I started going to Arsenal in 1968 and grew up going to Highbury and still have a season ticket at The Emirates. Contrary to your information, when I started going, the capacity of the ground was 63,000 and at it's peak it was 73,000. The plaque commemorating Constable Alex Morgan was not just because he was a supporter. Back in the 60s and 70s Alex Morgan used to sing before each game. At half time the Metropolitan Police Band would march in formation on the pitch playing and the leader would toss this five foot mace a full 360 degrees in the air and catch it as they marched. When he dropped it the band just carried on marching right over him. That always got a big cheer. They used to have peanut sellers in the ground who would walk through the terracing, around the pitch and through the rows of seats selling bags of Percy Dalton's Monkey Nuts. My Dad would always buy a couple of bags and the floor around my seat was always covered in peanut shells by the end of the match. The dressing room backed on to Avenell Road where the East Stand facade still stands. When Ian Wright broke Cliff Bastin's Arsenal goal scoring record Wrighty opened the window to take the acclaim of the crowd and threw out his shorts, his socks, his boots and then stuck his bare arse through the window. Not the first player to bare his arse to the crowd. Sammy Nelson was having a bit of a mare against Coventry in 1979 and was getting a bit of stick from the crowd. He then scored an absolute screamer and promptly ran to the North Bank and lowered his shorts. He nearly missed the F.A. Cup final as a result of this but Arsenal used photographs of the happy smiling faces in the crowd to show it was a light hearted gesture. Of course there were happy smiling faces, we'd just scored.

Ian….. my first match at Highbury was Boxing Day 1968, I was 8 years old. 62300 crowd, we (me, my Father and my Uncle) sat in the East Upper. Arsenal 3 - 0 Manchester United. Got to see Charlton, Stiles, Best and Law, as well as an up and coming Arsenal team, including Bob Wilson and George Armstrong. That was the day I became a Gooner, and fell in love with Highbury and Arsenal. Ended up with a season ticket in the Upper West, and now at The Emirates. Thanks for your insight!

I started going over The Arsenal in 1980. I was ten years old and one of my good pal's at Hampstead 5th Cub Scouts' dad was an Arsenal fan. So he took us to Highbury and ensconced us behind the goal in the North Bank. Opponents that day were European Cup Champions, Nottingham Forest. Goalkeeper Peter Shilton had been in the papers that week for knocking about his missus. So the Arsenal fans in the North Bank was giving him plenty of abuse for being a woman beater. Graham Rix scored the only goal that day and there was some debate about whether the ball had actually crossed the line or had Shilts saved it? The ref and linesman consulted and the goal was given. I was right behind the goal and saw Shilton push Rix's shot onto the post but the ball then went over the line and he scooped it out, giving it. that it hadn't crossed the line. I saw the ball in the goal with my own eyes. Anyways, I was never a fan of England's #1 and my dislike for this goalkeeper was compounded by his rubbish plan of trying to save the West Germany pens in 1990, but now I digress. Highbury was magical, I attended 1980 - 2003 before moving overseas.

As a Wigan fan, we have some history at Highbury, like the League Cup and being the away side for the final game at the stadium. I'll tell you what though, I'm really happy to see that the stadium is effectively still there! Having seen the Upton Park video, it makes you sad to see that all that history just gets demolished... but look at this! It still has a soul, a history of matches gone. I echo your sentiments about Goodison, this is the way forward so that fans can always visit their spiritual home and allow the history to remain. If you're going to move stadiums, this is the classy way to do it!

Touch of class from The Arsenal by keeping it looking and feeling like a stadium. Smashing video, makes all the difference with a passionate and enthusiastic presenter. I never saw a game at Highbury, closest I got was a walk around it in 2005 when I was in London for a Rangers friendly against Fulham. It looked a very hemmed in ground which made it difficult to get a proper perspective on it, certainly compared to Ibrox, but the frontage was nevertheless impressive. It's a pity Arsenal had to leave, but that's modern football for you.

Arsenal did a superb job of the old stadium, turning it into apartments, but managing to keep a lot of the original structure, The pitch is now the communal gardens for everyone who lives there. I think you will find, contrary to your report, that the Emirates was built within budget, and on time. My first game at Highbury was on Tuesday May 7th 1968 which ended 4-3 to The Arsenal and I was hooked. The first competitive game at the Emirates fell on my birthday in 2006, and I managed to get a ticket for the game against Aston Villa, which ended 1-1. I still travel up to games although I no longer live in North London, it is now a 550 mile round trip, but worth it.

@@hybridtaylur2394 Highbury had four corners they could have filled in plus the clock end (south stand) that could have been expanded. They had already renovated it in the late 80s. Personally I do not think they were being truthful when they claimed that they had no choice but to move. I think a lot of people’s ego, greed and a desire to leave a legacy was more the reason. Plus the new stadium was used to attract a better ‘’class‘ of supporter. Unforgivable in my opinion.

@@gooner73clark88 Filling in the corners would have destroyed the aesthetics of the two listed stands and would only have added seats with severely obstructed views anyway.. Been to Highbury a few times. The first time I went I was in London for Bob Wilson goalkeeper school in the early 90s, Bob was kind enough to get my brother and myself tickets to a pre season game. Great Man and a Great Club.

It is good that the Club kept the site at Highbury, there are many memories tied up with that ground, it had a soul that perhaps the Emirates doesn't have

I recall the stadium project coming in under budget and it being compared very favourably to the fiasco with the new Wembley. There was an issue with selling the properties around the ground and at Highbury, due to the timing of the economic slowdown in the late 00s. Other than that small point, great video! Your commentary is brilliant and I came here after watching your video about Upton park

The redevelopment of the Highbury site is such a contrast from West Ham. I used to live in north London and often went to watch Arsenal. The local tube station is named after the club. I remember peanuts being sold in the ground. Very impressed with the development of the old stands. Prior to the stadium being modernised people used to climb on the roof of some flats behind the Clock End and watch the game for free.

It's so sad the city authorities don't think of football stadiums as heritage sites, which in fact they are. A place like Highbury is a national treasure and should be preserved somehow. I understand that it would be senseless to maintain the whole building but at least one stand and a pitch for junior groups to train. It's disheartening to see such places virtually disappear - like Upton Park. Great channel!

You mentioned Ashburton Grove at one point in this interesting video. What a lot of folks may not know is that before it became Arsenal's new stadium, it used to be a waste transfer centre for the local council. So the council's bin lorries would arrive there at the end of their rounds & empty out so that the waste could be taken away to landfill sites by other trucks. The poor people working in the office on that site couldn't open their windows in the summer due to the awful pong !! 😱😱

Watching this video, you realize that Highbury stadium was surrounded by row upon row of houses. Therefore, increasing capacity, in a residential area like this, would have been very limited. Frankly, they had to leave. However, I agree that the Emirates Stadium was poorly designed in terms of atmosphere.

I was a season ticket holder in the East stand upper, opposite the 6yd box at the North Bank End. I was privileged to see many games there, and saw the last game there against Wigan. My daughter Hannah and I stayed until we were asked to leave, watching the players loitering around on the pitch to take all that history in. Amazing days. Never forgotten.

Nice Video! I attended my first Arsenal match Vs Stoke City in 1980. I went to have a season ticket in 94/95 and saw some magical moments there. I was gutted when they left Highbury. There is Ray Kennedy video called Ray of Light when they held his Testimonial there in 1991 and it shows the East Stand and Marble Halls. I went to The Emirates a couple of times, but I no longer live in England. I don’t miss London, but I miss Highbury.

Favourite memory of highbury as an away fan was arsenal's final home game of the 1989 season when we won to send the redshite scousers back top of the league after they had thumped wimbledon away 4-1.Arsenal then had to go win at analfield by 2 clear goals to win the title on goal difference .A great volley that day over the head of john lukic by dean saunders to go 1 nil up and then in the 2nd half seeing saunders turn tony adams inside out 3 times in the box to be upended and get a penalty which he scored to go 2 nil up.Alan smith scored to get one back with a few mins to go with a header back just inside the near post from a corner but we held on to win.Me and my mate that were not the greatest of liverpool lovers shall we say actually wanted arsenal to get an equaliser but it never materialised. On our way home we had our usual pub stop at jn 9 of m1 wagon and horses and when we got to about jn 14 or 15 the liverpool team bus was passing and player manager dogleash, staunton, craig johnston, ugly beardsley etc were all applauding us as the bus pulled along side ours. The rest of our fans clapped back but me and my mate were giving em the 2 finger salute and international w*nkers signs. We didnt feel so bad for beating arsenal when michael thomas scored the 2nd and goal to win 2 nil 4 days later. But within 2 years with a stroke of a pen he went from hero to zero when he signed for them.Happy days of when football was a fairly level playing field and not a gulf of wealth between those at the top 6 and bottom half of englands top division.

Great story. But just a couple of corrections. The day Derby beat Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool won 2-1 at Wimbledon, Arsenals last home game was a 2-2 draw with Wimbledon.Liverpool then won 5-1 against West Ham to set up the famous finale to the season 13 days after the Derby game. Love to hear old stories like this though.we all have great memories of those times no matter how good or bad the results were for our teams. There was always something special about going to an away game no matter where it was.Made you feel like REAL fan.

@@gavst79 yes corrected and rightly so.I had to have a strong recollection by looking at the final fixtures.I assumed it was arsenals last home game as we just had one fixture to complete which was everton away which was a monday night after the saturdays game at highbury due to the fa cup final date being the week after on saturday. That lovely lot the wrong side of stanley park had still got an extra fixture to play that i think should have been played back in april but due to hillsborough disaster the facup abandoned game v forest was rescheduled for the saturday they should have played west ham and the fa cup final was for the first time ever completed before the domestic league season had ended as the L*******L v arsenal game was the 26th on a friday.

I first went to Highbury during the first season of the Premier League when the mural was up during the North Bank redevelopment. The East Stand is still my favourite stand i have sat and watched football anywhere. I was also fortunate to go on a stadium tour in last season of Highbury, the tunnel area was small and where Wenger and subs would sit. The changing room was ahead of its time with underfloor heating no less. Nice video.

I used to go to each home game at Highbury, in the away end, and even tried to get a season ticket for the away end in 90’s. Great atmosphere and home support always (even though they shouted ‘handball’’, quite a lot. Away end was always full of Liverpool, Man Utd exiles (Man City did not exist)….we did not really like Arsenal….but they had a great team. One time when they played Liverpool, the queue for the away end (no tickets then just queue and pay) was so big and the game was starting still with hundreds in the queue. We went to the clock end home end, got in, made our way to the fence between home and away and got let through to away fans. Those were the days.
