Not a Seahawks fan, but they made the right move. A guy who plays like Russ can only last so long. Father Time is undefeated. You can see the writing on the wall and you trade him while he's still at top value. I think it was a smart move by Seattle to get as much as they could for him and start the rebuild that would've had to come whether they had Wilson or not.

@@blackmask494 the cap was a lot larger for Pat after his rookie contract. New TV deals such as Amazon, Yahoo, and other outlets, created more money which helped increase the cap after Mahome's rookie contract. Seahawks, shouldn't have got rid of Max Unger, which was the key to their offensive line. Once he was traded, they couldn't find the linemen that could help russ. The cap was not as big for Russ after the rookie contract. 5 million a year now for an offensive lineman is more palatable now, then during russ's tenor. Seahawks are known to really pay a lot for defense, and skill players. Overall, Russ didn't help himself when he holds on the ball too long, doesn't adjust at the line like Rodgers, Manning, Brady, and Brees, and doesn't like throwing short routes to his TE's and RB's he only throws to the out routes, and deep routes. I'm a seahawks fan, and it pains me to say it, but Russ was his own worst enemy when he wouldn't take what the defense gave him. He just wanted the deep routes.

The key takeaway for me, having lived through all this as an old school Seahawks fan: Russell was more concerned with his legacy, MVP, stats, than the team. On the surface he PRETENDED to be a team guy, and it worked for awhile. Then, over time, by 2019 for sure, the veils started falling. You can see why many of his new teammates won't play that game with him (the locker room low fives, for example). Sadly, his ego got the best of him. It happens to many of his stature. Unfortunately, if and when he gets right with himself, it will likely be too late. If he simply focused on doing the right things, he probably would have gotten an MVP. It's like wanting to sell a million records if you're a musician rather than writing good songs, playing great shows, and connecting with your fans. Just my thoughts.

I am a Seattle Native, and have lived here my entire life. Russell began to decline once he hooked up with his wife IMO. His personality and entire persona changed. Russ became “Russell Wilson” the brand. Very disingenuous and caught up in his own hype and image. He seems so phony now compared to his first 4-5 years here in Seattle. Shades of A-Rod. Just about himself and his image and how he looks. He’s gone Hollywood. Too bad. He was incredible for a good stretch.

So, Brady gets the ball out faster, huh? Look down at the bottom oof the list of years. It is amazing how people grabbed onto this narrative and have been parroting it. Below is statistical proof that Russ's sack numbers were not the result of his holding onto the rock for too long. The following is a breakdown of Russell Wilson's time to throw and sack numbers year by year, with notable comparisons. *2020* Russell Wilson - 2.97 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 47 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.89 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 7th), Sacked 22 times Josh Allen - 3.04 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 3rd most), Sacked 26 times *2019* Russell Wilson - 2.85 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 12th most), Sacked 48 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.88 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th most), Sacked 36 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.82 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 18th), Sacked 17 times Josh Allen - 2.85 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 10th most), Sacked 38 times *2018* Russell Wilson - 3.02 seconds Time to throw (Ranked 3rd most), Sacked 51 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.91 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 8th), Sacked 26 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.95 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 49 times Josh Allen - 3.22 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 1st), Sacked 28 times Jared Goff - 2.95 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th), Sacked 33 times *2017* Russell Wilson - 3.05 seconds Time to throw (Ranked 2nd most), Sacked 43 times Jared Goff - 2.93 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 25 times *2016* Russell Wilson - 2.61 seconds Time to throw ( Ranked 20th), Sacked 41 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.87 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th most), Sacked 35 times *Tom Brady* - 2.56 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 25th), Sacked 15 times Note that Russ was pretty badly injured in 2016 but played every game and led the team to the playoffs. Thats was how they thanked him. Although the numbers vary by QB from year to year, it seems to me that Wilson has consistently taken a beating no matter how long he holds the ball. And those numbers don't quite line up with other QBs and their sack numbers/hits relative to how long they hold the ball. Source: Nextgenstats

Yeah but I along with other Seahawk fans expected more than repeated one and dones in the playoffs. Bon Voyage Wilson. If Schneider had the brains to scout Allen and Mahomes before they were considered to be future hall of fame style QBs makes me rest easy that in 2023 Seattle will bring in the right QB on a rookie deal and Seattle can get back to competing for Super Bowls. Oh and I never forgave Wilson after his Super Bowl choke play in the half yard line. I wanted him out after that. Seattle got stupid and wanted to pamper Wilson’s ass instead of handing the ball off to Lynch. Then all the turmoil on the defensive side of the ball started and the almost dynasty died. I have more faith In Carroll and Schneider to get us back to winning a SuperBowl than I ever did with the Oompa Loompa. Sorry didn’t want to stomp on your comment but Wilson was the problem with Seattle. To think he should have the same input like Brady is a joke. I live here in Seattle and have been a Seahawks fan from the jump. Russell Wilson brought a special magic to this team and was amazing to watch throughout the ride. But it was clear that all the sacks that he was taking we're beating the hell out of his body. His escapability and ability to use his legs to get a first down we're definitely declining. There was never any question about arm strength or accuracy or any of that. But after watching this, my thoughts about Russell have changed a bit. I didn't know that he was so self involved with the MVP issue and other control issues. I think that we had the best Russell Wilson that the NFL will ever see.

@DeCurtaRican
@DeCurtaRican Жыл бұрын
@@rickspalding3047 : Maybe his character has some issues, but that’s no reason to disparage the man’s skills. I knew Russ was a wolf in sheep’s clothing when he kept going out of his way to present himself as this angel. Russ admittedly was a thug back in school. He loved to fight, had a short temper and allegedly hurt a few people. Whenever you see a person filming himself doing good things for others, it’s phony. Having said that, I’m 100% on Russ’s side football-wise (read my other comments in these threads). Russ is too short to be a pure pocket-passer without receiving perfect protection. That means he needs to use his legs. The Tarkington comparisons are fair, but Russ was and is a better passer and athlete than Tarkington ever was. And Tarkington receives the treatment that legends deserve. He went to three Super bowls and lost all three, yet no one mentions that, and rightly so. It took much for him to even reach those Super Bowls. Secondly, he played with a legendary defense of his own, the Purple People Eaters, led by Allan Paige. Does he ever get downgraded for it? No. Does he get downgraded for having Chuck Foreman as his RB, or Ahmad Rashad as his WR? No. I can go down the list of great QBs , most of who won SBs with great D’s, great RBs, and quite honestly better receiving weapons and protection than Russ ever had. They are never asked to apologize for it, but Russ is. Terry Bradshaw played with the greatest defense ever, the Steel Curtain, had an elite O-Line, had Franco Harris and Rocky Blier in his backfield, and had Lynn Swann and John Stallworth for receivers. That is the definition of an embarrassment of riches! Does anyone ever call Bradshaw a scrub because of it? No. His stats and performances don’t rival Russ’s, but he is afforded the respect of a man who co-dominated an entire decade and won four Super Bowls. Roger Staubach is never told to apologize for having the Doomsday Defense (starting Ed “Too-Tall” Jones and Randy White), guys like Bob Hayes, Drew Pearson and Tony Hill for WRs, and Tony Dorsett and Robert Newhouse as RBs, plus a stellar O-Line. Is Bob Griese ever told to apologize for having the No-Name D, plus guys like Mercury Morris and Larry Czonka on his squad? Montana had a stellar D as well, and including Ronnie Lott and the gang, plus weapons on offense, including arguably the greatest weapon to ever play the game in Jerry Rice. Is he ever downgraded for it? No. I could go further… Brady Elway Favre Aikman Young P. Manning When does anyone ever ask those guys to apologize for having help?! When do people downgrade them? Jim Kelly Fran Tarkington Dan Marino Those three had BETTER teams than Russ did, played in Super Bowls and lost them. Every QB I mentioned has had coaches who were superior to Pete Carroll, who has a career 50-55 record without Russ (it was 47-49 before Russ was drafted). He’s 3-5 with Geno as his QB, yet Seahawks fans are acting like the Seahawks are headed for this year’s SB. I seriously doubt they even make the playoffs. Russ may be a douche, but he has a legitimate gripe when it comes to the football end of things.
@DeCurtaRican
@DeCurtaRican Жыл бұрын
As far as having the best Russ, that remains to be seen. Even if true, we could partially blame Pete for it. He neglected that O-Line and refused to update the offense. Now, he has strategically revamped the O-Line and turned over the offense to Shane Waldron to avoid being exposed, but if you look closely Pete IS exposed. Is he playing the brand of football he said he wanted to play? Geno is chucking it about 35 times per game!!! That’s a tacit admission that Russ had a legitimate complaint. Strict ball-control offense won’t win in today’s NFL, especially if your D is garbage. You have to put up points regardless. They’re not even winning now, but that’s because Geno AIN’T Russ, as surprisingly efficient as he has been. The Seahawks are a 2-3 team that should really be 1-4. The Broncos gave them that game. If Russ was still the Seahawks QB, they would be 5-0 right now.

I am so glad Seattle traded him. I thought it was years too late. Chicago offered better package 2 years ago but Hawks refused. Young RW used to make some amazing plays by scrambling forever then finding someone open 50 yards downfield. That's entertaining but not sustainable. Older RW can't quite get out of trouble anymore. Those 50 yard gains are now 20 yard losses. As RW body got some miles defense players are younger and faster. Bad combination for RW. Hawks got great value for 6 years but overpaid last 3 years. The only reason he was successful was we had an amazing defense and great Offensive line. Now that he is in Denver even with a decent defense he is totally crapping the bed. I know a new QB coming in can take a while to get going but he can’t handle losing and I believe will continue to deteriorate. I don’t think with what Denver is paying him and their poor drafting ability they will be able to afford and decent protection for him especially with how his new teammates are already resenting him.

"Let Russ cook" worked for a few games until the entire league figured it out. Russ can't hit the short middle routes. The so-called moon ball quit working so much. He's much slower afoot than when he was younger. Not to mention an article I read (can't remember the source it was a science article) that used Russ as an example of toxic positivity. As far as I'm concerned the Seahawks got the best of Russ's career and the Broncos can have the rest.

Russell Wilson needs to watch Tom Brady talk about how he approached football rather than watching him play or worrying about whether he had to say in personnel selection or not. Brady earned what he got and he earned it every day. He didn’t question decisions of coaches or anything or why he was third string and had to work his way up - he just did it. There’s a valuable lesson there - watch Brady talk about things now that he has retired. Plus Brady never talked about his personal negotiations and such with Belichick or the organization and never griped about the fact that he wasn’t as high paid as a lot of other quarterbacks. You can learn a lot from Brady. It’s called humility, inner focus and teamwork.

I have watched every game Wilson has played. And he was very fun to watch. But.... Wilson does hang onto the ball to long. And over the last couple years you can see Wilson was more worried about winning MVP titles then winning football games. Pete cares about his players (Players coach). And Pete did what he could do to please Wilson. But, it was in direct conflict with Pete's football philosophy. I have hardly seen Wilson complete a pass in the pocket. What a great video and best yet I have seen or heard about the Russell Wison trade. Thank you for filling in some blanks I had. Interesting to think that his scrambling not only added to his sacks he was taking, but it is hard to help a guy who scrambles so much. I bet his offensive line are better then we all think, but being his scrambling, they couldn't help him. Pocket quarterbacks likely have to be a bit quicker to pass. Russelll was always on the move, and would leave the pocket, which would obviously make him vulnerable. I really liked Russell for his community service to sick kids at childrens hospital, and how hard a worker he is/was, but I am also glad he is somewhere else, being how unhappy he was. Thanks again for a great video and article as well.

Are you nuts? Every expert who has reviewed that SB tape, including Darrell Bevell, has blamed Ricardo Lockette for running a bad interior route, and if you look at the video that’s exactly what happened. He broke at a bad angle, i.e., towards the goal line instead of towards the ball. That’s WR101: always break strongly towards the ball on an interior slant in the red zone. Russ didn’t cause that INT. Bad play-call in the first place: Pete Carroll & Darrell Bevell; Bad interior route: Ricardo Lockette; Great play on the ball: Malcolm Butler. Russ threw a perfect pass, and if Lockette had ran at a more shallow angle he would have secured the ball before being hit! That play would have been ill-advised in that situation and context no matter what QB was under enter: Montana, Rodgers, Manning, Mahomes, Brady… It doesn’t matter. Furthermore, Pete Carroll is the only coach dumb enough to allow such a thing to happen.
@DeCurtaRican

Pete is not an NFL HoF coach. College may be one thing but the NFL is another story. He had a career 47-49 NFL coaching record before drafting Russ, including 14-18 in the two years before Russ was drafted (with the LoB and Beast Mode on the squad). That 14-18 record consisted of back-to-back 7-9 seasons. I hate to break it to you, but Pete still has a losing record without Russ. His record with Geno starting currently 2-3 for the first 5 weeks of the 2022 season, and 1-2 in 2021 (really 1-3 b/c Geno took over the rams game). That’s a combined 3-5 without Russ over the past two years! Hence, Pete’s career NFL coaching record without Russ is 50-55. Furthermore, Pete admitted in a Bleacher Report that Russ was the reason he had lasted with the Seahawks. Look it up. He credited Russ for his longevity and success - and for keeping him from being FIRED! Pete really was headed for the hot seat when Russ was drafted. Don’t try to rewrite/revise history.

I get wanting a say when you’re an elite QB, but Watson wanting to have a say in GM and coach?! That’s ridiculous. QB should have some input to a degree on players on their side of the ball, but coaches and office staff? GTFO. Russell Wilson hasn’t earned that right. There’s a reason he didn’t let Russell cook; cause he’s gonna burn it in a bad way. Ugh just watching the first few minutes of this just reaffirms what a little B Russell is.

According to PFF, Russ caused only 20% of his own sacks. PFF is the emenent sports analytics authority. Then there's NextGen Stats. O pulled some interesting information there too. It is amazing how people grabbed onto this narrative and have been parroting it without examining it. Well, as an M.S. in Analytics candidate at Northwestern University, I wanted to look a bit more deeply into this argument. Below is statistical proof that Russ's sack numbers were not the result of his holding onto the rock for too long. The following is a breakdown of Russell Wilson's time to throw and sack numbers year by year, with notable comparisons. If other QBs hold the ball for as long as Russ but aren't getting sacked as often, you cannot say that his holding the ball is the cause. *2020* Russell Wilson - 2.97 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 47 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.89 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 7th), Sacked 22 times Josh Allen - 3.04 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 3rd most), Sacked 26 times *2019* Russell Wilson - 2.85 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 12th most), Sacked 48 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.88 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th most), Sacked 36 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.82 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 18th), Sacked 17 times Josh Allen - 2.85 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 10th most), Sacked 38 times Notably, Josh Allen and Aaron Rodgers were sacked nearly as often but still less often, but no one blamed them for their sacks. *2018* Russell Wilson - 3.02 seconds Time to throw (Ranked 3rd most), Sacked 51 times Patrick Mahomes - 2.91 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 8th), Sacked 26 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.95 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 49 times Josh Allen - 3.22 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 1st), Sacked 28 times Jared Goff - 2.95 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th), Sacked 33 times *Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett were both injured that year, baldwin so badly that he had to retire at season's end.* *2017* Russell Wilson - 3.05 seconds Time to throw (Ranked 2nd most), Sacked 43 times Jared Goff - 2.93 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 5th most), Sacked 25 times *2016* Russell Wilson - 2.61 seconds Time to throw ( Ranked 20th), Sacked 41 times Aaron Rodgers - 2.87 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 6th most), Sacked 35 times Tom Brady - 2.56 seconds Time to Throw (Ranked 25th), Sacked 15 times Although the numbers vary by QB from year to year, it seems to me that Wilson has consistently taken a beating no matter how long he holds the ball. And those numbers don't quite line up with other QBs and their sack numbers/hits relative to how long they hold the ball. Pete's offense doesn't scheme receivers open quickly, and Russ frequently had to scramble his tail off to get free to deliver the ball. Those statistics SCREAM O-Line and scheming. yeah it was the right move and I'm a fan of russ, but I'm a hawks fan first. I think denver had fomo with great QBs everywhere and they just got fleeced for a right now, incredible QB but only with only his playstyle. He's 5'10. slower. and no indication of using the middle of the field or check downs to sustain drives. after a whiff with the adams trade, there was no way they would have a good roster without moving on from russ. If the front office never made a move for adams/eskridge and got creed humphry at C, charles cross at LT, abe lucas at RT, with russ on a 50m year contract. it still would have taken at least a year for the line to build solid chemistry. Damien Lewis and Phil Haynes are good guards as well. but defenses will still take away the deep ball as wilson's run game diminishes and injury becomes more likely. Wilson would still want to pass first instead of having a great run game with Walker and Penny if they are healthy, which is absurd because he would have defenses be more honest and he could win more. maybe not mvp, but still a HoF QB with a continuing streak of records broken and maybe more rings with seattle.

Not sure if you missed staying it due to the racial unrest of late, but nobody remembers the rumbling out of the locker room in 2014 that “Russ isn’t black enough.” It took a hot head and loose cannon like Percy Harvin to nearly blow the lid off the discord In the locker room as Russell’s marketing, media chasing and meaningless on camera babbling grew and grew. The LOB couldn’t stand that guy. You could see it in Sherman the year of his injury and with Earl giving Pete the finger. Now we’ve seen Sherman on Thursday night football and his podcasts confirm the distain he has for Wilson, largely for the preferential treatment he received. I believe that the same uncompromising hunger to be the GOAT also shows in Wilson’s ego and need to make the most money, win all the awards and coach from behind center. His stubbornness has caused him 400 sacks because he refuses to evolve with his age and lack of mobility. Early in Shottenheimer’s tenure, he worked with Russ on pocket passing and faster release and it worked for about 5 minutes until Russ went back to and order of the play action scramble with a side of flap-sacks. I don’t believe it was Brady’s cover model wife that caused him to take less money. I think it was Bill Belichick that got him to see the potential in cementing his legacy by allowing Bill to build a better line around Tom with money Tom forfeited. Russ was too proud to take the truly humble move. Russell really wanted a better O-line. The lines he had were average, not great. He made them look horrible with his improvised scrambles and holding on to the ball too long. It got them exhausted and the readjustments got them tired and injured. The trade was a very good thing. We are seeing it play out in Denver as Russ continues to get sacked and won’t change his scrambling ways. I’m thankful for the excitement Russ gave us all in his early years but am absolutely pleased with the trade. It was time, and Russ was never gonna get any better. Well done piece, Mike. So my husband and I are life time Seattlites, we love the Hawks for better or worse. Russell brought us many years of joy and a chance to win every Sunday… With that said he is one of the most polarizing athletes I have ever witnessed. He creates a world without accountability while seeming to have the cleanest of hands. Like most people he can bring you joy if you leave expectations behind and just admire him for what he CAN do. As he got older and wealthier he got more out of touch. He has never told anyone that he wasn’t in it for the cash so how can I be mad when he takes the largest contracts offered him. The thing about QB money is that they don’t have to destroy a franchise if you can supplement the team every year with cheap, young draftees. If you fail as an organization to draft well the world becomes extremely small and impossible to make a run at the championship. Is any of that Wilson’s fault? Not really, but like anything else, his time had an expiration date here in Seattle. I wish him and Ciara well, but can’t say that I will miss them at all. Enjoy the formula Denver, it gets real stale when the wins start to slow down. Go Hawks!

Russ wanted personal stats over team wins. He usually said the right things, but it didn't sound genuine any more and actually caused some locker room conflict. When they had a meeting to change strategy after the loss to Buffalo when he threw multiple INTs and they lost, he did storm out of the meeting.... and the relationship was never the same. He had his agent send that tweet out about teams he was willing to play for. You never do that, so see you later and glad the team traded him for 3 players and multiple draft picks! Earlier this year it finally came out that the SB interception was indeed thrown to the wrong receiver. It wasn't the wrong call - they got exactly the defense they wanted to spring the TE open when the LB blitzed instead of covering, and the TE (Luke Willson) read it, knew it, got open and turned to receive the winning ball.... only to see Russ throw an INT. Luke went into detail about this in an interview on the radio in Seattle this past Spring. So the players did know he blew it and blamed him and was the beginning of the end of the LOB. Just look at Sherman and others pissed on the sideline after. BTW did anyone catch Sherman's rant when Denver lost this season? Now that he's a commentator he was able to yell after Russ blew the win 2x! on similar throws to the end zone... "run the ball!". Fitzpatrick was commenting also, and got up to give Sherman a hug, and told him to get it all out LOL. The real truth is "run the ball" after seeing Russ blow the win with another team = get the ball out of Russ' hands when you are in the red zone.

Yeah, your post is malarky. Russ has two flaws, one of which Pete Carroll ingrained into him because of his offensive distance: (1) Not using the middle of the field enough (but to whom would he pass it?), and (2) not checking down and playing the short game more. Pete’s system often resulted in 3rd & long, which meant Russ has to bail out the team too many times to count. He wasn’t that great on 3rd down but on 4th he was. Russ was relied upon too often to save the team in the 4th quarter. Holding the ball a bit too long was the outgrowth of Pete’s stale offense. Receivers weren’t getting open. Refusing throwaways and holding onto the ball was also an outgrowth of Pete’s system. When you limit a guy to 27 A/G he’s going to look for bigger shots and try to make more plays. He doesn’t want to waste his opportunities. If Phil Jackson only game Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant 15 shots a game, they both would have shot more 3’s! So people should understand Russ on that one. Russ us one of the most gifted, accurate, creative, durable QBs the NFL has ever seen, and he is a fantastic leader. Pete Carroll doesn’t deserve to be an NFL coach. He has never won outside of his time with Russ, and frankly he ruined a dynasty that could have won 4-5 Super Bowls. He has disrespected every star player he has had on the Seahawks not named Cliff Avril or Kam Chancellor. Richard Sherman shouldn’t even be allowed near anything Seahawks IMO…can’t stand the sight of his face!

Denver knows everything about him, and frankly the fact that they’re ignoring all of this should tell you how Pete and John are viewed in the NFL community. They’re generally viewed as being idiots! Why do you think no top free agents wanted to go to Seattke? Why do you think Pete’s firmer assistants never wanted to return to work for him she. He had openings? Pete looking for assistants is like Trump looking for lawyers or entertainment for his inauguration: no one reputable who has options wants that job! Pete isn’t well liked, and no teams ever asked to speak to him after those Super Bowls. Usually, teams try to lure winning coaches away. That’s what theSeagawis did with Mike Holmgren. Why was Pete unwanted in his early 60’s?! Because the league’s front offices know what most fans don’t: that Pete Carroll has an IQ of about 90!
