Consciousness is super weird--how do we take all these signals from the outside world and make them make sense enough to like...be alive?
However--if you examine hearing from a molecular perspective--you’ll begin to see how simple and elegant it is as a sense. We’re traveling deep into your cochlea to meet your inner ear cells and the stereocilia that make it possible for you to hear. Here, you’ll discover that hearing is just a hundred nanometers of protein tugging on a membrane. It is such a small and simple process with incredibly complex consequences.

@@FriesOfTheDead Tell me about it. The algorithm seems to be blend of astroturfing certain videos or channels and short-term "watch and forget" type content. Imagine all the people that don't even try to start a channel because they know it's an uphill battle. Even for established creators it's hard. Woe to the thousands of great channels we're missing out on because they never started in the first place.

The cool part for me is the design of the cochlea. When you hear a sound at say 440Hz, you aren't sensing something 440 times per second. Instead, the cochlea is designed like a "Mechanical Fourier transform". For those who know what a Fourier transform is, you know what's up. But basically, the cochlea like a prism for sound. It splits it up into all of its different frequencies, and each frequency resonates at a particular location. By having 2 chambers filled with fluid of different density, each pitch will focus around a specific location. High frequencies at the start, and low frequencies towards the end. So when you hear a pitch, it isn't a "vibration rate" that you are interpreting, but a location. Different pitches would be like touching your arm in different locations. If you like audio visualizers, your brain doesn't see the waveform, it sees the spectrum analyzer. This is useful because while the brain is powerful, it is abysmally slow. Think of it like a giant processor running at like 100Hz. So it wouldn't be able to interpret a wave form. By analyzing the spectrum instead, it can instead process sounds as "shapes". As I understand it, the human audio cortex is one of the few that is powerful enough to do echolocation. We don't use it much, but you can train it. Blind people are especially good at it because it can more easily link up with an under-stimulated visual cortex and process sound as visual/spatial information. Some people trained in it can see with a high enough resolution to identify cracks in concrete. And the cool part is that it's a 360 degree view, albeit much better towards the front than the rear.

When you think about it everything performs kind of fourier transform accepting some frequencies and rejecting others. Thats how Glass can break from some exact frequency, cause Glass performs FT on a signal and leaves only small part of it (resonate frequency). Human ear doesnt accept for example 30kHz.

@@Clockworkbio Take your time making these videos! I can't express how amazing these videos are as a student that wants to have a more in depth understanding of biology. For me these videos are better than any textbook could ever be. Honestly the only flaw with these videos is that the small movements are bit fast(while it makes you remember that in chemistry molecules are always moving it also makes the shapes slightly harder to understand, so maybe halve the speed? But feel free to continue how you do it right now if you feel that it's better this way). Other than that I honestly can't find anything that can be changed to improve them. Although that is a different set of structures in the inner ear (otoliths and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo BPPV), from my experience as a PT, the ability to hear sound is essential to your balance and how you orient yourself in space. I view hearing sounds as analogous to depth perception. I think spatial awareness becomes gradually more impaired without hearing. I also think that for patients with dementia, it is particularly detrimental to their orientation to time, place, and even themselves, if they cannot hearing sounds to ground them to reality. It is so nice to refresh myself on the physiology with an even deeper understanding of chemistry than when I was taking those classes! thanks for your videos.

I randomly discovered this channel and every video blew my mind. It's seriously insane how random molecules fit together and make extremely specific tasks work so well....it kind of redefines the definition of consciousness to a whole another level As a kid i was so obsessed with science that i used to wake up till 3 in the morning just to catch an episode of curiosity by Neil d tyson. The videos in your channel awakens that same childlike fascination in me 🥰

What surprises me most is the filtering software that must be after those sensors. The signal has to have a lot of noise: The Brownian motion in the liquid is probably already louder than any vibration that has managed to reach the liquid in the cochlea. Apart from blood pressure variations and a lot of other internal noises, however, we hardly hear any of that.

This is why I subscribe to panpsychism. So far literally everything we've discovered in science IS a sum of it's parts. The idea that there's emergent properties of a system that can't be just a sum of it's parts is not just unsupported by anything, it would fundamentally change our concepts of the universe. Also the idea that these emergent properties only appear in biological systems that are either us, or incredibly like us is very very convenient. And would pretty much require a universe designed for life like us. It'd also be an incredibly complex to explain universe, looking much much much more like a really complex and optimised computer system, rather than anything physics has given us. And if argue would almost require a creator(s) as it seems bug free for such a long running complex code. I think instead that perception/experience/qualia/whatever you want to call it - essentially the actual experience of being alone - let's just call it perception (so that would include internally generated perceptions as well, though I would argue the model is always internal, just using the external raw data sometimes). I think instead if we model perception as a raw property of the universe, either a single/all of/some combination of bosons/fermions or an entirely different field/particle/etc we don't understand. So most people then ask "so you think rocks have a perception of reality?". Well I think they probably have a perception of something, but it's just a jumbled mess because it has no feedback loops, or memory, or repeating meaningful computations. Instead what I think separates out us is a computer trying to model what's around it. We have structures that take in data over time in a meaningful and semi-ordered way. We have storage space that then stores this data over time in a way that allows other structures to repeatedly access and make new copies of of it. And we have feedback loops that use the past recent inputs on order decide on outputs etc. This alone would be enough for life with simple perception like following chemical/light signatures and avoiding others - it'd always be stuck in a small instance of time though, essentially it'd always be living (and only be arguing to) live in the now). Also worth noting that these beings will have no individualism at all as they have no long term memory. It's worth noting the above type do not have to be neural networks. They can be single celled, multicellular, silicon/tube/relay/etc CPUs hooked up to small to large outputs running a huge set of programs, etc and plenty of other examples. Then the next level would be systems that have longer term storage, and attempt to also use that in their models of what to do next. Essentially learning. They could also build circuitry (or programming) that internally triggers it. Although you'd want to know whether internally or externally generated else you'd essentially get something like schizophrenia (I wonder if this might be a good model for schizophrenia? You could also abstract it out entirely like a virtual machine and run dreams this way, or run the imagination (day dreaming to internal monologue to problem solving - e.g. sometimes you suddenly figure out the answer to a problem you've been working on while you're doing something completely unrelated, perhaps it has been running in the background). Or course the past few sentences are conjecture - but it's interesting to think that the brain might run virtualised like that. This is why I really like panpsychism and think it fits in much better with our understanding of nature.

It’s geometric, the staircase configuration allows the movement of the taller cilia to pull on the top of the lower cilia and facilitate the ion transfer.

6 years ago I was procrastinating moving forward in learning my material by trying to perfectly understand this mechanism. A new thing I learned from this video is that there really might be a difference between the function of the inner hair cell, and the outer haircells. But, I'm missing the role of the tectorial membrane that is said to sit atop those hairs (and probably is somewhat blocking pores at the top? I'm unsure, it's been 6 years). Also, maybe there's a relation between the locality of the vibration with how sound resonates along tubes. Especially because different object dimensions cause different frequency to resonate. And If I've always assumed that cochleas are like actual snail houses, where the further along you go from its base, the smaller it's diameter will proportionally become.

great explanation of the general mechanism. i'd be curious to know more detail about how the RATE of impulses on that single inner hair cell (e.g. one of the presumably many cells responding to 440Hz) get translated to signals to the cochlear nerve. i'm pretty sure it's not doing the complete translation, like simply signaling "I hear 440Hz". but maybe it's "fire", "fire", "fire" at a 440Hz rate and the auditory center does the translation

It looks like the large cillia is pulling on its smaller neighbor causing it to sweep a larger angle I.e. producing leverage. By the fourth hair the angle is quite pronounced. I’d assume this cascade helps to open the ion channel a little more amplifying the signal. It’s easy not to appreciate the strings of protein linking the cillia together like ropes on a tall-ship. Speaking of which it’s astounding this channel did not get more view relative to the effort. Very grateful, thank you.

Great job! Animations like this improve understanding biochemistry. One question: why you did not mention oval window and tectorial membrane? You don't need to animate them. I consider them important because the first is the region where the stapes pushes the perilymph and then transmits the mechanical wave from a solid to a liquid, and the second because it is the structure that touches the stereocilia and helps to transforms the mechanical stimulus into a chemical signal. My sugestion it to write in the description of the video that the animation is simplified to put in evidence the role of stereocilia in the transduction. I didn't read the paper you mention in the video before I posted my comment. Probably in this paper the authors don't talk about the tectorial membrane and that's why you didn't mention in the video. Besides that, it's still a great video and helps to better visualize (and understand) this incredible phenomena!!👏👏
