Just a little tip. I took both advertising/marketing and journalism programs in College. Journalism grad, one year off from advertising grad. Anyways, I learned twice that there's a bit of a trick in contacting people in some cases. You're actually supposed to avoid exclamation marks if you have any hope of getting a response. Neurologically, it makes the sender look more desperate, almost as if they're the type who would constantly nag at the person they get a response from. Little things like this seem unimportant, but there are many ways in which our brains connect to certain visual cues. That's just a little suggestion for ya. Take with a grain of salt or ignore it, just wanted to give some insight!

The contest finished on March 18 1996 (source: the damn video), and it has a pic of a Genesis game as the "game you might make". Sega only published like 8 games after that for the Genesis so I'd look at the credits section in those, although from the ones I went through there wasn't anything special so you may have to dig through the QA and "special thanks" sections. Note that sometimes the winners of these things aren't always the friendliest- the winner of a contest where you got paid 25k if you had a "lucky" Vectorman cartridge was in jail for "CON AGGRAV BATTERY W/DEADLY WEAPN OR RESULT GBH/DEATH" among others

I remember very clearly when this commercial was airing on television. Ironically it rarely came on during the actual fox kids shows, it much more commonly aired during the Ricky Lake afternoon talkshow, that followed Power Rangers and Animaniacs. I remember trying to capture it on VHS tape for days, and having to watch this boring "adult show" I really didn't care about everyday for over a week. You see, at the time I was drawing my own video game in my sketchpad and I thought this was my chance to make it into a reality. This really took me back. I must admit though, perusing this comment section it's kind of funny that something that is such a vivid memory to me, is so obscure and considered myth and Legend to a lot of you.

I spent the day looking over the manuals of the Genesis games that would be the likely candidates, and I have found nothing in the "special thanks" sections: all the thanks are to Sega affiliated people. However, in the Vectorman 2 manual, in the thanks section there is listed a Theresa Woodberry. She is not connected to Sega in any way, so she may be who we are looking for. The only problem is that because she would have been a child when this contest was running, she may have a different last name now if she is married.

I was actually in the right age range to watch Fox Kids in '96, although admittedly, I don't remember this contest. It does remind me of a similar contest from the early '00s, that was in conjunction with a soda (I'm fairly certain it was Dr Pepper); in which the winner would make a cameo appearance in a Gamecube game. I've always wondered who won that and what game they cameoed in, as it feels like it could be a spiritual successor to the Chris Houlihan room.

It's funny seeing this video, because it reminded me of a contest I entered for Donkey Kong Country. They were apparently holding a contest for character design on the newest Kong and I entered it, my Kong had a rocket launcher for an arm that they could use as an attack and as a double jump via the explosion. I am the person who won this contest. My name is John Bishop, from Andalusia, AL. They flew me and my dad to Sega headquarters in San Francisco where I got to play test Vectorman and BUG! for Sega Saturn on which I was credited for being a play tester. I also received a Saturn, Genesis and Game Gear with 30 games. We also had a party at McDonald's where we recorded a commercial that aired in the region. The game was never made. It was meant to be a 2d side scroller similar to streets of rage/double dragon but with extended combos and special moves similar to Mortal Kombat. We contacted the studio several times and they were very elusive about why the game was never made. Eventually we just let it go but this was very disappointing and still irks me to this day. If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer. I was just reflecting on this and am amazed to see that people were curious about it. This is so wild to me that you made a video about this!! Haha I don't know why I never looked into this before. I never thought people would be so curious about it.

Hey there! I might post about it on the Lost Media forums, but I have an extremely obscure piece of "lost" media. Probably about 6-7 years ago, I was at my grandparents house and my parents had some random home diy type show on in the background of us getting ready in the morning. My sister was having my dad fix her hair in the room and then the people on the show start talking about how easy it was to make this weird rice pillow. Then, some person on the side says "It's so easy, it pumps it all the way up from DIY, to D-I-E! Everybody!" Everyone there just looked at her weird and then continued like it didn't happen. Since I wasn't in the room when that happened, I've always wanted to see it because I couldn't even write this without laughing at it. Please tell me if you can help. If you need any more information, I can give you as much help as I can. I love Lost Media so so so much. That's why I love this channel. Please let me know if you can help me see this video. I want it so bad.

Theory: The sweepstakes seems to be pushing Vectorman pretty hard, showing it throughout the commercial, and offering it as a prize. Is it possible that the game that the winner got to see created was Vectorman 2? If anyone has a copy of the manual or can pull up the credits for either game, it might give us a possible winner. Keep in mind the winner was sent to Sega of America headquarters, rather than Sega of Japan. That also narrows down the options of what game the winner got his name published in. Also the sweepstakes was held in 1996, and the Sega Saturn and Genesis were discontinued in 1998. Its unlikely the Sega of America team was working on anything Dreamcast related until around 1998. I think Vectorman 2 would be a good place to start. The game was released in November 1996, developed by an American studio associated with Sega of America, and is the direct sequel to Vectorman, which was heavily featured in the Sweepstakes. BUG! TOO would also be a good place to start, since it the original was featured in the commercial, was released December 1996, and was even developed in house at Sega.

I actually remember seeing ads for this contest in the 90s. Always wondered what came of it. Having worked in TV for more than a decade now, I’m sure promoters and advertisers wouldn’t know what became of the winners because their job is just to set these things up, not necessarily facilitate them. I guess we’ll just have to read every Sega manual in existence until we find some mention.

Wait, hold up, when did they choose the winner of the contest exactly? The tour must have been held not long after that! So they should be credited in a game that was late in development at that point, as they wouldn't likely announce their still secret projects to some kid that walks in. Meaning the game would be released in '96 or early '97. Which games are this? Is this on the American Sega Genesis? This narrows the search for a game down quite a bit, right? Should be developed in-house and released in 1996/early 1997 in the states. Furthermore, there must have been some public relations-guy/gal from SEGA involved with this, maybe he/she has a LinkedIn too? Two more possible leads we really have to consider!

Even if it is Saturn, I think this isn't too bad of an idea. It would almost definitely be a game released in North America, and it looks like that's only about 30 Sega developed games for Saturn + the few Genesis titles so late in the system's life. I guess it could potentially be Dreamcast too, but I kind of doubt that. Now of course if we also include games published by Sega, this increases the numbers a bit.

@TheInsanityChamber6 жыл бұрын
One of the big problems is this was an American contest, so it is assumed Sega HQ was Sega of America, who didn't actually make their own games. The phrase "crank out a brand new Sega Video Game" leads me to believe it's not a arcade port. It would also be assumed that it was a game released in 1996, but after April (as the contest winner was Drawn March 18th). So that leaves up with 1 Genesis Game (Vector Man 2 [Released Nov 1996]) and 3 Sega Saturn Games (Three Dirty Dwarves [Released Sept. 27, 1996], Mr. Bones [Released Oct 18th, 1996], and NBA Action [Released June 1996]). All those dates are for the NA release. I am leaning more towards the Saturn games, as a Saturn was one of the prizes the Grand Prize winner would get (as the other winners would only get a Sega Genesis). Now just a matter of finding manuals and crossing referencing names to see if they appear in other Special Thanks, and then whittle the list down to those one off names.

I always wondered what happened with this! I remember telling my mom my elaborate game design ideas and thankfully she was trying to tell me "don't count your chickens before they hatch, you're probably not going to win." In retrospect, of COURSE it would just be a studio tour and getting your name in the credits. The idea of developing a full-fledged retail game on the whims of some random 10-year-old is ludicrous. On the other hand, I'm now good enough at game programming that I could actually create my original game idea...

I looked for the winner one night but couldn’t find anything significant. Anyone remember that? I think it was Energizer the battery company that did it. Have a good one everybody!

I still can't believe I won first place in that 4Kids Bratz sweepstakes! I won a red remote controlled car that you could put your Bratz dolls in

Great video, liking and subscribing. I remember there was also a snes kool-aid contest. Said that you would start in the video game and you'd make your own story, anyone else remembers that one?

This reminds me of another "Create Your Own Game" Sweepstakes that I remember, however I can't remember if it was from Lunchables or Caprisun (or maybe even neither).

Hey I got an idea how about you find sega games manuals of the games that were released after the giveaway and you might find a name that credited as a winner of the giveaway or something similar

Nintendo ran a similar contest via Kool-Aid back in the 90’s if I recall correctly. I believe I also remember reading in Zillions (the kids’ version of Consumer Reports they used to have) that no winner ever came forward for that one.

I actually remember that contest in the day (I actually had the SEGA Channel at the time for the Genesis). My first thought was, "Yeah, we'll never hear about this again, nor who won, and it's all probably a sham."

I basically just watched fox kids for Digimon and didn't really get big into it till like 2000-2001. Watched quite a bit of WB kids for Pokemon but my childhood was definitely ruled by Nickelodeon back when it was on fire! Pretty cool contest idea though, could be so easily done nowadays with how streamlined indies are!

The Saturn was already out but the box image they used was for a Genesis game? Weird.

I remember Fox Kids holding a contest for Los Luchadores where you could win a Lobo Furetre costume and a chance to meet the cast. The show isn't particularly well remembered and ended after a season. Really have no clue if anybody actually won

I remember this promotion! I don't remember it being promoted on Fox Kids, but I do remember seeing it being promoted at a McDonalds when I was a kid. Probably because of its connection with McWorld. I wanted to enter the contest, but never did.

I vaguely remember this contest and the one for X-Men 2: Clone Wars. With that one, I seem to recall runners up would win a copy of the X-Men 2: Clone Wars cartridge, while the grand prize was an arcade cabinet port of the game. I recall trying to call in to win at least a copy of the game, but could never get through.

My initial thought was that Sega already had a game made before this commercial, and that they would fake a contest winner, then release the game as the "winner". Though i dont see any benefits to that idea.

I think nekomarulupin might be onto something. There was a "contest winner" screen in Vectorman 2, released around that time, displaying a drawing of a fanmade Vectorman form.

I have a mystery for you. Back around 1995 or so Cartoon Network ran a contest for a special edition Space Ghost Hot Wheels car. I wanted it badly, but I don't remember them announcing the winner. They were suppose to announce the winner, but maybe it got cancelled.
@leepinlepin4 жыл бұрын
The winner (if there even was one) would most likely have their name mentioned in a game manual for the Sega Saturn, by 1996 Sega wasn't focused on releasing games on the Genesis but instead the upcoming Saturn

Since you did a music lost media episode, I was wondering what you thought of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor missing 1994 demo tape. A lot of hype is behind it about finding the thing, and I haven't really seen a video done regarding the subject.

What?! That’s the most absurd contest prize ever. They’re just going to make a game out of the blue? That would take at LEAST a year and cost tons of money

I remember that contest. I entered it and found out that I didn't win it during the credits of one of the shows (most likely Animaniacs). The music playing in the credits volumed down and played an audio recording of the phone call someone from Fox Kids made to the contest winner, telling that him he had won. I don't remember the name of the kid who won, it was so long ago.
