At that time there were no roads linking the south to the north of Brazil. So the only way to travel around was using passenger ships. My mother was a child at that time, she traveled with her parents from Rio to Belem in 1942. At night all kinds of lights were forbidden, including cigarettes. The ships navigated in complete darkness and had no radars. They moved far away from the coast to avoid the coast lights in the background that could reveal the ship's silhouette.

I’m Brazilian and didn’t knew about the navy campaign until recently . It’s crazy how our country doesn’t care about its own story . Today being a patriot here is seen for the left wing people from the media , politics and in general as being a “fascist” whilst they’re those who have disarmed the civilian population since their first rise to power in 2003 , now to buy a simple 38 revolver you must prove you need it , which is a joke in a country with more than 50 thousand homicides a year , and where bandits have machine guns and all sort of weaponry . I could only get my guns because I have a job in the security industry that gives me prerogatives to own firearms and even carry it . I feel sorry for the thousands of fathers and mothers and innocent kids killed and sometimes sodomized by criminals because they or their parents can’t own even an old rusty 38 . That’s sad .

@@niel022 You made me laugh 😂 Indeed Brazilians like myself for the most part are interested in World Cup wars. As a son of a Hungarian that escaping the invading Russian tanks immigrated to Brazil, the Battle of Bern comes to mind at the Quarter-Final of the 1954 World Cup between Hungary and Brazil. Soccer is the only sport that actually stopped momentarily a war for a match to be played like Honduras vs El Salvador. Tragic events also is remembered such as the Death Match between Ukrainians prisoners and their Nazi captors in 1942, were they were executed for winning the game and the 1934 World Cup where the Italian squad were told by Mussolini that they better win if they didn’t want to face a firing squad. Brazil was actually chosen to host the first post World War II World Cup in 1950 because our nation was considered somewhat neutral although the Brazilian Army were remembered for their brave actions in Italy by the end of the war. Loosing to Uruguay in the last minutes of that Final (Brazil only needed a draw), was such a tragedy in the newly built largest soccer stadium in the world with over 200 thousand in attendance, that a few inconsolable fans literally took their own lives. I guess that as an American you wouldn’t be aware of any of this. 🇧🇷🇺🇸

When WW2 started, Brazil's main immigrant groups were GERMANS, ITALIANS and JAPANESE. Germans settled a lot of South Brazil starting in 1824 (114 years before WW2). Italians started immigrating in 1870 to south Brazil's rural areas (creating their own cities) and to southeast Brazil's existing cities... at the start of the 20th century, over half the population of São Paulo, Brazils biggest city (although at the time maybe it was still Rio de Janeiro) were italians. At the start of WWI the most impressive Dreadnoughts were in the Royal Navy and the US Navy. The Brazilian ships armour was 9" at it's thickest and their main battery was 12" guns with a speed of 21 kts. These are respectable Battleships in their own right and I mean to take nothing away from the Brazilian Navy but compared the British R class with 15" guns and 13" armour, or the Iron Duke's and their cousins with 13.5" guns and 12" armour it is clear that they were not superior to these ships. The USN had produced the New York and Nevada class battleships with 14" guns and armour 12" and 13 1/2 inches respectively, this clearly outclasses the Brazilian Dreadnoughts. Having said all of that this is a good and informative video and I thank you for it.

Just a clarification, Recife is the capital city of the State of Pernambuco. It never had any other name. My grandfather was part of a small coastal patrol boat looking for anchored U-boats hiding near the coast at night. Thanks for the video anyway, always lovely to see the perspective of people from other countries about Brazilian history

Baependi wasn't a military troop transporter. The military were using it to ferry troops towards northwest together with civilians. More brazilians were killed in Uboat attacks than in Italy, facing the germans in frontlines.

I had a professor at Georgetown who taught Latin American history and got his doctorate writing about Brazilian history.. I liked reading about Brazil’s history and it’s efforts to fight the Axis powers in WW2.

During WWII, my father ( born in Recife from Bessarabian-Ukrainian Jews) wanted to serve on a ship as a musician, initially, as it was his profession (violinist). However, being still a minor when the War broke up for Brazil, my grandfather didn’t allow him to embark. Weeks (or months) later, my father learned that, the very same ship ( unfortunately I don’t know its name) was sunk by the Germans at the coast of Recife or close to it. Again, I don’t know the number of victims. My father told me this story.

As Brazil was leaning towards Germany, the United States, concerned about this, sank Brazilian ships and said that it was Germany's intention to force Brazil to enter the war against the Germans, that's what was said here at the time.

It's also interesting to note that Brazil and Sweden had aproximately the same amount of casualities on WW2 (considering that Rio de Janeiro sits about 10.000km from Germany). I had the chance to visit Gaggio Montano when I was living in Italy, there's a monument and a little museum about the brazilian bravery during the Italy campaign. Also, Recife is not formely known as Pernambuco. Recife is the capital of the State of Pernambuco (still called that). So Recife is in Pernambuco.

*Just to correct, there were not 16 Pc 461 class submarine fighters, but 8, 8 Pc461 class and 8 Sc497 class. The Canon class only arrived in 1944 and not as soon as we declared war on the axis.

Important point to add into reasons why U-Boat presence in N & NE BR coast is due to the American Airfield in Natal named Parnamirim Field. It was an important touchpoint to Allied North African front effort.

Great video, pardon me because english is not my native langague. I have a personal photo archives of Brazilian ships and i have some of ww2 ships and one of the most interesting one in my opinion is the M Parnaíba U-17 who is a ship still in active service. (Parnayba at that times) she was a river monitor deeply modified into ASW and furthermore she has a special role to provide support and escort allied ships on a route from Rio de Janeiro-Recife-Trinidad and Tobago. Ships like the Vital de Oliveira that you mentioned in your video in 11/22/1943 and the USS Iowa(BB 61) in 11/29/1943. She was retrofitted in 1998 and she is still at service with 86 years old of services provided to the Brazilian Navy

My uncle Joe Crosswaithe (born in Puebla, Mexico) was based in Belem, Bz and flew missions to Morocco. HE was pretty old when I got around to asking him about his experience in WWII. HE was later moved to the Pacific theater, Calcutta I think and flew supply missions to China or maybe Burma. HE later became a Catholic priest. Since he knew Spanish, his first gig was to deliver mass to migrant farmers in California from the back of his truck. A true warrior.
