The Ten Penny Puzzle is an absolute minimalistic puzzle. Ten Pennies must fit into the square. It is definitely one of these "Let's give it a try" puzzles, no matter if you are a puzzler or not.

Before I even watch the video I know the solution. Where I work we have milk bottles that go in crates and it goes on the same principle, ninefit but with a huge gap, but if you put the 10th in just right it fits; needless to say, I know where the sweet spot is (thanks to an old coworker actually, I’m not really *that* smart ;p).

yeah, that would have surprised me as well. As I am a puzzle fan and twisty puzzle collector I went to one of these stores a few years ago, hoping for any kind of challenge. Unfortunatelly, they seem to concentrate on every kind of electronic toy and speeking fluffy animals rather than on "real" games even adults could enjoy. For puzzles, they usually do not sell more than an original Rubik's cube and jigsaw puzzles. Totally useless for puzzle addicts...

I don't think so. Of course, this is a math problem and it depends on the person, what do you find interesting, but it is pretty certainly not "deep" or "important". Has nothing to do with dense packing or physical applications, just trivial brute force calculations.

physics and nature is all about efficiency,and this puzzle here shows whats the most efficient way,so i think there is a deep math meaning inside it,now just like you said,its less or more intresting depending on the person
@u.v.s.5583
@u.v.s.5583 6 жыл бұрын
What I mean is this is not a natural question. This problem contains a single important parameter, the ratio between the side length of the square and the diameter of the circle. Now, where does this number comes up in natural situations? The side length of the square is essential and very artifical, you cannot take away this parameter to create an interesting, important periodic structure or anything of that kind. Hence I see a single number and this is not that interesting.
@u.v.s.5583
@u.v.s.5583 6 жыл бұрын
There is a branch of recreational mathematics that investigates questions like what is the minimal side length of a square that can fit in n circles of unit radius, and the related questions about a cube or hypercube. In this sense, yeah, it is kinda cool.

Maybe there is only one solution that demonstrates all pennies in their final place. But it seems there must be 10 possible solutions overall (or more if it is mirrored). Starting with nine pennies, there are ten possible places that could be left open as gaps for the final penny to move into. This can be demonstrated by starting with the ten pennies in the final place, then taking any one of them out at random to show the position of nine pennies that would allow the tenth penny to be placed back in the puzzle. Nice puzzle.
@norbyn6537
@norbyn6537 6 жыл бұрын
am i the only one who understand exactly what you saying xD like literally the solution he showed is actually 10 solutions in 1 cause we could take out each coin 1 by 1 and 1 at a time to see all 10 possibilities xD
@FuryTA
@FuryTA 6 жыл бұрын
You could move each penny into another's slot and flip them as well. Thats alot of solutions.
@Riskomul
@Riskomul 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly the solution is not 9 pennies but 10 pennies inside... so you are not right. The pattern will still be the same.
@barneytrubble
@barneytrubble 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is all the same pattern, so there is only one solution. However, there are ten ways to get to that solution. Mr. Puzzle solved this by trying to constantly reposition those nine pennies until he could fit that final penny in. He decided that he had to position the pennies so that the final penny could fit roughly in the middle. However someone else could position the pennies leaving a gap at the side, or at the top, or at the bottom. This is how the puzzle will be solved by most people, and so there are ten possible ways to stumble upon a solution, as there are ten possible gaps that can be created for the final penny to fill. This makes it a slightly easier puzzle than might be suggested when we are told that there is only one solution.

I used to have one as a kid like this, except it was harder because it was a picture puzzle inside a puzzle. Also instead of trying to fit in one extra piece inside (like the one shown here), it had an "open" space where adjacent pieces can be slid to the free space and make a new opening from their original position. (I hope I explained it correctly)
