I've never seen a film which is simultaneously a heartfelt, family drama while being hillarious and absurd. The editing alone which combines the various universes is amazing.

This video is amazing! I love how you’re breaking down the movie, how it was filmed, going through the reviews and analysing it. EEAAO is making history by winning these major film awards, it’s given the Asian community and minorities a voice in Hollywood! Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu’s performances in the movie are just impeccable and fantastic, EEAAO deserves all the love they’re getting! P.S. EEAAO has surpassed Lord of The Rings: Return of The King as the most awarded film in history according to IGN!!!

A24 won a total of nine awards. The studio swept the "top five" awards - Best Picture and the four acting awards. The award wins for Everything Everywhere would signal the end of the popularity and relevance of theatrically-released prestige fare at the ceremony.
@samisfun868
@samisfun868 Жыл бұрын
they actual refer to those top awards as "above the line" awards. those include the screen plays too (so 8 above the line awards adding adapted and original screenplay). in that sense, EEAAO is the only movie in history of Oscar to win SIX ATL awards (pic/dir/actress/sup actor/sup actress/screenplay). as a studio A24 basically swept the ATL with fraser winning actor.

how I got to know about this film is this: I am a Uber driver, in early 2022, I overheard a passenger talking to his friend about EEAAO, "Have you watched this film, it's the best movie of the year!" Then months later, the same conversation occurred for a different couple. That left an itch in my mind that I needed to scratch, because I have never in all my years heard anyone recurringly gushed over a "best movie of the year", not even when Top Gun Maverick, Lord of the Rings, Knives Out, etc, first came out. It must have been a special movie. When I watched it, I was simply blown away and left speechless. I knew it's a groundbreaking movie, it's in my top list, but I did not expect it to win Oscar Best Picture, although in my heart, I wished it would. That's until the waves of youtube reactors kept building momentum, that I felt it might actually win! 1 week before Oscars, I saw a youtuber put a poll of 100 academy voters, EEAAO took 40% of votes, while All Quiet (hmm.... long titles winning) took 2nd place for number of votes, ultimately EEAAO won the preferential voting system, that's when in my heart, I really felt it could actually win. When I watched the reactors, I have never seen such emotional reactions for any film in my memory, it just solidifies the film's appeal and impact on most people, those who don't like it are usually stodgy critics who only praise artsy fartsy movies.

Thank you for making this video. You spoke eloquently. I love the back story of where the idea for the film came from and how/where it was filmed. EEAAO is a good return on investments for A24 (x5 ROI). We have seen many big budget films fail miserably at the box office time after time. So this is a reminder for major studios to not overlook at unconventional scripts and ideas. sequels

everything about this movie makes me cry omg. It's an amazing movie, but I think everyone thought the same thing about the Oscar chances: It's not going to happen. fortunately, we were surprised. As a person who has been following cinema and Oscars for years, I know how difficult it is for a film like this to have this kind of recognition, so I really don't care about any kind of hate it may be receiving, time will show how deserving it was. lastly, beautiful and well done video, congratulations!

Wow, the way you tell the whole story is so engaging to me! Even though it's been my favorite film of all time since it's release, you just made me more invested for the whole crew and cast of EEAAO than I was before. It's like with that film about behind the scenes of "The Room" titled "The Disaster Artist". EEAAO's BTS also sounds worthy of a film to tell.

The most impressive thing is the 38-day shooting schedule. When I first heard about that, I thought there had to be a mistake. The original cut of the film was three hours long, and there are so many costume changes. If you look at how many different Evelyns there are when they all flash on the screen, there are dozens. Some of them are CGI, but most are not. That's just Michelle Yeoh in different costumes. That alone must've taken at least one full day, probably more. How in the world was this only 38 days??? Also, no movies were snubbed this year. EEAAO deserved everything it got. It didn't take any award that belonged to another film. Brendan Fraser deserved his award too, even though I hated that movie, Natu Natu deserved best song, Black Panther deserved costume. I didn't see All Quiet, so I can't comment on that, but while RRR was probably a better, more loved movie, those kinds of movies never win, so All Quiet deserved it by Academy standards. It seems like, since the Me Too movement, the winners, for the most part, have actually been deserving. Green Book happened in the middle of the Me Too movement, so that doesn't count, but starting with Parasite, all the winners have been the right ones. I was really getting tired of the politics and obvious unfairness at awards shows and this was the first time I've watched in many years, but if things keep going like this, I'll actually be invested in them again.

@Westend Greens Extortion "All nominations are solely to promote this Asian affirmative action agenda." I don't necessarily disagree. Having an Asian president probably helps Asian actors and films, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing or unfair. What's unfair are all the Asians who, like Ke Huy Quan, gave up acting because Hollywood didn't have roles for Asians, or the women who never had a chance of winning best director until just a few years ago, or the non-Weinstein indie films that never had a chance of winning anything until the Me-Too movement. EEAAO deserved everything it got. It's one of the best movies of all time. If anyone else was president of the Academy, it might not have been recognized, so I'm glad this "agenda" is happening. Watch the EEAAO sag award acceptance speech for more context as to why we needed this affirmative action. And don't forget that Yeoh is only the second actress of color to win best actress. And according to The Wrap, "only 23 performances by Asian actors have been nominated in the Academy Awards 90+ year history. Four of those... came in 2023." And less than a handful have won. Some things need correcting. Not all change is bad. You're trying really hard to downplay the achievements of everyone involved with this film, but you admit that it's gotten awards at every ceremony, not just the Oscars. So that completely contradicts your assumption that it was the Academy president making it happen. You don't have to like it but don't try to gatekeep. It's pathetic.
@klc7275

@Westend Greens Extortion does that explain why white people win a majority of the awards because a majority of Presidents were white. No of course not. They earned it and EEAAO didn’t earn because their Asian.. It’s pretty obvious why your here. To push your racist conspiracy and push.. let me guess Tar as the better movie. She not a fat lesbian but a predator lesbian so of course she deserved the Oscar…

Thanks for the surprising video. I've seen so many film experts trash the movie, that it was 'trying to be smart' or 'unrelatable' (code for "Asian cast" and unconventional plot), I was worried this was another one calling the movie essentially too big for its britches, which it's not. Glad you explain why it deserves awards on its own merit.

To answer the question simply: no, it's not overrated. It's just one of those movies that got appreciated as it deserves.
@Dear_Everything
@Dear_Everything Жыл бұрын
The word overrated never sat right with me but with this film, overrated is one of the biggest compliments as it is it's biggest fault. Like how other reviewers said, if we support movies like this, we get more films like this, indie films trying something different to break out the mold of cinema. As someone who was a fan of A24's work for watching Swiss Army Men in 2019, it's hard to see this movie get mainstreamed but as well proud to see it's recognition. Like how other reviewers said, watch the movie blind, but now the fact that this film is "overrated", mainstream, that sadly seems impossible now. I pity the people who don't understand this film whether because they're "functional", not Asian, watched the movie due to press instead of watching it when it was still indie and niche, or heard spoilers for the film. I enjoyed this film, inevitability will, enjoyed the trailer when it was first released, knowing inevitability, if I don't watch this film now, or when it releases, my universe multiverse won't forgive me for spending these few specks of time not witnessing this.

With the fast track pacing of this crazy roller-coaster of a movie, there were moment that really felt unique, like when you were knee in the drama ready to let your heart bleed out on the living room carpet and then suddenly the movie shoves hot dogs hands in your face as if someone's tickling from behind when least expected. Like all your emotions are little characters pushing each other to get ahead of the line saying: "me" and then next one pops up "no me" and so on. By the end of the movie along with the succession of emotions I'd been through, I felt strangely tired and sated, it's almost like the words of the Lou Reed song "a perfect day" were a fading echo in my head just leaving on my face the most stupid smile I imagine I could have.

I agree with the difficulty in explaining what the film was about. I saw the trailer when it came out and it definitely became the most excited I was about. And when I saw it, I kept telling people about it, and I always end up with the line, "There was so much happening. It's everything... everywhere, all at once." Getting these "overrated" remark was probably due to it becoming a mainstream film. And when something gets mainstreamed, there will be skeptical people surrounding it.

I think the lesson to be taken away from EEAAO is that a good script, a good story, and committed talents and dedicated specialists will make a good movie. And the key message of the movie: "When you don't know what is going on, be kind." could easily be flubbed and become a meme or satire or overwrought melodrama. Instead it reverberated with the audience, leaving many touched sincerely, and others moved to tears. A movie that can do this deserves an Oscar. Or seven. I do not begrudge Jamie Lee Curtis her Oscar, but a small part of me recognises that it meant Stephanie Hsu did not win. It would have been nice if she got the win too, but objectively, Jamie deserved her win. So I am not too upset. And certainly, Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh deserved their Oscars too! I think the big studios need to be more discerning as to the quality of writing and not to depend on "special effects" to sell their movie. Compare EEAAO to "Avatar - The Way of Water". Or the latest Marvel offering...

It's Crazy Rich Asians that made him decide to try again. You also could have mentioned how rare Michelle Yeoh's and Ke's wins are in nearly a century of Oscars. I've come across references in reputable sources to both figures. Do you have a reference? I think the 25 includes marketing and promotion costs but trying to confirm

You know why you can't believe a movie like EEAAO can win the best picture is because you used a typical western oscar-trope taste when choosing an academy winner movie. We think we have diversity and inclusion at time like 2023 but at the root of it all, it is still just tolerance not really the "real inclusion". Humanity does not have any color.

This was the lousiest movie I have ever seen, to the point that the audience started leaving the movie theatre when it reached two thirds of the film. Yet the biggest blockbuster of the year "Maverick, hardly got any votes by the woke hollywood crowd.

God, I hated to watch this boring pseudo-philosophical movie! Worst Hongkong-Trash-Fake-Tsching-Bum-Bang, whose stupid humor just upset me. Yes, yes, the annoyed, overwhelmed, grumping Chinese woman and launderette operator is in a generational conflict with her pubescent (naturally lesbian) daughter. in their struggle for enforcement. The Chinese Evelyn gives herself a pseudo-American name, but the rest of the actorsand actresses, apart from the tax authority officer (Jamie Lee Curtis) and three customers, are Chinese (Asian), including using their bright, croaking original language. Whole 140 mins. long. And it's all set like a comic in a multi-universe, unfortunately this potentially interesting part isn't what it's all about and comes too short. In each parallel universe, the characters behave and live differently. And none ofthe universes are perfect. Is that supposed to be new? But even that few second clips change by every few seconds, thrown in, just that something different happens very few seconds in the movie. Expensive special effects and some interesting ideas (in one universe they are stones, in another puppets or stick figures...) The direction is pointing to, as I said, Hong Kong gossip rubbish from the 1970s and 1980s. Michelle Yeoh plays mediocre, well. But such a test-tube film is nominated for 7 Oscars???? AACTA, BAFTA, Golden Globes? Oscar for Curtis? Where was everyone looking to? The main thing is WOKE. "Be kind!" was taken too literally in Hollywood with this movie. If I want to see philosophy, please, in "Little Buddha", "The One", "The Golden Child", "The Butterfly Effect", or "Sliders", "Fringe" , "The Man in the High Castle" or "Travellers". And more. The last few years there was only Marvel, so the kids didn't know the older (and better) Multiverse films anymore.
