Just wanna add another unique inciting incident: Rocky starts the inciting incident after a huge chunk of scenes that establishes Rocky as a person, getting you to empathize with him and root for him all the more in what would be an otherwise regular boxing match between two nobodies To further Mac's point, the inciting incident, no, every single part of the plot structure is only there for you to tweak to fit the goals of the narrative.
@MacabreStorytelling4 жыл бұрын
Rocky is a great movie that shows how personal stakes can be just as powerful as external ones. If Rocky doesn’t last the 15 rounds, he’s no better or worse in anyone else’s eyes... but it’s about proving it to himself that he can do it. Fuck gotta rewatch that shit.

"How do we see this as a disturbance to Tony's life" Because it's more important to first show how it disturbed the lives of the hostages, and follow that with Tony representing an America that was disturbed emotionally from thousands of miles away.

I've got a dumb question about inciting incidents because they seem to be something I'm having trouble with. In my spare time, I'm writing a police/detective procedural set in a world with magic (yeah, not terribly original, but I still like the idea). For police procedurals, am I incorrect in thinking that the inciting incident was the murder which may or may not be seen by us, the viewers? The reason I ask is because I've received feedback that there is no inciting incident - which I don't really understand because I open on the corpse as it is being investigated.
@MacabreStorytelling3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the circumstance. As Argo does, the film CAN open immediately with the inciting incident so in this case the murder would be the inciting incident. It sounds like some people expect it to be on pg 10 because all the guides tell them it is supposed to LOL
@DashXero3 жыл бұрын
@@MacabreStorytelling Got it. Thanks! I thought I was going insane.
@cemarz2 жыл бұрын
Inciting incident is just the beginning of the plot. You can do that whenever, but keep in mind that plot is usually the thing that makes the reader want to continue reading. If you have the incident that early and your readers are wondering where it is then you've likely not adequately done it in a way to grab their attention. Could be you start there then go into heavy establishment due to the nature of your genres. That would indicate pacing issues.

Do you think that the inciting incident can happen after an hour? Such as in the Phantom Menace where Qui-Gon discovers that Anakin has immensely high force-sensetivity and decides to help steer him towards the right purpose in life (becoming a Jedi Knight) because he believes that he can become truly great (the chosen one)?
