One of my teachers brought this to class one day and when this scene come on I lost it. To the moment when he said "serpentine". To Shell jumpimg over the dead guy, to finally when he runs; excuse me, 'serpintines', back to the car with the keys. It was so unexpected, that my laughter burst out of me before I could stop it. I'm a pretty reserved person. Suffice it to say I had the whole class, teacher included, looking back at me grinning at my uncontroled outburst. Yeah.😏 Hold on, I'm going to watch it again.😄

There’s an interesting pilot thing about this scene. The airport is the Catalina Airport on Santa Catalina Island in the Channel Islands off of Long Beach, California. The runway, before its recent renovation, was famous for an optical illusion caused by the first half of Runway 22 sloping uphill and the second half of the runway being level which gave the runway a hump in the middle so that airplanes at opposite ends of the runway wouldn’t be able to see each other. But the main thing was that when landing, the second half of the runway would disappear once you landed making it look like you were running out of runway which occasionally caused pilots to panic and go-around. A Learjet ran off the end of the runway once when the pilots got confused by the illusion. The movie is being filmed on the level portion at the very end of Runway 22. When the Learjet starts taxiing, it’s not going to go far before it goes over the cliff at the end of the runway. The terminal building is roughly at the midpoint of the runway. Even from the elevated camera angle looking back towards the terminal building the runway isn’t even visible because it drops out of view. It’s most visible during the serpentine shot and when they get in the Mercedes at the end. Only the near half of the runway is visible, with the ocean and California visible on the horizon.

The practically brand new 1975 model Lear Jet-24 belonged to the Clay Lacy company and was still registered to the company 40 years later in 2015.

It took a pilot with Clay Lacy's skill to land that Lear 24 at Catalina; scorching down final with a Vref around 125 knots and no reversers.

In January of 1984 a Learjet plunged off the cliff at the end of the runway killing all six people aboard after the pilot got confused by the Catalina runway illusion. The first 2000 feet of the runway slopes uphill and the rest of the runway is flat so that as a plane lands the last part of the runway disappears from the pilot’s view. The Learjet pilot landed, but thought he was running out of runway so he went to takeoff power to abort the landing and do a touch and go which would have been a good move. Except that once the Learjet got to the flat part of the runway and the pilot could see that he had more runway, he then aborted the takeoff and tried to stop on the remaining runway. By this time, after accelerating to takeoff again, there wasn’t enough runway to stop. The plane skidded over a 50 foot cliff and burst into flames.

"Serpentine!" is one of those memories I had when I was little and didn't know what the hell it was from until a few years ago when I randomly saw the scene or someone mentioned it in a podcast. Now if I could only figure out the late 80's to mid 90's commercial where a little boy is losing to his older brother in like basketball and he's really sad, and then the next scene they're in like a Chuck E Cheese type place and the little kid says "Now you're on my turf", and he's having a blast playing games like skee ball and Whac-A-Mole

I loved that, too! 🤣 Psych was hilarious!! But I guess you have to be from just the right time period to truly appreciate Psych because I noticed that my nieces & nephews only think a few parts are funny (and don't get most of the jokes with 80s band names being the punchline) ...and my mom kinda gets it, but she's also lost on a lot of the pop culture references. Even my son, who was born after the internet came about, he see's the incredible difference in quality. Any one TV episode from your dad's era has more comedy, drama, storytelling...everything packed in it than any big budget movie today(with the exception of maybe Breaking Bad.
