I am in a fibromyalgia flare and took pain medicine about half an hour ago. I literally just stopped this video midway through, set my timer for 5 minutes, got out of the chair and.... 1. flipped my laundry to the dryer, 2. picked up my work stuff from the dining table, 3. hand washed a few dishes, 4. cleaned the kitchen sink and wiped over the stovetop, 5. fixed myself a cup of tea. Ok... it took me 8 minutes... but THANKS FOR THE MOTIVATION when I physically feel terrible! Now I can sit and enjoy my tea and feel good about myself.

Dawn... My husband is a librarian at our local city library and it just opened to the public yesterday for the first time in a year. Because of your inspiration with what I've done around our home, my husband has totally transformed the city library. He decluttered a ton of books and tidied the whole place up. Everyone is just amazed by the transformation and it has improved our city library so much. Your impact is so far-reaching... thank you from Richmond California

I know not everybody has the ability to get to the clothes as soon as the timer goes off, but if you do, I highly recommend giving it a try. Warm clothes can be very pleasant!

I watched this video at 11:30 at night. I got out of bed and said I was going to work for five minutes in my closet. I was working where I couldn’t see a clock so I asked Alexa to set a timer. I kept pushing myself as I kept saying, “I can do five minutes.” Finally exhausted, I asked Alexa how much time I had left. That girl never set a darn timer! I finished one last thing and came out to see my five minutes turned into twenty five minutes! I’m back in bed and am going to sleep good because 1. I’m really tired now, 2. I don’t see my cluttered closet from here, and 3. I ate part of my frog today (aka the closet). Thanks Dawn! 😂

And I have to say when I want to put something off, that should take only 5 minutes, I always run that quote through my head and get the job accomplished. My husband and I had "the" virus in Feb and March and it required hospitalization for both of us. We both have long haul issues. Since getting out of the hospital I have been forced to clean this way. Do what I can for 5-10 minutes and then rest. Sometimes I dread getting up so much, but you are exactly right. The mental and emotional boost I get from accomplishing the tasks are worth pushing myself. I've done so much purging of stuff since coming home, 5-10 minutes at a time.

Unoffensive Username - I was doing great with washing the dishes every night and putting them away in the morning UNTIL my hot water heater quit working very well. It would heat one tank of water and then quit. Been doing that for a couple of months now so today, I called to have it replaced. Tomorrow I'll regularly have hot water again and will be able to enjoy getting the dishes done every night! now on to the next 5 minutes...

Decluttering your home makes cleaning EASIER! 100% true fact! I have done this. Now not only is my home easier to clean, it stays clean longer. AND I have time and energy to tackle bigger cleaning items I used to put off for 😳 years. Like: sealing our granite counter tops, cleaning doors and blinds, thoroughly cleaning cabinet fronts. I’m not too tired, or overwhelmed, to tackle these bigger jobs now, because my regular house cleaning is so much easier. Listen to Dawn! Try it!

Yes! You nailed it! I look at the mess and have no idea where to start because it’s overwhelming… so I say I will do it when…. “When” passes by…then comes the feelings that I am stressed, I feel lazy, and think what a failure I am because “everyone else does it”. Sitting in a cluttered, messy home…no peace! I think of everything I need/should do. It’s a vicious circle. Thank you for the video.

That emptied two full shelves in and upright pantry which got repurposed for boxes of crackers etc that fit better. The towels just got a new home in a bin under the sink. Yay!

I have always been a bit Minimalish but since I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia I cannot do the things I want to do. I was always a Busy Bee like you. When I finally get up (most days nearly noon as don’t sleep well) I tidy the kitchen counter let the dog and cat again and open windows in five mins. It’s easy with 2 of us as only our stuff .Then if having bad day I split it up in shifts - washing in washing out. Prepare food for evening meal. Cook evening meal. Tidy sofas etc before bed. It’s amazing what I can do as started the “Swedish Death Clean a year ago. Been astonished at how satisfying it is cleaning a little everyday which really keeps most things clean, and how that feeling may not be as intense but it lasts a lot longer - like a short term dopamine hit vs. long term contentment. 5 minutes of accomplishment is more satisfying than 5 minutes of even great new ideas, but with your videos I can do both! You are so right, Dawn! Once I made some progress on decluttering my rooms, tidying became much easier, and it only takes a few minutes. I still enjoy and benefit from decluttering/cleaning videos, so now I treat them as a reward. I do my morning tidying and cleaning first, then if I want to watch a video, I can. During the day, if I want to watch a video, I do some decluttering first. Otherwise, I find that it's too easy to fall down the rabbit hole of watching videos instead of actually making progress. It's also made me more selective about which channels I follow. Plus...most videos last more than 5 minutes. Doing 5 minutes of tidying up or decluttering first or instead of watching videos makes sense if you want to continue making progress.

You see, we have all these ugly drips inside the glass of our oven door, and this was ABSOLUTELY the season we were determined to tackle that mess. (The words “How hard can it be?” were definitely uttered.) Then we watched this absolutely riveting, horrifying video a nice ADHD couple just like ours made about their adventures with this task. Actually, it might be helpful to teach the children to fold their own. Even starting with the sorting of the socks would be helpful, for younger children, perhaps. I remember, as a VERY little girl, my mother doing the laundry for my new baby sister. LONG diapers in those days. Mother would hang them up, and my job was to straighten them on the line, while she went to the next one. Then, pinning the socks with the clothes pins onto a part of the clothesline that was just my size, near the porch rail. I used to BEG to be allowed to help dry the dishes, (when I was smaller), while my older siblings were drying. Dad would put a towel on the table, and put the (safe) silverware, (NO sharp knives yet!), and the plastic glasses there for me to dry. To this day, I am the dishwasher of the household -- (mostly put the stuff in the dishwasher), and I don't mind the laundry. I think it's helpful to count the blessings: I HAVE dishes-and-clothes to wash, some people don't; some people don't even have HOMES. As far as laundry, I like to remind folks that at least you don't have to take it all down to the creek and beat it against a rock . . . Blessings we forget about . . . ; ) Th, 04/29/2021

I always thought it sounded kind of infantile and doubted whether it would work to motivate me in real life. I now realize that I've spent hours watching more cleaning and decluttering videos in the last few weeks, meanwhile making no progress with my spring decluttering which I abandoned midway through. It's just SO hard to get started, and then I beat myself up about being lazy. And now I'm thinking - what if I'd just done 5min a night for the past month - where would I be now?! So yes, I WILL give your 5min tip a try 😊. Thank you for the motivation!!
