouri and making a ton plus retirement money is great . I’ve was going to do this 6 years ago but let friends and family talk me out of it . At 70 sitting on a rocking chair on my homestead isn’t for me . I came very close to dying from a bad Sleep Apnea Mach which I have a lawsuit pending which made me think about my life which at 70 I have already buried 4 of my family members. I’m not afraid of dying, it’s dying without seeing my dreams . If I can live and sail around before I kick the bucket I’ll be totally stoked . I already have a Will made out so I’m ready lol .

Very well made James, I watched all these videos, and virtually all your other sailing videos. I am trying to follow your steps and be able to go cruising full time, though the difference is 50 years og age, I am 74. After learning to sail in the Med with a 37.5 Hunter Legend boat, this winter I bought a 27 years old Island Packet 40, did a total refit, and with her I will go cruising. Don't know if I am in time for a solo circumnavigation , but.. we will see. Fair winds.

You losing the rudder is why I'm watching you.😂 That's when I discovered your channel. My plan? I have a bit of savings and I have a few bucks in a retirement plan from a job I worked years ago. I'll have enough to buy a small boat, make sure it's seaworthy and sail for a year or two, no more than three. By then I hope I'll have figured out a way to continue or maybe I'll have had enough and will stop anyway. I'll start a KZbin channel but I understand that's like winning a lottery, if all else fails I can sail home to Canada for a few months every year and work. Life is a gamble anyway and I've had enough of getting up at 430 every day to make someone else money, I'm willing to risk everything to change that. I've always wanted to live a life where all my effort goes towards me.

Man, when you got to Hawaii on your journey, from the mainland, I was stoked to see it. It had to be such a great feeling, and it probably still is. I told myself, you know. You can do anything you put your mind to. Sailing the pacific? I wouldn't do it, I barely know how to swim. But what's awesome is you fucking did it man! Through a testament of time. it was done. Since you did it, I've thought about your journey. Then I came back to check in with your channel because I've been busy and you were in French Polynesia. And I'm again thinking, only shit, this is awesome. Damn solid. Since then, I was thinking, man Hawaii looks beautiful. My girlfriend at the time was like, "Let's go to Hawaii.". I moved from Hamilton, Ontario to California. From California to Hawaii. Now I'm sitting in a house we've bought in Mountain View, and we've married since December. I attribute and channel some of that energy from the this content you've created. Your journey you're on. There's just some healing nature to it. The process, thought, the realness, and that projection that you can do anything your mind and body allows. Thanks for the realness you exude. Keep rocking, man. Hello James. We know Holly Martin's folks, and live in Maine. Jill just retired, we're both 68 and own a Sam L Morse Bristol Channel Cutter 28. We are debt free, and own a vacation rental property in Maine. We are not going to sell everything, or spend every cent we've saved. We have never had more than two weeks off together to "cruise". Now we have more time and so many options, yet so many limitations now that we've older and on social security. We both love the boat and how she sails, but I'm much more focused on sail trim and systems. Jill loves the peacefulness and how the boat sails itself. We have a Monitor. How far we take this, for me is up to Jill. Crossing the pond is a big step, so we plan to visit the Maritimes and try the trip south BVI or something. This August we'll have been married 44 years. She's a keeper. You advise is much appreciated. Rob and Jill Rice Bristol, Maine

Isn't it amazing how that incident at sea after you and your girl broke up made your channel? LOL I remember watching that and thinking ,wow , he's gotta deal with all this at once?? It seems like it really made you strong, like it tempered you, right? I tell people that sailing is a martial art and I really believe that. I'm so glad you don't drink too. If you ever make it out to the East Coast I have my own 120ft pier that my son an I built on the ICW with two slips. I also have a place where the wild horses roam that's a 16 mile drive up a primative beach with no roads, signs or mail delivery. If you are ever in the area you have an open invitation. (;
