Ok before you comment "Japan uses NTSC too" let me clarify. YES I thought NTSC=NA and JP=Japan. BUT if you actually watch and comprehend the video, it's clear I'm referring to a version that's NOT the Japanese version at all. And at the END of the video, my mistake of confusing NTSC/JP actually comes full circle and makes the outcome of the mystery clear. So please DON'T COMMENT Japan uses NTSC cause I KNOW now for future content.

people make this mistake a lot, its because "super nintendo" has pal and ntsc variants so people say ntsc to differentiate the european and north american systems, of course japan is ntsc too, but they have a "super famicom" meaning the distinction was made by the name of the machine. so a lot of people misuse the term NTSC when referring to the NA region.

You Reposted in the Wrong Neighbourhood I recall hearing Earthbound 64 was estimated to be about 60% complete before cancellation, but I don’t really have any evidence to back that up except for Wikipedia, which isn’t the most reliable source for things like this. I really want to believe a ROM or beta cartridge with the ROM still on it exists, but likelihood is that any copies that exist have been lost, destroyed, or locked away somewhere in Nintendo’s archives. I don’t think there is no hope that it exists, but even if it does we probably won’t ever be able to see it. There is chance that Nintendo may release clearer footage of it, but actually intentionally releasing the ROM is probably out of the question.

Saw this video again tonight, just a thought as the Super Gameboy 2 works on a US system. it's quite possible that QVC imported a bunch from Japan and had them modified to fit US consoles, especially as all that was needed was filing a groove in the back. QVC were importing stuff from Japan at the time, I bought a bunch of Manga in Japanese from them around that time, mostly Pokemon comics.

There's other factors that lead to it never existing, the device wasn't created until 1998, NoA's final SNES product was released in 1995, NoA always have a decisive cut off point for technology, so they can concentrate on promoting next gen games. But you know Sod's law will have someone posting up a video of them playing on a US Super Game Boy 2 about ten minutes after you upload this video? :D

But Larry, what about the Snes jr. or Kirby's Dreamland 3, or the Taito developed nintendo published Arkanoid: Doh it again? Nintendo did drop the Snes to focus on the N64 around 1996, but they returned to promoting the system when they aimed it as a budget alternative to the N64 around 1997. Not to mention pokemon was Super Gameboy compatible and the only way to play it on the TV before stadium was via super Gameboy. Considering the Super Gameboy 2 was designed with pokemon in mind, it wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo considered releasing it to coincide with the NA release of red and blue. Pokemon Stadium, and the release of the gameboy color were probably what ultimately killed a US version from ever existing.

Don't say NTSC, Japanese games were also NTSC. That's why most people say NA for North America. For an instance, MJR didn't find an NTSC N64DD as the Japanese N64DD were also NTSC, he found a North American or NA N64DD. Maybe you should change the title and put some notes on the video. I was confused when I saw your the first time. I thought, why is the NTSC SGB2 a mystery?, is it about the hidden features? Is it about something hidden in the code? Or did he just mean NA SGB2? Good video, nonetheless. Never heard there was such a rumor.

I know this is quite a dated video now, but here me out, this is another possible answer to this rumour: QVC and shopping channels are notorious for fact checking incorrectly. When it comes to technology, especially in this 90s/2000s they would always get a good chunk of specs wrong. I used to watch pricedroptv, a British equivalent to QVC and every time a phone would be featured, 9/10 they'd get something wrong e.g. they would say a Sony Ericsson phone has a 2.0MP camera when really it was a VGA, cheaper more lower end model but would use 'general data' of the average specs of a Sony Ericsson phone of the time. As a general rule you'd almost always expect the info to be slightly wrong, they did it for sat navs, cameras, phones... each and every one had something wrong. So what probably happened is Zerothis, as a child, was presented a grey Super Gameboy 1 on QVC (hence he believed the US NTSC variant was grey, unlike the Japanese variant) and then the presenters of this likely claimed it was a SGB2 or at least claimed it had the features of Super Gameboy 2 by accident due to poor/not very careful product research, Zerothis then goes out and buys the Super Gameboy 1 in store (he saw no difference when purchasing the product, further making me believe it is likely the SGB1 QVC were selling with misinformation, though he was a child as a kid when you love video games you know these small differences in fact you're more likely to notice these small differences, bc you obssess over these things until your parents buy you said game/accessory etc) and then notices it doesn't have the features stated.

Perhaps somebody at QVC had acquired a few Super Gameboy 2s and hoped to sell them in the states before it was released here officially. Noting that they were NTSC, they might have thought they were American Versions. Probably no one bought them and they were expunged from the records after realizing their mistake. *A similar thing happened to me* My local Walmart actually sold "Pokemon Diamond GB" the telefang bootleg in its glass case. Even with no knowledge of it prior, I knew it was fake. Some Chinese Supplier probably had it on a shipping manifest and ignorant Walmart employees figured it was legitimate or someone who worked there was trying to make a quick buck. When you could find a Digimon Branded Beyblade knock off at a 99 Cents Store, everything and anything is possible I guess. *On a Different Note* Does anyone remember websites called "Nintendoland" and "Planet Zebes" back in the early to mid 2000s? They had forums, fan art, a history of Nintendo Products, an in browser Metroid Pet (giga pet?), news and etc. Nintendoland is now an official Nintendo site and PlanetZebes is some weird baby clothes store. They used to be my go to for Nintendo news and rumors.
@hdofu7 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna agree this is most likely a rumor, if it was sold on qvc there would be numbers of them produced (even if a limited run I believe they have a set number of inventory they require before they will offer up items) that at least a few examples would be out in the wild today. What could be possible would be a misprint on the page for the item possibly taking information provided for features not actually included. It wasn't that uncommon to list things not in existence (still waiting for my Super Mario Advance 4 E-reader series 3 and 4 cards to come)
@pokepress7 жыл бұрын
David Brailsford yeah, in order for it to be sold there, I would expect them to have had an inventory in at least the thousands, in which case I think we’d be seeing a unit or two on eBay with a US-shaped cartridge every now and again.
@PuffyRainbowCloud6 жыл бұрын
Actually, could it not be possible that QVC did sell the Japanese model at some point? That they got a hold of some limited stock, maybe from a shady third party? Japan is NTSC-J, so it would still be an NTSC product.

they could have also filed out the region lock which was just plastic tabs making it work in the us

+PuffyRainbowCloud if this had happened, there'd be units out in the wild on sites like ebay, theres too much interest in retro consoles and dealing in them for this item if it had existed for not a single example to be out in the open. If it was even a super rare low items available surplus they'd still have documentation people would have made and some sales since then other places. Theres just overwhelming evidence this does not exist. That's not to say it's impossible... only extremely unlikely.

I'm asking you something I asked some time ago on your "Jay Douglas" Falcon video. Years ago, in an article about the history of many Nintendo characters from an Italian videogame magazine called Cube, I found a weird fact. I'll tell you, it could be anything, but the one thing I know it's not is a false memory. It's certainly possible that he missremembered a couple details, but he wouldn't create a memory like that from scratch. When the brain creates memories from scratch, it's usually a form of protecting itself from a trauma or something. And forgive me for the sarcasm, but I don't see how faking a memory of an obscure peripheral could protect someone from a traume. Needless to say, I don't think that's the case. What may be that case is that it doesn't have anything to do with memory but rather the model he saw on tv was a modified japanese SGB2 or even a modified SGB1 of any region.
@SilverScaleMA3 жыл бұрын
@@eymed2023 either that or he mistook the older SGB for the SGB2 and what he saw was the American version of the peripheral for the SGB. Especially with his explanation of "he got one that he thought was the same but wasn't". It probably was but since he assumed the one on tv was for the SGB2 then they must have been different. QVC does occasionally have sales for older products at a highly discounted price so they could have been having a sale and since it was around when the newer version was coming out (or would have been) then that is where the confusion came in. But at this point he has defended and insisted that his perception was correct for so long it would be very hard for him to admit he might have been mistaken.
@eymed20233 жыл бұрын
@@SilverScaleMA That could be the case. But I think the simplest explanation is that the advertisement he saw used a japanese SGB2 to advertise the american SGB1. Maybe the advertisers tought no one would notice the difference. So it wouldn't be unreasonable for a viewer to assume they'd be selling the SGB2 in the USA. If we could find the advertisement in question, it could provide the answers.

NTSC =/= Usa NTSC is the a of televison system japan is also a NTSC region so we already know were they are but we don't know where the american ones are
@ArabellaFlynn7 жыл бұрын
Not likely. NTSC and PAL systems use different refresh rates (60 Hz vs 50 Hz), different number of scan lines (525 vs 625) and different ways of transmitting the color part of the picture. PAL televisions tend to be more tolerant of different scan rates than NTSC ones are, but even if you could get the picture to stop rolling, it would be in black and white.
@quayzar17 жыл бұрын
There are adapters that allow NTSC SNES and SFC games work on Pal systems at the lower clock speed and frame rate of PAL regions by using a PAL cartridge for timing and a NTSC cartridge from ROM data but I'm not sure if it would work with a Super Gameboy. There appear to be projects that are trying to build an in cart solution but I haven't seen anyone use the method I mentioned and I live in the US now.
@quayzar17 жыл бұрын
Thanks for mentioning this. Japanese NTSC-J is 100% compatible with the North American NTSC-M and is effectively the same except for a lower black blanking level. Adjusting brightness levels is the only requirement.
@Janni90097 жыл бұрын
In the SNES case: Pal games on any NTSC device shouldnt be a problem except for the tabs in the slot. NTSC-U on Pal: Well, we have the Action Replay for that case, just put a pal game in the back and the NTSC game on top, and no hardware mods required. not even the lockout chip can do anything against it. NTSC-J on Pal: Works straight out of the box mostly, sometimes the action replay v2 (with the SuperFX extra pins) is required tho from my experience. I think FM2000 meant that the Super Gameboy released in Japan is literally NTSC. Japan uses NTSC-J for analog video wheras the US uses NTSC-M. The only difference is a small shift in white balanced and different RF channel assignments. That's why you have to tune your North American TV well into the UHF range to play your import Famicom.
@mechamicro6 жыл бұрын
How to turn the TV into UHF range?
@seancdaug6 жыл бұрын
Nguyen Minh On an old analog TV, anything above channel 14 was considered UHF. The only real difference between UHF and VHF were the frequencies at which the signal was broadcast: the higher the channel number, the higher the frequency. Japan used to use a frequency range that started higher than the range used in the USA, so a low channel assignment for Japan would have been considerably higher, well into the UHF range, on a US set. The VHF/UHF distinction was fairly arcane, even before the HD/digital switch in the late 2000s (which rendered the whole thing moot). Initially, TVs were built to only receive VHF signals, so they simply couldn't pick up any channels above 14. The UHF range was subsequently opened up, but the first couple of generations of TVs that supported it did so by way of an entirely separate tuner. In short, you had two different dials to change channel. By the 1980s, most TVs had gotten to the point where it was all handled internally and I wager most people weren't even aware of the distinction between VHF and UHF after that.
@ErinGoBragh09306 жыл бұрын
US and Canada use NTSC-U/C, not M. It has more to do with voltage, less about video signals. PAL uses more power, so a PAL game would require a PAL console to work. But, they cannot work in the US or Japan, without a step-down voltage converter, because our power outlets do not supply a high enough voltage. And, vice versa.

Unlikely. The N64 DD was planned to be released in the NA region from the beginning and it would had been released during the N64 time period if it would had been a success in Japan (which didn't). On the other hand, by 1998, the SNES was pretty much discontinued to favor the N64. Only a couple of games were released in early 1998: Kirby's Dreamland, a Tiertex game based on the Lion King and the Majesco version of Frogger. After that, everything else never had an NA release, not even Rockman & Forte which could have had good sales. For Nintendo of America there was no market for a peripheral that wasn't the N64 or the GBC in 1998, especially to cover a need that was not yet in America. The reason there was an SGB2 was Pokémon, that's the reason it had the Game Link port, to ease the exchange of pokemons (this feature would later inspire the N64 Transfer Pack). Pokémon arrived in America in 1999. It's a completely different situation than the N64 DD. It was a Mandela Effect case, that Zero guy probably saw the SGB2 somewhere else on TV but somehow he believes it was QVC.

Yeah sorry ZeroThis but I doubted this the second "QVC" was said. It sounds like he was a young kid when he saw it on QVC in 1998/1999... but QVC was on a lot in my house when I was younger that's all my grandmother would watch 24/7 and she would buy things from it constantly. She knew how much my uncle and I loved video games and how my uncle always wanted the latest thing for the consoles and would have snatched this up as that's how she did all her gift shopping. Also QVC had a lot of deals on Furbies during that time and I really feel like that it would be more well remembered because a lot more people, young kids and even teenagers like I was at the time, were watching QVC to catch when the furbies were on before they sold out (either to beg for one or to let their parents know they were on again to buy for gifts.) There at least would have been older electronics collectors picking them up who were on there for some of the the hot items that came out around that time if it were real.

Yo NTSC isn't the right term here. The japanese version of the super gameboy 2 was also NTSC, I have one that's been modified to work on an american SNES. US and Japanese TVs used NTSC, Europe used PAL. edit- welp.... nvm

You should try to find information on Future boy Conan, a anime from 1979 by the famous Hayao Miyazaki. The show was dubbed in multiple languages by animax, however the english dub is lost. The show shows up in their website through the internet archive, aswell as a 3do game from the 90s having a very short clip of the english dub. Other than that, we consider the english dub of this show lost. It's an amazing show and I'd love to see it uncovered!

Hey, despite watching a lot of your videos, I can't remember if you've tracked down any lost videogames, but I figured there's no harm in asking: Back in 2001 there was this canceled Lego Bionicle game, which before the fan site BZPower was taken offline for an extended period of time in I believe 2010 we did have someone who had proof he had the game (you can still find the videos on KZbin) and wanted to release it, even seemed to have a plan in that regard, but we weren't able to coax him into releasing his copy before the site went down, and to the best of my knowledge he never came back after the site went back up. So of course what I'm asking is that if you feel like it, I would really love it if you could track down a copy of that game. It would be awesome to finally have that game come to light. EDIT: In case you do, the guy's KZbin seems to be MarkOfMoD but I think he went by deepbrick on BZPower

He most likely did see the SGB2. QVC was notorious for selling Japanese related things. They sold Japanese Pokemon cards all of the time.
@mario64remix6 жыл бұрын
In that case he couldn't have been the only one to have seen it. Yet, nobody else remembers anything.
@DaAmazinStaplr6 жыл бұрын
It could have been one of the broadcasts that was on super late at night, as in 1 o'clock in the morning. One of the broadcasts I've seen in the past was a set of Japanese Pokemon cards and the only reason I remember it was because the set containing Marill and all of the rumors about "Pikablu" before Gold and Silver was released in the US, so I begged my mom to buy it (which was an obvious no).. It's doubtful that anyone has any info on that particular QVC sale or even remembers it.

NTSC is the TV format used in North America *and* Japan, so saying it didn't get an NTSC release is incorrect. I'm sure the rest of the video is good as usual (I'm only a minute and a half in), but that really bothered me.
@derekwildstar15727 жыл бұрын
It's because the japanese one it's called NTSC-J, but yeah you're kinda right :p
@derekwildstar15727 жыл бұрын
LSuperSonicQ It's ok, here in Brazil for example we use PAL-M and it's completely different from the european PAL. And Japan uses NTSC-J, not NTSC. To avoid confusion, let's just call it as "American SGB2" haha
@monkeywithocd7 жыл бұрын
DerekWildstar- NTSC is the base name which includes all variants like NTSC-J. The Version used in North America is NTSC-M, so my point remains valid. Though thank you for that information, because otherwise I might not have bothered to look into NTSC's differences in other regions. For those curious, NTSC-J seems to differ from NTSC-M mainly in it's black level being lower, thus brightness would be slightly off if viewing an NTSC-J signal on an NTSC-M device.
@monkeywithocd7 жыл бұрын
Rolando Royster - Because when a lot of this technology was being made we didn't have the technology for easily sharing information like we do today. Because of this, when things like power, computer, and television technology were starting to be standardized, areas would decide on their own what to do instead of coming to some worldwide consensus, and so we had technologies that, though similar, were developed parallel to each other without any, or at least little, thought to what other territories were doing. Also, NTSC was developed to be backwards compatible with the older standardization for black & white TV transmissions so that people who already owned back & white TV sets wouldn't be effected by the transition to color, where as PAL was built from the ground up for color. EDIT: After glancing on the Wikipedia page, it appears Europe did consider using NTSC, but decided against it due to some downsides with NTSC that would really prove difficult given their environment. I'm guessing that had they gone with NTSC, they still would have had to modify it slightly (NTSC-N/NTSC50 or PAL-N I'm guessing would be the closest thing we have to what that would be), due to differences in their power system and likely improvements they would make regardless to make it work better in their environment. Sorry if that was a bit rambley, but I just wanted to give you some of the basics. The history of all this is really fascinating and I highly suggest you look up more specific information if you're interested. TL;DR - Global standardizations for technology is a relatively really recent occurrence, and due to the logistics of trying to change fundamental standards, like for instance power, we are still stuck with a lot of technology decisions that were made before we started making global standards. TL;DR EDIT - Also, humans historically can't agree on anything, even in the best of conditions. =P

Actually it probably was ntsc. As "NTSC" is actually just an electricity standard. 60 htz to be exact, and ntsc power is common in Japan. The electricity standards of a country is something that was engrained into the design of the powerplants. Also sad to see this isn't true. This was during that time when Nintendo thought Americans didn't like cool stuff.

Maybe the author saw some info about the (Japanese) SGB2 being NTSC, thought it was talking about an American version since people usually equate NTSC with America, and ended up creating a false memory about QVC and writing about it. That's the only thing I can think of as to where this rumor came from.
