It makes no sense in terms of evolutionary theory. Black skin is a distinct drawback at high latitudes due to melanin blocking UV and thereby inhibiting synthesis of vitamin D. Lighter skin colour would have rapidly become dominant as populations moved further north. By the time they reached Britain, this process would have been well under way.

Yes but the hunter gatherer diet which is high in vitamin D does support the claim that we didn't need to evolve paler skin to get more vitamin D from sunlight until agriculure was developed which is far lower in vitamin D.. Bones found here in the UK from 10,000 or so years ago found a diet mainly of seafood and hazlenuts,along with small traces of birds eggs and red meat..Hazlenuts along with cashews have the highest vitamin D levels of any plantfood which generally lacks vitamin D since they don't need its protective qualities and cod liver oil is the highest natural source there is,as are eggs and red meat !

Given that Neanderthals lived in the Northern hemisphere during the Ice Age, with limited sunlight, and that it is thought that Homo sapiens underwent depigmentation in the northern hemisphere precisely due to lowered levels of sunlight, this idea that Neanderthals were black seems a bit unlikely. Given that black people are also known to be MUCH more likely to suffer from vitamin D deficiency in Europe due to their skin colour and the levels of sunlight in Europe, the black Neanderthal idea seems even less likely.

Eating a diet primarily comprised of animal products means you get enough vitamin D. Living close to the equator means you get enough vitamin D. But eating a plant heavy diet while also living in a northerly latitude with significant overcast means you're not getting sufficient vitamin D from either the sun or from your diet. And so a selective pressure is exerted in favour of lighter skin pigment
